Beach Happy for GDP187

This week’s Theme Challenge for the Global Design Project asks us to create a beautiful landscape with our inks, stamps, papers or dies. What fun! Beach Happy, one of the stamp sets that will soon be retired from Stampin’ Up!’s 2019 Occasions Catalog, gave me the perfect inspiration for this challenge – and I couldn’t be happier to use it again before it retires. Here’s my card for this week’s challenge:

Beach Happy, Stampin' Up!, Brian King

And here’s the banner for the challenge that inspired my card:GDP187Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Beach Happy. Beach Happy is a wonderful stamp set full of fun layers and elements. Not only can you stamp some of the images (the chair, the umbrella, the bag, the hat) and color them in with another stamp, but the sentiments in this set are ah-mazing. Love them all. Here’s a look at the Beach Happy stamp set:Beach Happy, Stampin' Up!, 148585I love the fonts in this set so very much – in fact I pulled this “Thanks” into a card I made a couple of weeks ago – you can see that card here. For today’s project, I was super-excited to ink up this gorgeous tree and give it a silhouette on this beautiful beachfront. Retiring ListBeach Happy is one of the items that will retire on June 2 (or when supplies run out). Stamp sets are guaranteed through May 24, but other items are gone when they are gone. • Easy Backdrop. I really wanted to create a beautiful backdrop for my lovely palm tree, so I Googled “beach sunset” to find colors I’d want to use. I loved the yellows and oranges of the sunset photos I found but also loved the touches of purples. As such, I reached for So Saffron, Grapefruit Grove and Highland Heather – I was light on the Highland Heather because I didn’t want it to come across as gray.  Use a Sponge Brayer to apply light layers of ink for a beautiful backdrop, Stampin' Up!, Brian KingUsing my sponge brayer, I rolled the three colors across Thick Whisper White cardstock before punching my oval with the Layering Ovals Dies and then stamping my tree. Here’s a closer look: Beach Happy, Stampin' Up!, Brian KingI cropped a piece of black cardstock with the edge of my oval die, allowing a diagonal slant to the beach. I added the cropped piece to the base of the oval to ground the tree a bit.
  • Beautiful Sunset. I loved the colors in the “beach sunset” photos I found so much that I pulled them right into my card. I chose light colors of each of the shades so that my black tree would really pop against the backdrop. If you like this combination of So Saffron, Grapefruit Grove and Highland Heather, please save this:Stampin' Up! Color Inspiration - So Saffron, Grapefruit Grove, Highland Heather

Your color choices are dreamy and tropical . Pretty card !

    • Thanks so much, Sonny! I think it’s a great set – probably hasn’t been used much because we’ve had unseasonably cold weather since it was released. I bet we’ll see more of it over the next month. 🙂

  2. Love, love, love the brayered background. Beautiful! (Always fun to use the brayers, isn’t it? )

  3. Absolutely gorgeous background and will be fabulous with may of the new stamp sets and dies.

  6. Brian- Great card & I love the background you created. I’m so glad I got this stamp set & anyone who loves the beaches, even if it isn’t tropical, will totally love this set. We have friends who get away from the STL summer heat & go to the Michigan lakes & this set is perfect for them. You’ve given me a new inspiration on how to use with vacay scrapbooks too. Thanks!

    • Thanks so much for your comments, Marilyn! Lakes or beaches – this set gives a feeling that you and your friends will love. So glad you like what I made with it. ♥

  7. Honestly Brian – Just looking at this card was enough to make me feel relaxed. Your color choices for it are amazing as always. I think I’ll grab myself a book and get into “beach” mode and hope we can get above 45 today. LOL

  8. You create a beautiful landscape with a tool that I rarely ever use. Going to try this technique this week. Thanks for pushing me out of my comfort zone.

  11. Such a pretty card. I feel a little relaxed after seeing it. Pretty colors as well. Received the wonderful swap card today – looking forward to seeing them all! Thanks again for hosting it.

    • Thanks so much, Chris! The colors are so soothing – but I think that’s because they remind us of the sunset. So glad you like it. I’m excited to share the swap cards, too!

  12. Brian this card will make anyone relax, so inviting. What a terrific job on the background. ????

  13. Can you think of a way that I can put myself on that beach? I love your card Brian, I want to live in it.

  14. Beautiful sponged sky…..and the purple is fabulous with it!

Brian…you used the brayer with your regular ink pads? This looks wonderful. I don’t have a brayer but will have to experiment using a sponge.

    • That’s right – I just rolled the sponge brayer into my ink pads and onto the paper. Depending on the ink color, you may want to roll it one or two times on scrap paper to lighten the intensity of the ink. Sponges should work, but the brayer is so much easier (and I’m a fan of easy). 🙂

  16. Spectacular! I’d love to be there right this minute.

Not sure how I missed this when you posted it originally, but so glad it came up in my Pinterest feed. Love it so, so much!! Thanks for explaining how to make such a beautiful background!
