For this week’s CAS(E) This Sketch challenge, Chrissy Larson has given us a fun design that’s sure to get your creative juices going. It sure had me playing with different shapes and colors to meet the layout design. After several iterations, I came up with a combination that makes me happy – I hope you like it, too. Here’s my card for this week’s challenge:

Beauty Abounds, Butterfly Gala, Itty Bitty Greetings, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, retirement card

And here’s the banner for Chrissy’s sketch that inspired my card (can you see each of these elements in my card?):

This week’s GDP challenge has me playing with bees, birds and butterflies, so I’m sharing this project there, too! Here’s the banner for this week’s theme challenge that inspired my card:

GDP191Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Two Beautiful Butterfly Bundles. My card features images from two butterfly-themed bundles that were introduced in Stampin’ Up!’s 2019 Occasions Catalog. The stamps, dies and punch from these bundles is carrying forward into Stampin’ Up!’s 2019 Annual Catalog, but the 10% savings when you buy the bundle will go away on June 3. If you want either of these bundles, get them now. While I didn’t showcase any butterflies from Beauty Abounds on my card, I used the images to create a beautiful backdrop for my butterfly. Here’s a look at the Beauty Abounds Bundle: Beauty Abounds Bundle, Stampin' Up! 150617I stamped the butterfly on this card with the Butterfly Gala stamp set and punched it out with the Butterfly Duet punch. • Making the Butterfly Pop. The Melon Mambo butterfly really pops against this soft backdrop, don’t you think? Even though Pineapple Punch is a bright, cheery color, I framed the card with Soft Sea Foam and Melon Mambo to ensure that the butterfly is the focus of the card. The thick base of Melon Mambo pulls that butterfly out even further.Beauty Abounds, Butterfly Gala, Itty Bitty Greetings, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, retirement cardI stamped the bokeh dots with Pineapple Punch ink (at an angle to meet the elements of the sketch) and stamped the floral image with Tuxedo Black Memento ink. I colored the leaves and flowers with Stampin’ Blends (Soft Sea Foam and Pineapple Punch) and layered a small strip of Soft Sea Foam cardstock over the stamped image, lining up the stamped element.
  • An Unlikely Trio. Pineapple Punch and Melon Mambo are bold, bright colors that bring joy to any project. While I also love Soft Sea Foam (for different reasons), I didn’t initially think I could put these three colors together. They worked for me, though – I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out. 1. Everything about this Card design is perfection! The colors are exquisite and you have created a really crisp, fresh design with this stamp set. I love it! Well done you!

  2. Love how you used the sketch to create an artful and eclectic design!

  3. Oh what a beautiful and colorful card my friend, always count on you for inspiration,
    Tfs , hugs Frenchie ♥️

  4. Awesome use of some creative thinking and fabulous colors went into creating this pretty card. Nicely done Brian.

  5. Linda Callahan

Tricky sketch for sure but you tamed it beautifully! Love your sweet design and fresh colors!

    • Thanks, Linda! I thought of you when I saw this sketch because I think it’s perfect for library books (but, alas, I had no book stamps). Glad you like it! ♥

  6. Perfect for this sketch and love your layers! Great retirement card!

  7. Retire, not you Brian. You have enough energy for the both of us 😄.
Excellent colors to brighten anyone’s day!

  8. What an amazingly beautiful card you have created for us today Brian. I’m so glad I purchased both those butterfly sets. I think I would have had a really hard time converting the sketch into an actual card. That was a tough one for sure. I think the unmentioned element that brought everything to the forefront was your use of black card stock in the layering. It seems to make everything stand out. I absolutely love it.

    • Thanks so much, Grace! I really had fun with these elements, trying to get them to give me what I wanted. I’m so glad you like the black borders – I often reach for white or black to frame a panel. Glad you see how much black transformed this project. ♥

  9. Love your eclectic take on the difficult sketch. I’m excited about seeing what others did with the sketch. Your card is very pretty. I agree with Grace and you that the black layers add something no other color could. Enjoy your day!

    • Thanks so much, Hilda! I’m so glad you like what I did with the sketch – and yes, it was a doozie. Thanks for always leaving such kind comments. ♥

  10. Absolutely beautiful! You are one of my VERY favorite designers! I love your style and color choices ALWAYS!

  11. Beautiful project, Brian. I was thinking about getting those sets and now I definitely want them! Great colors too.

    • Thanks so much, Nancy! I’m so glad you like the project. Only one more day to buy these bundles (while the stamps and dies/punch carry into the new catalog, the bundled savings by buying both goes away on June 3. ♥
