Be Inspired: CASE the Catalog

It’s time for another Be Inspired Design Team Blog Hop – what fun! The Be Inspired Design Team is a group of Stampin’ Up! demonstrators from all over the world who are excited to share our themed projects with you. I’m so honored to be a part of this group of talented stampers!

For today’s Be Inspired Blog Hop, we are sharing fun ideas that are CASE’d from a Stampin’ Up! catalog. When we CASE (Copy and Share Everything or Copy and Selectively Edit), we find inspiration in a project – theme, color combinations, layout, products used – and create our own project by making changes to make it our own. If you aren’t starting the hop here, then you probably just popped over from the amazing project shared by my talented friend Manuela Geiswinkler.

Here’s my catalog-inspired card for this Be Inspired Blog Hop:

A Wish for Everything, Monster Bash Designer Series Paper, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, Halloween card I was fascinated by the candy corn coloring on the tag at the bottom of page 56 in the Holiday Catalog. The technique was also showcased by Stampin’ Up! during our Greek Isles Incentive Trip – I filed it away as a fun sponging technique but managed to forget al about it until I sat down to find a project to CASE. Here’s the project I love:

  • Spooky Halloween. While the sponged candy corn colors are the centerpiece of this fun Halloween card, the Monster Bash Designer Series Paper is an amazing, fun support on this card. The layer of spooky characters and the layer of spider webs are the front and back of one sheet in the Monster Bash Designer Series Paper. Both are such fun! Here’s a look at the colors and patterns in the Monster Bash Designer SeriMonster Bash Designer Series Paper, Stampin' Up! 2019 Holiday Catalog, 150447The super-fun sentiment (“Wishing you a trick-or-treating, candy-eating, frightful-delightful time!”) is from the A Wish for Everything stamp set (part of the super-versatile bundle). You will use this stamp set and coordinating dies all year long. Here’s a look at the A Wish for Everything Bundle:A Wish for Everything Bundle, Stampin' Up! 151111
  • Candy Corn Sponging. As I mentioned above, I was inspired by the inked candy corn pattern included on a project in the Holiday Catalog. Rather than run my sponge brayer side-to-side (like I would if I were creating an ombré effect or building a sunset), I ran the brayer up and down to control the amount of ink in each “section” of my Whisper White cardstock. The sponge brayer was great fun! Sponge Brayers, Stampin' Up! 141714I started with Pineapple Punch (the lightest of the two colors) and then added a little Pumpkin Pie below that, allowing the orange to blend into the yellow. I added a skull and crossbones from the Monster Bash Enamel Shapes for a little added fun. • Cheery Halloween Colors. There’s comfort in traditional colors during Holidays – we expect pastels for Easter, red-and-green for Christmas and black-and-orange for Halloween. It’s fun, though, to add-in new colors with the expected ones. Pineapple Punch isn’t a color you typically associate with Halloween, but it can be a great moon or help you build a fun candy corn. 1. Thank you, Brian, for sharing the “candy corn” technique! Candy corn is such a fun addition to the other scary Halloween ??‍♀️? ? images!

    • Candy corns are definitely the sweet side of Halloween. I’m not a fan of scary or gory (even though I adore these characters). So happy to share this fun technique.

  2. Yes, as Suzie said (above) Candy Corn is the traditional candy for Halloween so your tag is too too cute !! Love the sentiment too !
I am going to try your brayer technique …looks like fun !

    • It really is fun, Sonny! I decided to “give it a try” and ended up using the test run, so that’s a plus. 🙂 I’m no fan of candy corns, but I love the look of this.

  3. Seriously FUN technique my friend. Thanks for sharing!

  4. Wow, I somehow missed that in the catalog but it is adorable as is your card! So clever!

  5. Love the color combo Brian! Great card!

  6. I love your ombré effects! Thank you for sharing the “how to”. That and the combination of Monster Bash papers you chose make a frightfully good card!

  7. I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of the Monster Bash DSP which is coming in my order that just got shipped. Your card is fabulous and, of course, your brayer technique worked out perfectly. AND let’s not forget the great color combination. All in all you earned an AAA+++ with this one Brian.

  8. I actually thought YOUR card was the original until I read underneath!! LOVE the fun papers you used for layering and the Candy Corn blending is so clever. GREAT CASE!!!

  9. Oooh I love that you CASE’d an element of a catalogue sample to create an awesome card rather than the whole thing. We don’t celebrate Halloween here in Australia but seeing so many fab projects created with this suite has me wishing we did

    • Thanks, Tanya. Halloween is mostly for children and young at heart here. I like the lighter, creative side of Halloween. Maybe you could lead Australia into Halloween? 🙂

  10. I love this fun card, Brian. Great job on casing the catalog. I checked out all your other team blogs, but time ran short today and I didn’t have time to comment on each. What a creative group. Hope you’ve had a great day!

  11. This card is awesome! Love the ombre coloring and layout!
