Kick Up Your Heals with Darling Donkeys

I love animals, but I’m not immediately drawn to stamp sets that feature animals – pandas, penguins, frogs, goats and zebras are really cute, but I have to warm myself up to them before I’m ready to create projects with them. I also love nature, but I prefer to enjoy it from an air conditioned room with a really big window. That’s just me. All that said, I created a super-fun card with lots of donkeys an a birthday theme that I’m excited to share with you today. Here’s my card:

Darling Donkeys, Zany Zebras, Stampin Up!, Brian King

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Darling Donkeys. Darling Donkeys is one of the stamp sets you can earn in January and February when you spend $50. The donkeys in the set are certainly darling and perfect for anyone who loves these hee-hawing animals. There are four small sentiments in the set a three donkeys: one is resting, one is presenting a flower and one is kicking up its heels. Here’s a look at this Darling Donkeys Sale-a-Bration stamp set: Darling Donkeys, Stampin Up!, 155264They really are adorable, aren’t they? I chose to play with the heel-kicking donkey for the birthday card I made today. “It’s your birthday!” didn’t tie in enough with the donkey, so I reached for “Kick up your heels” from the Zany Zebras stamp set to complete my sentiment: Zany Zebras, Stampin Up! 152536The sentiment (a combination of both of these sets) and the scalloped Blackberry Bliss panel behind it are punched with the Double Oval Punch. Love this thing! Here’s a look: Double Oval Punch, Stampin Up! 154242
  • Subtle Donkeys. Rather that simply focus on one donkey on my card, I chose to stamp the heel-kicking donkey over and over on the 3″ x 4-1/4″ background of Granny Apple Green ombré paper. The subtle donkeys create a fun pattern that doesn’t need to be colored or cut out. Love that! Here’s a closer look: Darling Donkeys, Zany Zebras, Stampin Up!, Brian KingHere’s a fun tip for randomly stamping on a background with one image – start by stamping directly in the middle of the paper and the stamp around that. That helps you to avoid “backing yourself into a corner” in the middle of your card – the image can always hang off the edge of a panel, but you can’t always fit another in the middle. I hope that makes sense.
  • Oh So Ombre. My card combines two patterns from the Oh So Ombre Designer Series Paper (and two of the four colors in the pack). Here’s a look at the Oh So Ombre Designer Series Paper, another Sale-a-Bration product that can be earned with a $50 purchase: Oh So Ombre Designer Series Paper, Stampin Up!, 155225If you are placing an online order today, you’ll notice that the Oh So Ombre Designer Series Paper is not included as an orderable option. From what I can tell, Stampin’ Up! has a shipment of Oh So Ombre paper coming to the warehouse this week. Go ahead and pick something else for now. When the paper is restocked, you can place another order to earn it then. ♥

Today’s project has no connection to the person and legacy we honor today, but … it’s worth a mention. Today we observe Martin Luther King Jr Day in the United States. The day celebrates Dr. King’s birthday and honors Dr. King’s tireless work for civil rights. While he is most known for his platform against racial segregation on public transportation and his fight for racial equality, Dr. King was also an advocate for the poor and worked to end poverty for all people. The Martin Luther King Jr Center is here in Atlanta – if you ever make it to Atlanta, it’s an eye-opening and heart-warming center that you should check out.

Thanks for stopping by today!

  3. Great job stamping those donkeys for a background…fun card!

  4. What a cute card today, Brian. Love the color combo and stamping of the focal point. Enjoy your day!

  5. Just about the HAPPIEST thing I’ve seen so far in 2021. Can you say ADORABLE!

  6. These little donkeys are a riot, love their smiling faces that surely will bring a smile to the recipient’s face.
I love your combination of stamp sets to create this adorable card.
    Thank you for sharing.

  7. That donkey looks like he is having a great time! I could use a good party myself! Cute card!

  8. Darling card, I especially love the color combination!

  9. I was privileged to visit the Martin Luther King center when I was there 2 years ago. Hearing his voice on recordings in the Ebenezer Church brought both joy and sadness. Thank you, Brian, for mentioning him today on your blog. Maybe we can all go out and do some good in our neighborhoods today to honor his legacy.

    • Couldn’t agree with you more, Cindie! His memory inspires so many great community projects in the Atlanta area. Can’t really participate in many of them today…but soon.

  10. Super cute card and I love the zebra set and sayings-pairs nicely with those darling donkeys. I guess I am drawn to the cute animals because my daughter teaches first grade!

  11. Love what you said about loving nature from an air-conditioned room and a large window! I can relate! Friends once laughed at me for saying I’m not a fan of visiting National Parks. They said I didn’t appreciate nature. “I said they are all woods. How many visits can you take to the woods?” I like outdoors when it’s a perfect temperature and I’m sitting on a deck. Same with the beach. Love an ocean view balcony! I also feel the same way about the animal stamp sets, however I do enjoy the frog stamp set. Love what you did with this donkey card. I just may consider getting this set seeing what you did with it!

    • 🙂 Thanks so much, Maryann! I’m from the South – not too many “perfect” days here, so I’ve never adjusted to being outside more than I have to be. I love nothing more than to look out over my back yard at the landscape and animals (we get a lot of wildlife in the yard despite being in the city) from the screened-in porch or picture window. 🙂

  12. Hey Brian! You are super cool. I love your cards, I love your posts and I love your heart. Just wanted you to know.
