Happy Birthday with Baby Pull Toys

A couple of weeks ago, the Be Inspired Team hosted a blog hop with a “Cards for a Child’s Birthday” theme. I struggled and decided to make a card for an older teen. You can see that card here. I’m willing to admit that my project might have been a bit of a cop-out. Today I’ve made the card that likely should have been a part of that challenge. Here’s my birthday card for a much  younger child:

Baby Pull Toys, Stampin Up!, Brian King

This is my second card for this week’s Freshly Made Sketches Challenge. You can see the first project here. Here’s the challenge banner for the challenge that inspired my card:

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Baby Pull Toys. I simply adore the bold images and fun sentiments in the Baby Pull Toys stamp set, new in Stampin’ Up!’s January – June 2021 Mini Catalog. SO adorable! While I initially set out to make a baby card with a train of pull toys, my design turned into trio of cute animals, perfect for a birthday card for a young child. Here’s a look at the Baby Pull Toys stamp set:  Baby Pull Toys, Stampin Up!, 154537The sentiment at the base of the oval is from the Brushed Blooms stamp set, also new in Stampin’ Up!’s January – June 2021 Mini Catalog.
  • Cute Pull Toys to Cute Animals. I stamped each of these three animal pull toys on the denim-patterned pages of the 6″ x 6″ Designer Series Papers in current color families (I used a mix of Brights, Regals and Neutrals). I snipped out each of the three animals, lopping off the pull toy card below each one. That left me with a trio of super-cute animals and no wheels to cut out. 🙂 Baby Pull Toys, Stampin Up!, Brian KingIn the process of snipping, I also snipped off their little tails and the giraffe’s horns. They are still adorable – even if they aren’t anatomically correct. In fact, I bet you didn’t even notice it until I told you, did you? OK, maybe YOU did, but no one else did.
  • Color Combination. I framed each of these sweet animals in a circle or oval in their same color and mounted all of them on a Pacific Point backdrop. While there’s a lot of blue on this card, it’s the trio of gray, yellow and orange that I like so much. They are perfect for a young child but sophisticated enough for a child who’s a little older. If you like this mix of Smoky Slate, Daffodil Delight and Pumpkin Pie as much as I do, I hope you’ll save this for future reference: Stampin Up! Color Inspiration - Smoky Slate, Daffodil Delight, Pumpkin PieThis card could be easily converted to a card for a baby with just a switch out of the bright colors with softer, sweeter colors.

Stamp Sets: Baby Pull Toys, Brushed Blooms  Papers: 6″ x 6″ Designer Series Paper Stacks (Brights, Regals, Neutrals), Pacific Point, Smoky Slate, Daffodil Delight, Pumpkin Pie, Thick Basic White  Inks: Memento Tuxedo Black  Accessories: Stitched Shapes Dies, Classic Label Punch, Paper Snips, Stampin’ Dimensionals, Mini Stampin’ Dimensionals

  1. Those colors and images make me smile. What a delight!

  2. This card is adorable and perfect for a young child. I love your creativity in removing the pull string from the toys to make them stand-alone figures. I learn things from you all the time. Enjoy your Sunday, my friend.

    • Thanks so much, Hilda! I totally thought I’d keep the strings, but they became stand-alone animals as I snipped. That made them more appropriate for an older child. So glad you like it. Thank you, my friend!

  3. Ouch! All that snipping. I think I heard that giraffe crying up here! Seriously, very cute card. This is a kind of card I struggle with so I am happy to have a cute sample.

    • The tails were staying on until I accidentally snipped off one of the giraffe’s ossicones. Once that happened, everything was snipped off. 🙂 Thanks!

  4. NO cop-out on this post my friend. I think any child (this one included) would LOVE receiving your card.

  5. Awesome card in bright colors!

  6. Adorable! I love how you stamped the Baby Pull Toy’s onto DSP then fussy cut them to be mounted onto die cut shapes not to mention then used the same DSP print as the back drop panel. I’m telling you . . . you ARE the King of DSP!

    • Thank you so much, Tonya! I had fun with this patterned paper – I originally wanted to color in the toys, but the papers gave me a great opportunity for a little snipping. Fun! Thanks so much!

  7. Brian the child and parents will love this card, the colors and the animals cut out makes it pop! And no, I didn’t notice the tails. 😀

  8. Using both the circle and oval dies was brilliant! After all, a giraffe would need a taller space. LOL I absolutely love this card Brian. It’s colorful, cheerful and definitely unique. Fantastic job as always.

    • Thanks, Grace! I cropped the oval and circles before realizing the giraffe would fit nicely in a circle. I decided to add the sentiment to the oval to help fill the space (because I also liked the combination of the shapes). Thanks so much! ♥

  9. What a sweet card today Brian! Love how the accent colors jump out off the blue backgrounds!

    • 🙂 Thanks so much, Sharon! I was going to use Pool Party as the backdrop but didn’t have any of the denim paper in Pool Party. I was happy with how the colors popped with Pacific Point. ♥

  10. LOVE the subtle patterned paper for the animals mounted on the same color card stock! Thanks for playing along with us at FMS this week!

  11. Darling card and so well done. Love the colors!

  12. Wow so adorable with a great pop of color!

  13. Brian, you do such an awesome job of mixing colors. Sweet, sweet card!

  14. UGH. Another stamp set I had no interest in UNTIL YOUR CARD!! So clever, so well done and so versatile! Now I just may need to add it to my list in order to CASE this card!! Thank you for the inspiration!
