Candy canes have always been a symbol of the Christmas holidays for me – peppermint sticks, round candies and candy canes transport me to the Holidays. I wouldn’t say I’m a collector of candy canes, but I have candy cane candles, striped pillows and ornaments to decorate the house in December. I remember when I first experienced a spearmint candy cane as a child – yum! They weren’t as “spicy” as the peppermint sticks, but they still featured Christmas-appropriate colors. Today’s project features two spearmint candy canes on with a beautiful background. Here’s my card:
Stampin’ Up!’s July-December 2022 Mini Catalog kicks off with the oh-so-fun Sweetest Christmas Suite of products, a double-bundle suite with traditional images and colors. The stamp set, dies and paper on today’s project are pulled from the suite of products – it was fun to play with these goodies. Here’s a look at the Sweet Candy Canes Bundle, which includes the Sweet Candy Canes cling stamp set and Candy Canes Dies:
The Garden Green panel across the center of my card and the jumbo candy canes are cropped from the Sweetest Christmas Designer Series Paper. There are so many rich patterns and colors in this pack of papers. Here’s a look at the designs in this pack of papers:
If you quickly passed by my card, you might have missed the twist on the background of the card. You might have assumed I simply cropped the candy cane stripes with the background die in the Candy Canes Dies – I did but not in the may you might expect.
I used the large die to cut into a 4″ x 5-1/4″ piece of Pool Party cardstock. When I pealed away the panel, the the cropped out pieces were still in place on my cutting plate. I grabbed a piece of Glad Press ‘n Seal and pressed it over the remaining pieces. I added glue to the other side and then glued them to a piece of Pool Party cardstock for a faux-embossed look. Below are (1) the background die, (2) the cropped panel and (3) the leftover pieces behind Glad Press ‘n Seal:
After the glue dried, I carefully pealed away the Press ‘n Seal. So easy! Here’s a closer look at the background on this card:
I love blues at Christmas – Pool Party is a favorite. It’s easy to remember how amazing Pool Party and Real Red are together, but don’t forget how amazing it is with Garden Green. What a gorgeous combination!

Love the background-very creative!
I love the combo of Pool Party with Garden Green, Brian, for your pretty card. The green layer with white diamonds is just the right size to let the embossed layer stand out. Enjoy your day!
The blue adds a dashing touch!
Since I don’t like peppermint (inhale a deep breath and say “how could that be?”) I
have always gravitated to the spearmint candy canes. Then, to my surprise, they came out with candy stripped sticks in other flavors. Oh Brian – your card today
really brings back lots of good memories beside being totally inspired by it.
Great card…………………………
The background cardstock is FABULOUS……But I’m taken in by the DSP you used. It looks like it has so much texture. Well Done My Friend.
Brian, Thanks for the great tip. I love the look and also using the cut out pieces saves paper waste.
Great use of the large die and a bonus for us with the “how to” for the background. Such a great card! ♥️
