Grateful with Painted Pheasant

I like to try new things. After creating daily projects for more than 10 years, distressed and rustic projects are new to me. I love a clean, crisp designs but I also gasp at beautifully distressed projects I see online. For me, I find it difficult to strike the right balance between “lightly aged” and “found in a puddle behind a pub” – but I’m trying. Here’s a distressed card I made to showcase the Painted Pheasant stamp set:

Painted Pheasant, Stampin Up!, Brian King

I’ve pulled the sentiments from the Painted Pheasant stamp set for several projects I’ve shared with you this year. I was pretty sure I’d use the leaves and grass, but I was not so sure about the pheasant. That ended today when I felt the challenge to color and showcase this sweet bird. Here’s a look at the Painted Pheasant stamp set:

Painted Pheasant, Stampin Up! 159846To create a weathered backdrop for my bird, I cropped a piece of Evening Evergreen with a Deckled Rectangles Die – it gives the panel a torn-edge look (off to a good start, huh?). I then broke down the fibers of the panel with my bone folder and crumpled the edges with a metal nail file. After there were some creases in the paper, I covered the panel with water spots from the Quiet Meadow stamp set (I used that on my Soft Seedlings card earlier this week). I stamped the leaves from the Painted Pheasant stamp set on the Crumb Cake panel with Sahara Sand ink (that I stamped off once before stamping) for a faint look and additional texture.

I used three Stampin’ Write Markers to color my bird. To start, I colored his head with Evening Evergreen and his beak/feet with Cajun Craze and his eye with Soft Suede. I then colored his entire body with Crushed Curry, followed by strategic swipes of Soft Suede and Cajun Craze. After a few huffs of hot air (to re-moisten the ink on the stamp), I stamped the image on Thick Basic White cardstock. I cut out my bird with my paper snips, leaving a tiny white frame around him.

Those colors in the pheasant blend together beautifully, don’t they? They are great Fall colors that look great on this beautiful pheasant. If you like this mix of Crushed Curry, Soft Suede, Cajun Craze and Evening Evergreen as much as I do, I hope you’ll save this for future reference:

  1. This is a great rustic and distressed fall card. Your coloring is awesome. Coloring the stamp before applying it to paper gives a wonderfully rustic look. You achieved your goal with only three layers! Love it! Enjoy your day!

    • ♥ Thanks, Hilda! The bird came out much better than I had dreamed it would. Positioning him on a card was an entirely different story. Glad you like it! ♥

  2. Beautiful how you colored the pheasant!

  3. Oh Brian, you are too funny! This card looks beautifully aged, and you did a fine job coloring the bird.

  4. Beautiful. I have the same issue with distressed designs. Nice job!

Brian, I grew up in South Dakota where pheasant hunting was a Fall event. My dear dad liked to hunt for pheasant. One way was called road-hunting. Dad would drive down a country road and I would sit on the passenger side and look down the rows of corn for a pheasant! That memory was the first thing I thought of when I saw your great card!

    • It’s amazing how we all have such personal memories with images. I don’t know that I’ve ever seen a pheasant in real life. I’ve been down many country roads, but this is also the first I’ve ever heard of road-hunting. ♥ Thanks for sharing, Suzie! ♥

  6. well done, not a pub in sight…;)

  7. I have been eyeballing this set. I think it’s so pretty and rustic. Love the fonts of the sentiments,

  8. I, too, “find it difficult to strike the right balance between “lightly aged” and “found in a puddle behind a pub”.” (Not sure just how that sentence should be punctuated since most of it is lifted from you…) Glad to know I am not alone. I love this pheasant. I love your card. And it doesn’t look like it was ever near a puddle!

  9. 🙂 Thank you so much, Cindy! I had fun with this card, but tried my best to not cross over that line. 🙂

  10. Your coloring of the pheasant is my favorite of the many I have seen. Thanks for sharing your technique!

  11. A very awesome card…love the coloring and antique feel of it!
