UPDATE: This is not my post for January 2, 2014 (although you are likely here from a WordPress email dated January 2) – this post is from June 4, 2012. I’m not certain why that email went out in the first place. Feel free to check out this post, but if you want to see my January 2, 2014 post, please click here. THANKS!
It doesn’t seem like an entire week has gone by since last week’s MOJO Monday sketch challenge! I really enjoy this challenge and never end up with a card that look anything like the card I planned in my head all day long.
I worked with Allie last night on her wedding thank you cards. Allie attended a party of mine last month and wants to incorporate her new-found hobby into her wedding. She bought Circle Circus from me last month and wants to incorporate that set, along with her Pumpkin Pie, Tempting Turquoise and Basic Gray stamp pads, into her design. We played around with it for a while and came up with a simple, elegant design that her wedding attendees will love!
Before Allie came over, I was playing around with ideas for a monochromatic card. Pam is “concepting” her convention swaps, and I’m trying to convince her to make a white-on-white card, so I have a lot of white clippings and embossed pieces sitting around my craft space. Never really got there, but I’m going to come up with something…promise.
I digress. So, here’s the layout for this week’s challenge:
As I thought about this layout all day long (of course I peeped the layout first thing this morning), I dreamed of bright, bold colors. When I got home and started pulling the card together, though, my two projects above merged into one. The end result is a Basic Gray and Whisper White card:
Not exactly the bold and bright colors I envisioned all day long, but I quite like the simplicity of this design. I used a couple of cool techniques to finish this card:
1. The scallop border along the base of the Designer Series Paper panel and the flower box was created using the Adorning Accents Edgelit and my Big Shot. Simply run the paper through the Big Shot with the little metal edgelit, and you have an instant border!
2. The 5/8″ Organza Ribbon only sold in white, but I wanted gray so that I didn’t have white ribbon over white card stock. Here’s how I inked the ribbon (which actually gave the shiny ribbon a silver effect): I snipped a piece of ribbon and taped it to my grid paper. With a sponge dauber, I dabbed gray ink up and down the ribbon. I was careful to “stamp off” the ink so that it didn’t appear too dark. I then let the ribbon dry completely before handling again.
When I assembled the card, I tied a small piece of white ribbon around the gray ribbon I had created.
Go here Mojo Monday to see all the other beautiful designs.

Classy card Brian, very clever how you did the ribbon.
Thanks, Suzie! I appreciate your feedback. I have often times dragged white ribbon through the ink, but the gray looked almost black when I tried that here.
Great idea with the ribbon. Must give it a try.
Thank you, Nancy! I love all the colors of ribbon Stampin’ Up! offers, but I find the white ribbon to be the most versatile. 🙂
great monochromatic card & love the tip on the ribbon!

Thanks, Mary!
Hi Brian! This card is crisp, clean and stylish. I love the way you took this sketch and OWNED it, and made it uniquely your own. You put a fresh spin on it, and your lines are so sharp. What a great project, and I’m so glad I found your blog. Great work. We need more guys in card-making and art sharing. I currently have only one male participant on my challenge blog, and I would so LOVE to make that TWO by having you join along with us. PLEASE do me the honor of stopping by to check us out, and I really hope you will consider playing along.
I would like to personally invite you, Brian. PLEASE play along at Word Art Wednesday. We’re having a double prize challenge this week, and would really enjoy having you play along and share some of your beautiful art with us. Our challenges are small, good chances of winning the ramdom draw. We welcome new faces, and love to see the art you make. Please check us out and play along with us!
Blessings,
Karen L
