Marina Mist and Summer Starfruit…recognize the combination? After last week’s Pals Paper Arts color challenge, which featured this beautiful color mix, I was inspired to make this card. The background is an homage to beaded curtains from the ’70’s – Christmas ornaments transformed into a peaceful curtain of beads:
I started by stamping this small ornament from Ornament Keepsakes in Marina Mist and Summer Starfruit…over and over and over. I cut out each one with the Holiday Ornaments Framelits Dies…over and over and over. I drew four staggered lines with a scored-and-folded piece of card stock and a Summer Starfruit Stampin’ Write marker, laid the cutouts on the card base and created a nice diagonal pattern with the “beads”. I added a simple sentiment (so as to not distract from the background pattern).
Tips, Tricks and Reminders:
- Play with the card size. It’s common to see card projects that feature 4-1/4″x5-1/2″ card bases (believe me, you’ll see lots of them on my site). Try something different! Every once in a while, I’ll surprise you with a 3″x3″ or a 5″x5″. In this case, I’ve designed a card to fit inside a standard business envelope.
- Play with the pieces. As with a lot of projects I’ve shared with you, I cut a lot of pieces and tried a lot of backgrounds before deciding on the look I liked best. Play with all the pieces, stamp them in different colors, lay them out differently on the card front…and take your time. Rarely will you ever end up with the card you set out to make – and most times, you’ll be MORE than happy with the end result.

Nothing less than “stunning” – that’s what this card is!! Your design/layout and color cobo is just beautiful. Love the tip on making cards of different sizes – takes me out of a rut! Never thought of making a size to fit business size envelopes – something so accessible and inexpensive. Thanks Brian!
Thanks, Barb! I often abandon a project, set it aside and come back to it later – that’s the case with this card. I have another “business size card” coming up early next week that I love, too. For the most part I stick with the standard sized card, but it’s fun to play with that every once in a while. Thanks for all you do to keep me feeling very encouraged!
Great card. Lovely layout. Love the color combination. Also, congratulation on your promotion to Supervisor. You inspire me in ways that Pals that have been doing it longer do not. I started as a demonstrator a couple of months before you did. Your cards are beautiful, but it was helpful for me to be reminded that sometimes they take hours of work and dozens of variations. Your blog is great and I have really enjoyed your comments on the pals facebook page. Thanks for helping to keep me focused.
Shannon, Thank you so much for your kind words and encouragement. I am so inspired by the Pals group, so it makes me feel really great to know that I’ve returned some of that support and inspiration. At the end of the day, I love this stuff and can talk about it all the time. I love the Pals, and I hope to meet you sometime soon. Brian
Great way to use a holiday set for a non holiday card!
Thanks you, Suzanne! I’m always trying to find ways to “repurpose” my stamps. 🙂
