My First Video Tutorial

Today is a big day here at stampwithbrian.com! Celebratory banners adorned the front of the building this morning, and Delores brought donuts and orange juice for everyone. FOR EVERYONE!!! To honor this special day, I’m taking everyone out for pizza at lunch, and I may let you leave a couple of hours early.

What’s the big news? I made a video! You heard me right. Since my first blog post, you’ve been asking for a video. You know how the world works. You meet the love of your life, and everyone wants to know when you are going to get married. You get married, and everyone wants to know when you are going to have a baby. You have a baby, and everyone wants to know when you are going to give your baby a little brother or sister. This goes on and on and on. Twelve children later, you are exhausted and decide to stop listening to all those people who keep talking in your ear. It’s the same in the stamping world. You start making some cards, and everyone wants to know when you are going to start a blog. You start a blog, and everyone wants to know when you will make a video. Please tell me what’s next so that I can prepare myself. 🙂

Without further ado, here’s my video tutorial:

Now that you’ve watched the video (and probably emailed all your friends and family to share the wealth of it all), I want to share some photos of the card, including a closeup of the “watercoloring-ish” effect on the flowers:

Thanks,

Brian

  1. Good morning Brian. Easy, lovely and quick…that’s a great card and thanks for the measurements!! See, you were still breathing at the end of the tutorial! lol That wasn’t so hard now, was it?! Colleen T.

    • I wan’t really nervous, Colleen, but I do think I rushed it. I didn’t get to interject as much personality as I would have liked, but I’m already planning my next one! Thanks so much for watching it and for the kind feedback.

      • My only request for the next tutorials is PLEASE keep that acid green everyone raves about to a bare minimum. That stuff “hurts my sensitivities”! There truly is life after green!! 😉

  2. Yahoo! Awesome video! Congratulations it so so nicely done! Beautiful Easel card! I like how you opted to not use dimensionals on the flowers, just flick flick flick and you’ve added dimension to the flower. I could do that all day long! Flick flick flick. Oh, I’m going to pass on the donuts & juice but I’ll be back for the pizza lunch. <3

    • Funny, Patti! I started to add “flick, flick, flick” into the captions but figured it was already crowded enought with other comments. The donuts were amazing – they were all creme-filled and chocolate-glazed. Woo hoo!

  3. *clap clap clap* …..encore encore. Awesome Brian, I hope to see repeat performances, I just love quick easy video tutorials that get right down to business.

    • Thanks, Susan! There will be more. I thoroughly enjoyed this process. Lots of planning and prepping, organizing and scripting. There will definitely be more – because you asked for it.

  4. Oh my goodness!!!!! I knew you will do this some day!! Now we have a voice to pair with that handsome face of yours!! How exciting Brian, I’m so darn happy you decided to do this, it’s fabulous to be able to listen to you share your creativity with us this way. Your voice came on loud and clear, Mr. King, super cool.
One more thing I’m grateful for.

    • What handsome face to you see, Maria?! 🙂 Thanks, Maria! I always appreciate your kind words. I’m so happy to share with wonderful people like y’all. This was a real high.

  5. Oh Brian, beautiful card and the video AMAZING! Very easy to follow and the end results gorgeous. Keep em coming.

  6. Great job. I love the color combo. And, Scorcese has nothing on you, Brian!

  7. So there IS a voice behind the emails and blog!! GREAT JOB BRIAN….it was so easy to follow and I was grabbing paper to write everything down. I always appreciate dimensions too so continue that and you’ll get a star on my stamping bloggers chart…ha ha! Can’t wait to see what you create next.

  8. Absolutely gorgeous Brian. I love the simple watercolouring effect on the flowers. Your video made the watercolouring technique and easel card sound so easy. I am definitely going to try this form of watercolouring. Thanks for sharing.

  9. No one would have known this was your FIRST video tutorial (if you hadn’t told us). It was great!

  10. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrreat job! Loved the card, the video was a special treat! And you rocked it! It was a wonderful demonstration and you gave us all the details we need. Very nice!

  11. Thanks Brian King of all stamp blogs! I love video tutorials and your first one was fabulous, just like you. I love the simplicity of the card and the color combo too. After my donut, I’ll be playing with Rose Red and certainly celery …two of the colors that have been begging to be used in my stamp room. Thanks again for sharing your creativity with all of us!

  12. Love this. I have a whole new confidence in kind of, sort of watercoloring! Hugs, Mary

  13. Great job and i like how you showed the dimensions of everything and the score line examples. You made this tutorial very easy to follow! Looking forward to your next one and let your personality shine! :0)

  14. GREAT VIDEO TUTORIAL, BRIAN! You “nailed” it! Or should I have said “glued” it!
    🙂
Either way, you get an A+ on your first video!
And I agree with the rest of your reviewers/fans that you did a great job with adding the dimensions right into the video as you were demonstrating. I, personally, LOVE watching stamping videos. I think if you follow people’s blogs daily, you are getting to know that person through their writing as well as through their cards/projects. Getting to see and hear that person no matter whether they live in the same city or states or countries away just adds so much more! Thanks, Brian! No pressure ;-), but whenever you are ready, your loyal viewers will be!

  15. Great job Brian! When are you going to sing for us? Kidding!!! Great tutorial and card. I must say that I am tres impressed with the editing. Very fancy! So proud.

  16. Well that was fun!! You did a great job on your first video! I agree with Pam that your editing skills are quite impressive. Through the magic of video, those little florets were snipped with precision! I told my stamping club all about your blog last week and encouraged them all to visit. I hope they have a chance to see this video too!

    Keep em coming!

  17. Good morning, Brian!

I think your video was great, however, the subsequent ones will be even better. The pace, camera angle, editing, instruction was excellent. But I agree that this was a “subdued” Brian and would REALLY like more of your personality to show in the videos. I don’t know if you have ever watched Mike Funke’s video (actually the only one I ever watched was regarding the custom sized envelopes) but his easy going nature really comes through. I am only mentioning this because I think you can knock YOUR videos out of the park. No one comes across like you do!!!!

Hope you are having a great weekend!

    Hugs, Katy

  18. Hi Brian:

Can you tell me what format the video is made in? I wasn’t able to watch the video but if I know the format I can find a download that will allow me to watch it. Would appreciate it if you let me know. Thanks, I love your blog and I too think it would be great to hear the voice behind the great sense of humor.

    • It’s an MP4. Here’s a liink to the tutorial on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=OinmYDAzvMo. Hope that helps. Thanks for your feedback!

      • Thank you, thank you, thank you Brian! I was able to watch the video on the site you sent to me. Now that I know what the format is for your videos, I will contact my friend who is a computer guru and try to find out what I need to download in order to play MP4! By the way, one would never know that was your first video! You sounded very confindent and did a fantastic job of explaining what you were doing. I absolutely love your blog and your sense of humor. Next step is to have you step in front of the camera so we can all meet you “face to face”! LOL

  19. I smiled for 4.41 straight minutes this morning! Well done video, Brian, in all the aspects the others have said! Now that you can relax, your “court” can be kept amused with your verbal antics, too. Thanks!

  20. Brian,
Great video!! You have managed to make it all look so simple – definitely a desired outcome for all of those who produce such instructional videos – yes? I sense a more permanent change coming to Stamp With Brian!! A star is born and I am a fan!! It seems that a video would be a lot easier, considering time it may require to post a bunch of individual pictures and printed instructions. Keeping in time with those rolling, growing snowballs of life – I am forced to remind you of a reply you posted to one of my comments on your blog during August: “If I ever move to videos, then I will definitely keep some photo instructions just for you.” You were hoping I would forget – huh??? I appreciate your photos, here. My intent is NOT (really!!) to make your life miserable (I see you roling your eyes!), but for future projects that may require measuring, scoring and cutting, could you continue to include those (just the measurements and supplies used) in print? Also – (boy I am really on a roll here!) would it be possible to create a sidebar to your blog to organize posts by month or project type? Don’t laugh – but I had to keep hitting the “Previous” link to find the August post I referenced above. Thanks for listending to my blah, blah, blah for today!! I LOVE your blog!!

    • Barb, it was your feedback from earlier this year that prompted me to include all the dimensions in the video. There is a search function at the top of the screen in the blog. Let me know if you want me to write out the instructions – I’ll do that for you. Going forward, I’ll make the post a bit of both. 🙂

      • Oh my goodness Brian – you needn’t write out the instructions for me!! You are so kind to offer- or maybe that was just your sense of humor (?)!! Sometimes I can be a little gullible. Anyway, you have inspired me to start an index card instruction/reference box and I have a special section devoted to “Stamp with Brian” – no kidding!! This way – I will have the title and content of your blog, as well as the date it was posted. Makes using the search feature much easier!

  21. Brian !! You did vary well !!! I love your card ,I yet to make a stand up card , thanks for sharing, if its ok I love to cas it ,if you don’t mine !!! Hop to meet you in Orlando ,
    Hugs frenchie

  22. Very nice job Brian, could tell you were a litle nervous…..lol! My what lovely hands you have, must have just had a “mani” !! Looking forward to the next one, really really enjoy your blog, learn something new from you all the time!!! Keep blogging!!

  23. Hi Brian: I enjoyed your first video and really liked the card that you made. I am looking forward to trying this “water colour” technique and am expectantly waiting for your next video!

  24. YAY! Awesome video Brian! You did a fantastic job…and your card is gorgeous and simple. I love it.! Thanks for all you do….you continue to amaze me and I just enjoy your blog more than you know! Have a great day! 🙂

  25. Woooo, great video, tips and beautiful card! Thanks for sharing.

P.S. I’m sure you will be nominated for an Oscar!

  26. I’ve been following your blog for a few months and love it. Love your tips and you’re talented and funny. I loved your video. Very clear, concise and easy to follow. Looking forward to many more.

  27. Wow, you can make videos for us anytime!!! Fabulous! And now I will start to follow your suggestions for simple shading…you are my newest hero!!! Thank you very much and now we hope you will do this more often…consider us more spoiled than before! Have a great weekend!

  28. Great job-I love videos-it’s so much easier to do yourself-if you actually see it done!!! You are going to go a very long way in the stamp world-plus I know you would be a very fun person to be around! Thanks so much for making the effort to make life easier for us here at home!!

  29. Great job, Brian! I agree with the person above that said no one would ever know this was your first video! The only thing I would add is that it would be nice to have the camera on your face when you “greet” us and at the end as you say “goodbye”. However, I’m thinking you might be doing this by yourself which would make it pretty difficult to be moving the camera around, so……you’re forgiven! 🙂 For some reason, watching videos of projects makes it a little easier for me to follow so keep up the great work!

  30. Hello Brian,
I have followed you for a while, but I am not a big commenter! Your work is really inspiring! Just wanted to let you know you did s great job with the video! I also appreciate that you gave dimensions of things rather than having us watch all the “details”. It made the video informative rather than boring! Nice job sticking to the technique you wanted to focus on! Thanks!!!

  31. Brian … I love you! LOL What a quick and easy way to watercolor! I won’t tell you how I do it …but I will admit that my process is a lot more time consuming! Dare I tell you that as a Demonstrator I have never made an easel card? Guess what I am going to do today? LOL Have a great day …

  32. i wasn’t sure there was still room to post a reply as I had to scroll down a looooong way! Great tutorial and loved the easel display at the end…will definitely try this with a Christmas theme. Thanks, Brian, for posting daily on your blog – creates lots of smiles in the Gulf islands on Canada’s beautiful west coast:)

  33. great video! you have a way with making the intimidating, simple. thank you .

  34. Love your blog! Love your video! : )

  35. Finally – a voice to go with your awesome blog! and what a great voice too! You did a great job with your video and I loved your stamp set, one of my favorites. Thanks for the technique on water coloring-ish, I love the results. Looking forward to more of your videos.

  36. It was good!!!! really really good …one thing I liked was looking at your project from the front ,not over your head ! Loved the colors, loved the simplicity of instructions (which you excel at my friend) and actually makes me think I can do a little subtle watercoloring and not have it look all wrong..I also want to try the easel card…. Oh and when I stopped in and I saw you were dioing a video…I got really excited, then I saw 49 comments and I thought oh well, he has gone the Magic Mike route to get his sales up !!!! Tee Hee….LOVED IT !!!!!!

  37. Hi, Brian,
Nothing new to add. You do have a handsome face, some photogenic hands, a nice voice, and I think you did a great job with this video! I very much liked the pace, the editing, the inclusion of measurements, and the little bit of self-editing with the glue vs adhesive comments. That’s you. I am so glad you decided to delve into video. My two minutes of coffee time with your blog may now stretch to six or seven minutes if it’s a video day! Woo Hoo!!!

  38. Loved the video and the fact that you mentioned the dimensions. I got a chuckle outta watching it.

  39. I enjoy reading your blog and seeing what you have for the day. I briefly read your title this morning before going to work, and I knew I would be taking a closer look tonight. I don’t have anything new to add, so ditto, and ditto, and ditto,….. to all the positive, feel good comments above. Keep the videos coming! 🙂

  40. My first gift of the season! I loved watching your video and look forward to the next, and the next, and the next….

  41. Great video, Brian! And I *love* the card. Very, very pretty! Like Katy seemed to imply, I have a sense that you have a very outgoing, fun-loving personality. I still thought that you did a *great* job on the video. And I really enjoyed your subtitles. I think they injected some subtle humor that made me smile.

  42. Your video was GREAT!!! I look forward to viewing many more from you Brian. Thanks so much for including the dimensions so it makes it easy to duplicate your projects. More videos please….

  43. Congrats on your video debut, Brian! Wonderful job and beautiful card! Looking forward to more videos in the future!

  44. Brian,
Great video tutorial! I didn’t think it felt rushed…I think the card looked great…hope to see many more videos in the future. Thanks Brian.

  46. Great job, Brian! And really nice to hear your voice. Loved the demo, and appreciated the written measurements too. I like this technique!

Looking forward to the next one.

  47. I totally understand your commentary about people always asking when the next step is going to happen. I’m not sure what comes after adding videos to your blog, but I’m sure you will be ready for the challenge. You made watercoloring and making an easel card look so easy! And your video is perfect, informative in a “short and sweet” way. It was GENIUS!

  48. Hi Brian I am waaay over here in Brisbane, Australia and I love it when your new posts pop up :). Your tutorial is the best too….nice card and so easy to follow. Eagerly Looking forward to the next one.

  50. Hello Brian, Thank you for the video. I have a blender pen, and never knew what to do with it.

One question, is the pen tip dipped into water to begin, or does one start with a dry pen?
What about cleaning. Does it need to be dedicated to one color or can it be cleaned and reused?

    • The tip of the blender pen is a bit moist. After you use it, you can just wipe the tip on white paper until a swipe runs clean. The tip will be stained and look like it has ink on it, but it’s fine to reuse on any other color as long as all the ink has been transferred off. Does that make sense?
