Video Tutorial: Painting with Bleach

When you heat emboss an image and then paint it with bleach, the color is removed from the inside of the image, but the embossed lines stay in tact. With several layers of bleaching, you can turn a dark card stock into white, allowing you to actually recolor the inside of the image with a marker or Blender Pen. Today I’m excited to share with you a video tutorial I filmed that showcases painting with bleach. I didn’t completely bleach out the insides of these images, which is what made this card so fun. I hope you enjoy!

And here’s a photo of the card I made:www.stampwithbrian.com - Painting with Bleach

I really love how Crumb Cake looks so much like River Rock after just two applications of bleach. Yipee! It coordinates! Now, I already know the questions I’ll be receiving about this project, so I’ll go ahead and answer now:

1. What are the dimensions of this card? I didn’t see them in the tutorial. When I set out to make this card, I intended to create a standard card base with Early Espresso, come in 1/4″ on each side with the River Rock and then another 1/4″ on each side with the Crumb Cake. Because I can sometimes be a big, clumsy mess, I touched the right side of the Crumb Cake paper with bleach, so I had to trim it off – and then size it up by trimming a little off the top, too. Correspondingly, I had to trim the River Rock a bit, too. As a result, my measurements aren’t really very translatable. Sorry.

2. When will you release the bloopers reel? While my card-making process was sloppy, I did a slam-up job on this tutorial. Not any interesting outtakes that you’d care to watch on this one. I’m getting good, people. 🙂 If you missed my bloopers reel post, check it out here.

3. Where’s Mom? Mom helped me film this tutorial, but we got it all set up so that I can film them when she’s not in Atlanta. I’ll TRY to coerce her into making an appearance when she’s here next, but I’m guessing you’ll just have to write that one off. Mom is an extremely talented woman, but she is not fond of the spotlight. We’ll see…

  2. Good morning! It doesn’t get any better than this I see NO room for improvement you are a Natural! Great job!

  3. Ohh!! Fabulous, just fabulous Brian. The card is amazing, love how the shell you were bleaching changed colors!! From the samples of card stock you bleached, I LOVE THE BLACK ONE!! It could be used for Halloween or a great sunset. The other samples are cool too.
Ok now…..are we going to see the BLOOPER version of this great video?? I hope so because, after the last one, you left all of us hungry for more, more, MORE!!!!!

  4. Fantastic !!! You are a natural….now you are going to have to find some good music for your intro… Thank you for showing the different examples of color change after the application . That helps a lot toward cardstock choice . I kinda like the Early Expresso…. well, now I will have to buy more Blender Pens so I can dabble in disinfecting my cards !!!

  5. Great video. Thank you — I’m going to try this today! oops. don’t have a blender pen. but… think I’ll try a plain ol’ paintbrush to see how that works.

  6. A very quick and easy technique…….I like. Maybe if we all ask real nice ‘Mom’ will make her video debut with you Brian and she won’t be so camera shy. I have no doubt that ‘Mom’ is a very talented lady, she passed that on to you and you prove it everyday.

  7. Great job Brian. Love this technique and how you go the extra mile and even show what the bleach did with other colors of cardstock. You are a pro! Thanks for this post.

  8. Wonderful video, Brian! Great card…I so love techniques! They can make such a difference in a card…always for the better!
    Have a wonderful day!

  9. wow Brian , love it , tfs, going to trying , your just so good !!!
    frenchie,

  10. Flawless performance, Brian! 🙂
I have to admit, I’ve never done the bleach/blender pen technique, but I really should. The effect is very nice! Much better than when bleach comes in contact with brown bath towels … dear husband helping clean the bathroom – yikes! 😉
Have a great day! And happy stamping!

  11. Great job on your video!

  12. Loved the video and the technique. I was afraid to try it before but after watching your video – it’s going to be something I will definitely be experimenting with! TFS – Hugs, Dorothy
