In my professional training, I learned a long time ago that you should always focus on the positive and never understate the presentation of an idea. Never let them see you sweat, and never, never, never begin a presentation with “Ooof! Brace yourself for a really terrible presentation…” There’s really nowhere to go from there, right? That said, sometimes a card (that is born from a really great sketch and a unique combination of colors and a cool use of products) simply never comes together. Sometimes you have to put your pencil down and say, “This is it. This is what I’m going with,” and then figure out a way learn from it. Such is the case with my card for today’s Mojo Monday sketch challenge. Here’s my card:
And here’s the sketch that inspired me:
Tips, Tricks and Reminder:
- Be Different. You know by now that I like to find new ways to use things, right? I started this layout with my World Spectacular Designer Series Paper (I just LOVE the Cherry Cobbler and Calypso Coral panel of tickets). Wasn’t sure how I would use them, though. ALSO, I’ve never really had a use for the small punch on my Ticket Duo Builder punch. That’s when it hit me – why not punch out a bunch of little tickets and use those for the banners on the side? When I couldn’t think of a reason to NOT do it, I started punching. Woo hoo! I was very happy with the way that turned out.
- That’s the Ticket. I purchased this stamp set with my pre-order for the Spring Catalog. I thought it was adorable and could think of 1,000 ways to use it. Unfortunately, I never did. Until now. Replacing the designed bow with a “happy birthday” ticket just felt right to me.
- A Unique Color Combination. With the exception of this panel of tickets, I’ve not seen the color combination of Cherry Cobbler and Calypso Coral. I just love it. It inspired me to make this whole card (essentially) from those colors. They can really be a bit harsh side-by-side, though, so I added white borders to the panels to break them up a bit. I only wish I had circle between 2-1/2″ and 3″ so that I could have matted the two circles Just looks good to do that, but I can live with these unmatted circles.
Stamp Sets: That’s the Ticket Inks: Calypso Coral Papers: Cherry Cobbler, Whisper White, Calypso Coral, World Spectacular Designer Series Paper Accessories: 1/2″ Seam Binding Ribbon, 3/16″ Regal Brads, Stampin’ Dimensionals, Ticket Duo Builder punch, 2-1/2″ Circle punch
Be on the lookout! I will be repurposing this background or elements of this card. Just a warning that you will be seeing it again. 🙂 I am open to suggestions on how to fix it, so please feel free to share your feedback.
Thanks for stopping by my blog today!

What a study in everything on this card !! The colors are stunning in their shock value . What`s so in your face about all of these elements is that it works ! I have three grandsons that have birthdays in July . You have given me a bunch of ideas for their cards !! The DSP is the crowning touch with the hot air balloons ! Tip : If you present this card to someone , I would also include a pair of sun glasses ….Giggle !!
I don’t know what it is, but I said Wow when I saw it. Don’t know if I could have gone with this color combination’ but what else instead of red? Blue? I like this card!
I can’t believe I am doing this. That said….
Ditch the 3rd layer of tickets DSP entirely. Try a Calypso Coral layer, but textured maybe with the “dots” folder, it will accent the cute punched out tickets better. (all I initially saw was tickets, wayyy too many tickets) And switch placement of the circles, as the red on top just vibrates too much and detracts from the balloons, (but my guess is you did that and didn’t like it.) I can’t wait to read other suggestions, as I too, would like to learn from this card.
Happy Tuesday to all!
Oh the bottom layer of the ticket DSP is my favorite part! If you don’t use it here you need to use it on another card, I think everything on the the top layer of the Calypso Coral – 2 circles, tickets, and seam binding needs to go. Don’t know what to tell you to do then, especially since I assume you want to stay with the sketch. Just start over from that point. Your circles may need to be smaller and sad to say you may not get to use your small ticket punch.
I really like your card as is. The only thing I would do (me being a blingy gal) is add a little bling. As always, great job, Brian!
You see Brian…there IS life after green! Proud of you!! 🙂
Seriously amazed that I like this card because the colors ARE so very bold together–very ‘in-your-face’. But in a very neat way. I think the only thing that would be an improvement would BE those elusive white circles to border your two patterned ones. Surely the future will hold some way to remedy this??? 😉 — Terri O
Sorry to say, it’s doesn’t do anything for me. Alot to take in. It reminds me of those pictures ( I don’t know the precise name) that have a hidden object that you’re suppose to find after starring at it until your eyes are crossed-eyed. Really do don’t like leaving a comment as this. Brian, somewhere in that great mind of yours, you will be able to rescue it. 🙂
Oh Brian, so glad I am not the only one that sometimes just can’t seem to pull it all together. I think the red circle needs to bring out the blue in the top circle. Way to many tickets so I agree with Cindie, ditch the DSP. Do like the small tickets on side, but would do a blue under them to bring them more in focus. Loved your video you are so multi talented.
My first thought when I first glanced at it, was wow…Brian really outdid himself! But then I started looking at it and decided it is a different but good Brian card. Next step was to re-read your opening pp…and the rest and though this isn’t my most favorite Brian card, I do like the color combo and the idea behind your creation. Bravo, Brian!!!!!!!
I really like this card with the fab idea of the tickets and balloons!!! I’m just thinking that I would add more color from the balloons such as more blue and possibly yellow. Maybe layer those colors with the circles. Or, just white under the circles. But, I think bringing out the blue or yellow somewhere else on the card would help. It’s just a thought. Am new to your blog and love all your ideas and thought process. So helpful…thank you!
I think there are too many tickets, and I would also pull in more blue, but it is nice to know you struggle as well and some of us are not alone!
I love this. That’s all.
