While many people are experiencing the unbearable heat or uncontrollable rain, many stampers have escaped it all by jumping right into gorgeous Christmas cards and projects. All the while, I’ve been wrapped up in the beautifully warm colors and patterns of Autumn. Today’s color challenge with The Paper Players allows me to further dive into my Fall inks and papers. It also allows me to give you a sneak peek at a most gorgeous stamp set from the 2013 Holiday Catalog. For this week’s color challenge, Nance Leedy selected three colors that are new to Stampin’ Up!’s family of colors (one new In Color and two former In Colors that are now permanents in the color families): Baked Brown Sugar, Bermuda Bay and Crushed Curry. Here’s my card:
And here’s the color challenge badge from The Paper Players:
Tips, Tricks and Reminders:
- Distressed wood grain pattern. I really love the distressed look of the wood panel behind the turkey in this stamp design (the whole stamp set has a similar feel). I didn’t want the pattern to go unnoticed on the rest of the card, so I created the background with Core’dinations cardstock and the Stripes Textured Impressions Embossing Folder. While the panel is still clean and crisp, it continues the distressed look started by the stamp.
- Whisper White. When working with browns and yellows, the obvious choice for a base paper is Very Vanilla. To really make the colors and images pop on this card, I went against my instincts and selected Whisper White as the base. I wasn’t sure I would like it, but it’s a small risk (there’s almost always time and product for a re-do), and I’m glad I took it.
- Use of Bermuda Bay. Bermuda Bay seems like it would “throw you off” color in this three-color combination. The regal yellow and warm brown seem to melt together like curry in a pot of hot, bubbly sugar (OK, that’s not really a good example), but the vibrant blue seems like it would really not “go” with the other two colors. That’s EXACTLY what makes this color challenge so fun (and challenging). I used Bermuda Bay as an accent on this card – circling the turkey, thinly bordering the distressed background and popping with the “gratitude” sentiment. While it’s just an accent, the bright and bold color really adds a special detail to this card that I probably would have never added were it not for this challenge. I like it!

One more thing – the Thankful Tablescape Simply Created Kit arrived in my pre-order last week. Instead of preparing for Convention, I opened it up and investigated. I can’t wait for you to see this kit – it is absolutely stunning. You will definitely be buying this kit for your Thanksgiving table.
Striking and bold!! I am ready for Fall with this card Brian!! Your take on this challenge works warmly & beautifully!!
This is a color combo that I would not have thought of for a “turkey” card . Actually it is pleasing and new to the eyes . I like the Chevron ribbon with this theme because it looks like it belongs there . So glad I have some …. kinda like that turkey too . Can`t wait to get that new catty !
From beautiful Las Vegas at 4:16am cause I’m still on East Coast Time, I love this color pallet for Fall! So love this new shape Framelits label & distressed stamp set! Beautiful! At 106 forecasted I think I may make a Fall card & try to cool down!
I love this new set, too, Brian, and using the challenge colors gives it a nice fresh look apart from the regular fall colors! Simple yet effective! Love it! Glad you played with us this week!
I love this Fall color combination and I also never would have thought of adding a blue color to a Thanksgiving card but it works beautifully!! It’s subtle yet noticeable. I’m anxious to get that Holiday catalog, I want to see what new stamp sets replaced the beautiful ones they retired.
oh no is it that time all ready ????? wow pretty Brian !!
hugs frenchie,
Great card. This makes me want to buy ALL the products you used. Great use of texture and colors. I have been eyeing that stamp set…now I m sold! You must be on the SU sales payroll!!! They owe YOU extra commissions!! ;))
Adorable! And now we are in the final countdown to Convention! Whoohoo and can’t wait to meet you! There should be a Brian’s Blog Readers tent so we can put faces to the names……
Did you ever consider working for a catalog company Brian? LOL Your delicious descriptions of product make me think “I have got to have that”!. I’m sure the people at L.L. Bean would love to have your write descriptions of their merchandise! Beautiful color combo that I never, ever would have considered until today.
Beautiful card. Love you descriptions also. With writings like this you should give up accounting and write a book. Awesome. You are extremely talented.
Wow, love the card, love that turkey. I’ll have to add him to my ever growing list! As always, Brian, great job. Your blog is high on my list of favorites. I always look forward to checking in with you every morning. Just like my morning cup of coffee I don’t think I could do without my daily visit with Brian! Your wit, way with words, and sharing of your talent are a bright spot in every day.
Your card makes me long for cool autumn weather instead of this horrid, torrid heat we have now. I can’t wait to get my holiday catalog! Have a safe trip to and from Convention and try to stay out of big trouble, especially with Justin K! Nancy B
Wow, that color combo just draws me right in. Love this card. Three things I especially love: chevron ribbon, colors, and layered deco labels.
Wonderful….I love how you added the Bermuda Bay – it really pops! And I so agree that the WW is the better choice for the Baked Brown Sugar… I too love the distressed look of the stamps. Great card….can’t wait to make my first order from the new Caty….after Conventon!
Fabulous Brian! Love the textures and the “distresed-look” to your card! Thank you so much for joining us this week at the Paper Players! 🙂 Hope you are having a blast at Convention!
