Hello, MOJO

As soon as I saw this week’s MOJO Monday sketch, I knew exactly what I was going to do.  I knew I would use Afternoon Picnic Designer Series Paper (because I have never used it in a project), and I was going to feature Wisteria Wonder (because I have never used it).  The front of the card would showcase two big roses from Stippled Blossoms in Wisteria Wonder and several small flowers in Coastal Cabana.  With the left over space, I would add a sentiment (perhaps I’d have room for a long, slender sentiment that would flow across the front of the card like the waves of the ocean).  Oh, I had envisioned the entire thing!  I began cutting out the stamped roses, and that’s when I realized my challenge – the card I had designed so specifically and so beautifully in my brain would have to be 12″ x 12″ to fit all of the components I had dreamed up.  Here’s my Plan B:   Four You, Stippled Blossoms, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, MOJO308

And here’s the MOJO Monday sketch that inspired my card:

The challenge allows the participants to select either a round card or a square card.  I would normally jump up and down at the opportunity to make a square card, but I have two square cards already planned for you later this week, so I went with the circle approach (something I’ve never done before).

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Unusually Shaped Card.    I usually make square and rectangle cards, but it was a nice change of pace to make a scallop circle card.  To turn any framelit shape in to a greeting card, simply score a piece of cardstock and fold it in half.  Then run the paper through the Big Shot allowing the framelit to overlap the fold just a tad (that’s an exact measurement, a tad).  I used the largest framelit from the Circles Collection Framelits to form the outside of this card.
  • Ribbon-wrapped Oval.  When Stampin’ Up! introduced ruffle stretch ribbon in the 2013-2015 In Colors, I thought they were out of their minds.  How would we use stretch ribbon on our card projects?  That was before I realized how easy it was to apply to a card.  I glued this Coastal Cabana ribbon around the outside of the oval and then popped up the sentiment with Stampin’ Dimensionals.  The trick to applying the ribbon to the oval?  Slow and easy – take your time – and if that doesn’t work, try sticking your tongue out on the right side of your mouth.  That helps me concentrate.
  • Envelope Board.  September 1 marks the release of Stampin’ Up!’s Envelope Punch Board.  Woo hoo!  The board allows us to make envelopes in almost any size – making this envelope to fit a 5″ x 5″ circle card was a cinch!  You’re going to want to add this one to your September order – promise.

This card isn’t my typical style.  When I was done with this card, I thought it looked a little “Grandma.”  I shared it with Justin and asked what he thought.  He said it looked a little “fifteen year old girl.”  I don’t know how I managed to create a card that was a perfect balance between Grandma and a teenage girl, but apparently I am THAT good!  🙂  What do you think?

Thanks for stopping by my blog today!

  1. Love the colors and I love love that ribbon . I forget to use my ruffled ribbon and I do love that it`s stretchy (if that`s a word) . I also forget about round cards . I haven`t used that shape this year at all . I guess that Mojo sketch really works . Really cute card and I agree with Justin …I think it`s more teenager type .

  2. I am neither a grandma or a 15 year old girl and I love it. I plan to use your color combination myself. Very striking.

  3. Ah! Luckily you had a Plan B great job! I was just thinking myself how I never pull out my Wisteria Wonder, it’s likely I have an entire un opened package! I agree the new Envelope Punch Board will be a hit, folks don’t miss out!

  4. Oh my gosh — what an amazing plan B!!!

    Gorgeous!

  5. I had to laugh at your 12×12 card because that same kind of thing happened to me the other day. Twice! I haven’t experimented with cards in different sizes, yet, but they won’t be that big when I do!

I agree that your card is kind of 15 year-old girl. My daughter bought herself a comforter set for her bed that had those colors in it when she was 16! Before I read your description, though, I thought of “1950′s,” for some reason. It made me think of the girls with full skirts, bobby socks, saddle shoes, and pony tails. Make it in black, pink, and white with some polka dots and it might make a great invite to a theme party!

    Thank you for sharing!

  6. You really are that good Brian!! I think it’s adorable!

  7. I love this, and would send it to a teenage girl, to my granny, or indeed I’d gladly receive it myself. I think that makes you officially a genius, as you have designed a card that appeals to teenagers, grannies, and 49-year-olds!!!!

  8. Love this card. I do not see G’ma are teen 🙂 I see a beautiful card that is totally feminine and a lady who is so capable of thinking outside the box.more corporate 🙂 At any rate, it’s a beautiful card with boldness, simplicity and elegance, JMHO “)

Super-cute for any age!! I have used this color combo with this DSP (thanks to your Swatchbooks!!) & it is very pretty! The oval with the ribbon around it popped up on the circle card base sets it off very nicely!!! 🙂

  10. It’s a lovely card Brian! I never do shaped cars but I may have to give one a try! Anyone, grandma or teen, would be happy to receive this! 🙂

  11. yes yes you are just that good and more, keep up with all these cards.!! then i dont have to work so hard making mine. have a great day

  12. Nice job, as always! I made my first shaped card the other day (heart). Must be something in the air! Just got my Envelope Board so I too will be cranking out those cute envies!

  13. I always enjoy a good 12×12 myself 🙂 Brian, I also always enjoy a good chuckle with your posts! Your card and color combo are so fresh and pretty!

  14. I really like this card – the different shape is great and I love the color combination. Think I will try one today!

  15. Plan A, B, C, D………………………………whichever plan you end up using is magnificent. My niece has that color pallet in her room, why didn’t I think to use them myself. It totally works. I will also ‘plug’ the new Envelope Punch Board, it is a must have. My niece came to visit and she couldn’t stop making all the different sizes of envelopes. Plus she is 15, she fits the bill for todays card. She will think your card is ‘way cool’ when I show her.

  16. I love the colors. I think wisteria wonder has just enough grey in it to make it a bit difficult to mix with other Stampin up colors. I’m going to put Ww with Cc on my list to work up.

    Thanks Brian

I think it’s a “tad” closer to teen girl than grandma, but either one would be thrilled to receive this beauty! I wondered the same thing about the ribbon when we first got it, but it’s turned into my “go to” favorite. Great card, friend!

  18. O.K. Brian – I thought I had patented the tongue-sticking-out-to-the-right-thing! Evidently someone shared my secret with you! LOL No matter what method you used, tongue or no tongue, the result was fabulous.

  19. Lol, the comments today are almost as funny as your blog!
You really are in the creative zone, Brian and stepping outside the box was a real success, too. Congrats again!

  20. Love it! I don’t comment often; but, this is just a gorgeous card. The colors ROCK. I love that you incorporated the little bit of vanilla. The ribbon are the oval is just fabulous. Love the flower and the pearl bling! Any Lady would love to receive this card. Nicely done!

  21. Plan B worked perfectly. But you Plan A gives me inspiration for a scrapbook page (which I used to do a lot before but now too busy making cards). Working on a round card for this challenge…. but it IS a challenge that I will hopefully conquer. Lovely card and I love the colors.

  22. Oooops….. and I forgot…. YOU are THAT good! 🙂

  23. You definitely are that good! My mother would love this card and she is a great grandma! However, my 8 year old granddaughter would love it too!

  24. I LOVE it! I’m going to do this tomorrow! Can’t wait to try that ribbon!!! You’re just too good!!

  25. the card is ageless, Brian, so pretty and feminine any girl would love it. I will definitely be using the colour combo too, thanks for the inspiration.

  27. First I want to compliment you on your color choices and commend you on your creation of the perfect teen/grandma card…you are a hoot! Great card. And loving how you used the ribbon and single flower…still giggling at your comments!

  28. Well Brian, I have an almost 16 year old girl so your card will fit right in the window of opportunity to send. LOL Love it! Thanks for sharing!

  29. Fabulous!!

  30. I really like Plan B! I’m glad I saw those two colours used together! Love them.
