“So Very Happy” to Share a Sneak Peek

I am back from Houston – I’ve been at Stampin’ Up!’s incredible Leadership Conference since last Wednesday – and I’m super-excited to share a couple of Sneak Peek item with you.  While the Banners Framelit Dies are from the Occasions Catalog (launched Jan 3), the paper is a sneak peek at one of the wonderful Sale-a-Bration products, and the images and sentiment are from a brand new 2014-2015 Annual Catalog stamp set called So Very Happy.  We were all So Very Happy to receive this stamp set this weekend, and I’m So Very Happy to share it with you now.  Here’s my card:

So Very Happy, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, FMS118

With this card, I am also sliding in on the last day of this week’s Freshly Made Sketches sketch.  Jen Mitchell is the host of the challenge, and her sketch is perfectly clean.  Here is Jen’s sketch that inspired my owl card:

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • When coloring just won’t do.  I stamped this owl on Whisper White with Jet Black StazOn – keep reading, keep reading.  With a Blender Pen, I tried my best to color the owl with Summer Starfruit.  Nope.  I tried again with Sahara Sand.  It was difficult for me to get the solid image I wanted with the Blender Pen.  After a couple of attempts, I decided to stamp the image on Sahara Sand and snip it out.  While the Blender Pens and Stampin’ Write Markers are perfect for some images (I used the makers to color in the stripes on the banner in the owl’s hand – er, wing – and am happy with how that turned out), sometimes coloring is not the answer.  Things will be very different when the Stampin’ Up! Blendabilities are released sometime this quarter.  Woo hoo!So Very Happy, Stampin' Up!, Brian King
  • A beautiful mix of colors.  The colors in this Designer Series Paper (Sweet Sorbet from Sale-a-Bration) are a wonderful foundation for other images on the card:   Basic Black, Crisp Cantaloupe, Pistachio Pudding, Pool Party, Sahara Sand, Summer Starfruit and Whisper White.  While I used these exact colors, I notice that Stampin’ Up! has selected black, white, a pink, a green, a blue, a gray and a yellow.  What balance!  And what a great tip for creating our own balanced color combinations.  I used these colors for the owl, the sentiment, the flag and the other paper on the card.
  • An extended banner.  I tend to like practical cards – cards that don’t have oversized bows and trinkets, cards that can be mailed or reasonably placed in an envelope.  Of course that tendency can be challenged, right?  For today’s card, I decided to create a layered banner that extends beyond the base of the card.  What is going on here?!  While I can’t fit this card in a standard-sized envelope, I can make an appropriately sized envelope with my Stampin’ Up! Envelope Punch Board.

*Love* your design, Brian! Very cute!!! I, too, want to see more of the So Very Happy stamp set. You always have the best eye for design details.
