You’re My Hero for The Paper Players

The Paper Players have challenged us to use a star or stars in a Clean and Simple (CAS) project.  I love these CAS challenges because they give me permission to be super-clean.  Thanks, Paper Players.  Nothing complicated here, just a CAS card with a star and a sentiment.  I’m happy with the result:

Here’s the challenge badge for LeAnne Pugliese’s CAS challenge at The Paper Players:

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • From Snowflake to Badge.  The Festive Flurry framelits (still available online) make some beautiful snowflakes, but with just a few snips, the snowflake transforms into a beautiful star that resembles a policeman’s badge.  Here’s a piece of Silver Glimmer Paper, cropped with the smallest Festive Flurry framelit:Festive Flurry Framelits, Stampin' Up!, Brian KingThis is the same cutout with the little humps snipped out of the top left notches of the badge:Festive Flurry Framelits, Stampin' Up!, Brian King
  • Don’t Forget!    I’ve been carrying the idea to make a star badge with a Festive Flurry Framelit since early December, waiting for the right time to use it.  This is as good a time as any, huh?  When I have ideas I want to incorporate into a card and don’t want to forget them, I often times jot the idea down on a scrap piece of paper (resulting in ten or more scraps of ill-sized papers that sit on my desk until I can toss them.  Sometimes, I file the ideas away in my brain, and other times I have to make the card immediately.  I’ve had this snowflake sitting on the edge of my desk since December.  🙂  How do you “file away” your card ideas and thoughts?making a sheriff's badge from a Festive Flurry Framelit, Stampin' Up!, Brian King
  • Triangles, Rectangles, Star.  The triangles in the Kaleidoscope Designer Series Paper repeat the points in the star of the badge.  Lots and lots of points.  The circle around the badge offers a border with no points.  The card base, its borders and the band across the front offer a variety of rectangles.  Then there’s the star.

Tools of the Trade.  My Tools of the Trade workshop was a huge success. I think the attendees had a good time, but I KNOW I had a great time.  Most attendees were local demonstrators, and it was so nice to meet all of them.  I’ll share more on that tomorrow -including pictures.  Woo hoo!

So glad to hear your event was a rousing success!!! I expected nothing less & can hardly wait to see the pictures & details tomorrow!!! I immediately thought of a Sherrif’s badge when I saw your card for today Brian!!! Very cleverly CAS!!! 🙂

  2. Great idea to cut up this snowflake. I keep a binder of photos of cards I would like to CASE. Also filed in the binder are directions for 3-D projects, envelopes, (from before the Envelope Punch Board) different fold cards and boxes. Can’t wait for pics of your workshop. Hope the weather has warmed up for you. 🙂

  3. Oh, Brian, you are SO clever! I love your policeman’s badge…a perfect CAS way to use that star. DH watches TONS of old westerns so this feels right at home! Thanks for playing!

  4. This really is clever, Brian! 🙂 But now I have the song by Bob Marley “I Shot the Sheriff” in my mind – LOL!

  5. Great idea ! I love the “pretend snow flakes” and hate to put them away . I have made flowers out of them but, only a guy would come up with a badge !! You are soooo creative ! Cute card !
I will be here bright and early tomorrow to see your pictures so have the coffee ready !Are you gonna tell us a little about what you covered ?

  6. Great way to use the Snowflake die, really only you could have seen a police badge in a snowflake!! Awesome idea and a perfect rendition to a CAS using stars Paper Players design.
I hope you didn’t get a lot of “fly away” GLITTER when you snipped that glimmer paper, we all know how you are not particularly a fan of IT.

    • The glitter from the glimmer was contained (as best it could be contained). I did use an old pair of snips, though, so as to not contaminate my good pair.

  7. I also knew immediately the badge was the festive flurry framelit. Brilliant! I only wish I could train my brain to be able to see beyond the intended use of the product. That’s why you are our KING.

  8. What a fun use of the snowflake framelit. Love it!!

  9. I am soooo sorry I didn’t make it to the tools class yesterday; I’ve been looking forward to it for weeks. I went out to dinner Saturday night and woke up early Sunday morning with an awful case of food poisoning! So I spent the day in bed and feeling like I wanted to die. I promise, I swear I will come to a class/demonstration soon! Stupid stuff keeps happening. Boooo!!!

  10. Nice 🙂 wish there was still a ‘like’ button on here! Vx

  11. Clever Brian is at it again, turning a snowflake into a police badge. Where do you come up with these ideas?! I love it! Awesome CAS card. Thanks for playing along with the Paper Players!

  12. This is a great card, Brian…..old west mets geometric design. Great use of that fat snowflake! And thanks, Suzie,
for the ear worm, my co workers are gonna love that, LOL.

  13. Wow! Fab way to use the snowflake die! Love this CAS card! You are a clever one…well done!

  14. Brilliant!! I’ll never look at my beloved Festive Flurry framelits the same!

  15. What a darling card. It is great to learn another way to use the Festive Flurry framelits. Your choice of materials surprised me a little. Great job Brian.

  16. If ton’s of information could make me rich…I’d be there. Several 3 rings full of info and sometimes I just make a plain white card front with all the layers (still plain white) with the dimensions and where I got the idea. These are in a file box.
Love the star card. Great idea.

  17. Well of COURSE you made a badge out of a snowflake! I mean…why wouldn’t you? This is why you are such an inspiration to all of us. Awesome card…and how in the world do you figure out that the little triangles in the dsp will mimic the points of a star badge? You mind amazes me…….. you are a brilliant brain, Brian. HA! No really, you are! Thanks for sharing your wonderful mind with us. I think they made a movie about you… 🙂

  18. WOW Brian – I think you were thinking of me when you turned that snowflake into a badge. I have a lot of nephews that are police officers and friends that are State Troopers that will love the birthday cards I will use your idea to make. I wish I had even 10% of your ability to transition a single stamp into such a variety of uses. Brilliant, absolutely brilliant! Thanks so much for sharing your amazing design abilities.

  19. I’ll need to CASE this card for my son Joseph who was born with Down’s Syndrome. He LOVES to watch Andy Griffith DVD’s and play “sheriff” with his uncle. This will be the perfect card for his next birthday. Thanks Brian! : )

    • Dawn, This warms my heart. Thank you so much for sharing that. I love that you can make him happy by making something that’s modeled after something I made – that’s pretty cool to me, and I’m honored.

  20. Love the badge idea! My brain never would have gone there:( I have an Index Card Ring I bought at Office Max that has plastic front and back plus elastic to hold all together that I put card ideas, instructions and pics in.

Your card was AMAZING in it’s simplicity!

  21. Great use of the snowflake. I recognized it for what it was but would never thought to do that.

I have an app on my iPad called Sticky notes. Whenever I come across something that I want to do later I put it on my one sticky note called Tho HS to try. I also try to reference where I saw it and the date, or URL so I can reference if I don’t remember. I usually snap a screen shot with my iPad and store thT in the sticky note or just refer to it being in my camera roll. I also use this app to capture SU items I need/want to purchase.

I’ve been putting videos or other instructions in my ‘reading’ list on my web browser.

And I have a this and that journal that I capture instructions or ideas.

I guess I’m all over the place.

  22. Great card Brian! And it actually makes a lovely Star of David, too. Thank you for sharing!

  23. Take a phone picture, email it to myself, put it in a document with the details and save it in an IDEA file under card, project, page, etc. for whenever needed. Ideaa in a magazine or other hard copy, tear it out if possible, glue it to a 4 X 6 card and deposit it in a file box on my craft table. Did the same thing for school ideas before I retired. Showing my age now. Most ideas now are found digitally and not in hard copy resources!

  24. I think about idas and let the idea bob around in my mind… if i have a great thought i will make a small sketch….if I can i will pull things out to look moreclosely at the idea…then I start working on the idea…if its not working I step away and think about it some more…i normally leave out what i like and look at it in passing …wishing i knew what was next…theirs this idea just learking back their just wating till the right moment….I’m a slow creator …Great card by the way

  25. I like your star. When I first saw it I thought”glitter?”, them thought maybe it was embossed. But reading you instructions, I was wrong both times.
So glad you were all able to enjoy the Tools of the Trade. Taylor I’m sorry you were ill. I’ve had food poisoning and ended up in the hospital over night. Hope you are feeling better.
My ideas are in my computer..I have folders”Stamp with Brian”, “Jaydee”, “LeAnne”, and others where I move the emails. Or I sketch a diagram and put it with sample cards, I have made.
    Thanks for the song!

  26. So cute and clever! Love it!

  27. What a great idea. I had never thought to turn the snowflake into anything else. Love your take on the challenge. So glad you shared this fabulous card with the Paper Players this week
