While I tend to design very clean cards, my projects are not always simple. I can easily get caught up in many layers of cardstock or spend lots of time fine-tuning the smallest details on a card. For the past couple of months, I have been delivering simple cards every Saturday. It’s my way of forcing myself to make a beautiful card from the most basic supplies and to create projects that can easily be reproduced. Today is no exception. My Simple Saturday card also follows this week’s sketch for Freshly Made Sketches. Here’s my card:
And here’s the awesome sketch from the super-talented Narelle Farrugia:
Tips, Tricks and Reminders
- Keeping up with The Browns. I absolutely love the combination of colors in Retro Fresh Designer Series Paper. While Tangerine Tango and Coastal Cabana bring a little spark to the designs in this paper, it’s the marriage of Baked Brown Sugar and So Saffron that really delivers the warmth. It’s that warmth that inspired the other elements of the card.
- A Layered Flower. The base of this flower is a punch of Baked Brown Sugar from the Blossom punch. I then stamped a Flower Shop stamp on Very Vanilla and punched it with the Pansy punch. The addition of a Petite Petals punch from Baked Brown Sugar and a So Saffron button with Linen Thread completes the look.
- Balance. There are three primary elements on this card: the flower, the DSP panel and the sentiment. Because the flower is so heavy (both in size and color), I reduced the size of the panel a bit from the original sketch. The bold stripes weren’t enough to balance everything out, so I added the sentiment in Baked Brown Sugar.
Stamp sets: Flower Shop, A Dozen Thoughts Papers: Baked Brown Sugar, So Saffron, Very Vanilla Retro Fresh Designer Series Paper Inks: Baked Brown Sugar Accessories: Blossom punch, Pansy punch, Petite Petals punch, 3/16″ Corner punch, Subtles Designer Buttons (So Saffron), Linen Thread, Stampin’ Dimensions

First I am head over heels for the Retro Fresh DSP. This card showcases all the yummy colors perfectly and the layered flower is a great accent. Another winner Brian!
Very bold card – the flower and the color combinations are just great!
As I just love your card Brian, I TRULY do, I’d have to make the Petite Petal Punch flower in Tangerine Tango!! But then perhaps it wouldn’t work as well with the So Saffron button! ?? Who knows, but I love your card!! 🙂
Your card made me smile!! So cheery and bright! Love!!
Ah, that brown flower just does it. What a nice card-clean, colorful, focused. TFS, as usual!
Ditto on Angie’s comment! : )
A very lovely and sweet card to brighten this very gray Saturday morning. I love how the lines on the DSP make your eyes focus on that beautiful flower. I never thought of a brown flower before but you just made a gorgeous one. All the layers of it are different and beautiful, the linen thread just completes it to perfection. Have a great weekend.
