Endless Awesomeness for FMS141

When I saw Cindy Hall’s sketch for this week’s Freshly Made Sketches Challenge, I immediately knew how I’d approach this week’s challenge – and I was excited to make it as soon as I could spend some quality time in the Fungeon.  When I finally sat down last night to complete my well-thought-out project, I quickly knew my card wouldn’t be made.  Still, I’m happy with the card I finally made.  Here it is:

Big News, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, FMS141

And here’s Cindy’s sketch for Freshly Made Sketches that inspired my card:

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Reversing the Sketch.  I get it.  This sketch calls for nine squares and rectangles, aligned on a square card front.  My journey to make the card above started with lots and lots of cropped pieces of DSP.  I tried detailed patterns and large, modern patterns.  My table was filled with a ton of scraps (there were a lot, but there were not really a ton of scraps – can you imagine how much paper it would take to snip a ton of scraps?).  In the end, I decided to keep the nine pieces as one solid piece and create the illusion of separation by adding thin strips of Old Olive paper.
  • No End to Your Awesomeness.  I simply love this sentiment – what a great way to celebrate someone’s success.  What a great sentiment to encourage someone’s success.  The sentiment is from Big News, a set that contains several really great sentiments that are equally as large.  I like that the sentiment stands alone here – not too clouded by a bunch of patterns and colors.  Simply stamped on Whisper White, the sentiment stands on its own.
  • Apothecary Accents Framelits.  When I set out to crop this sentiment, I underestimated how big it is.  While I could have cropped it with one of the larger ovals, I was really excited to pair it with this large shape from Apothecary Accents.  I always think of the shape as formal, but it was fun to pair it with this modern, sketched sentiment.

  1. I love your style! This is great, and I love that you have used the new in-colour Blackberry Bliss.

  2. Love your interpretation. Love the “largeness” of the sentiment. Have a great day. 🙂

  3. Oh my gosh, Brian! There should be a prize for this card! I’ve been waiting and wondering if someone would use strips to create the illusion of the separate pieces! I should have known that it would be you that would see that possibility. Great card! Thanks for sharing with us at Freshly Made Sketches!

  4. As soon as I saw your card I exclaimed, “oh Brian!” Only you would have the ingenuity to take a somewhat complex design and simplify it. Your interpretation is a perfect display of your awesomeness.

I noticed this sketch yesterday and am determined to try it today for a birthday card. If I struggle I will resort to your interpretation. ;-).

  5. This is a great card . I like your use of The Apothecary Framelit in a non formal way. I just got that set and love it ,but can`t quite come up with an idea that is not so “fussy”. Love the Old Olive strips. My problem would be getting it straight . A ruler and light pencil lines might be the answer ….will try !

  6. Love your sense of humor! Sometimes I feel like I create a “ton” of scraps too. But the tiny strips of Old Olive add so much to this card, so maybe it was a good thing that you kept creating scraps until you came up with this awesomeness!

  7. You are awesome! Lining up those bits of paper made me crazy! Love how you put the strips on top!

  8. This is yet another fun card you have created! Love the sentiment and I am still loving the Blackberry Bliss ! Thanks for sharing!

  9. Old Olive and Blackberry Bliss … such a lovely combination with just the right amount of Whisper White. I love how you interpreted the sketch by using the Old Olive strips to “do the work” instead! I would have spent a lot of time trying to mat the sentiment instead of feeling perfectly comfortable without it! Great job! 😉

  10. Hi Brian,

Is there no end to your awesomeness? Your blog is the first one I look at everyday. How do you do it day after day with such awesome cards? I love your style as do many, many others.
    Looking forward to tomorrow’s inspiration.

  11. Oh Brian, Brian, Brian – forget the awesomeness, you are AMAZING! If I had one tenth of the design ability your brain has I’d be thrilled. I would NEVER, EVER have thought to use the skinny strips (which by the way I have tons of because I can’t tolerate throwing out any cardstock) to create the sections versus cutting the individual pieces and then trying to get them perfectly aligned. You did good Oh Mighty Master of the “King”dom!

  12. Brian…I love your card today. It’s so simple yet so elegant. Love the color combination too.

  13. Love this design. I sure was struggling with how to put all those small pieces together and cut at the proper sizes. This is much better but how in the world did you even cut such thin strips????????

  14. Love this take on how to make the sketch! Brilliant! Such a fabulous card. Glad to see you this week!

  15. Clever and smart card today. Love the color combinations.

  16. Brilliant color combo…another great card!

  17. Hoooo, I love this card ! It is sooo you ! The colors are great and I really like the little polka dot background paper under the bold white sentiment. Truly awesome ; – )

  18. Perfect Brian !!!!

  19. Awesome take on the sketch, I love how you broke up the pattern with strips of paper, Great card
