Fun Flower for The Paper Players

Nance Leedy is hosting this week’s sketch challenge for The Paper Players.  This sketch is a super-simple sketch that, with a little creativity and ingenuity,  can be turned into almost any style of card for any occasion.  Rather than stray too far from the sketch, I decided to play around with color and find a fun way to showcase a complex piece of Designer Series Paper I had sitting around.  Here’s my project for today:

Bloom for You, A Round Array, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, PP201 And here’s Nance’s sketch that inspired my card:

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Playing with Color.  Bright pink and bright orange look great together when paired correctly.  Here’s my trick for making it work:  either go a little or all-the-way when pairing these two colors.  Anywhere in between can just end in a bad way.  For this card, I went all the way!  Pink is bordered with orange, and orange is bordered with pink.  There are no other colors to distract you from the two.  I think my confidence in the pairing makes it work.  Do you agree?  I know that’s a risky question, so please don’t answer.  🙂
  • Stacking the showpiece.  The flower is stamped with the Bloom For You single stamp and punched with the Fun Flower punch.  Here’s how this centerpiece is stacked (from the outside, working our way in):  Pumpkin Pie cardstock cropped with Circles Collection Framelits, Whisper White cardstock punched with a 2-1/2″ Circle punch, Bloom For You stamped on Whisper White with Pumpkin Pie and punched with the Fun Flower punch, Bloom for You stamped with Strawberry Slush and snipped with paper snips, Pumpkin Pie cardstock punched with a 1″ Circle punch, A Round Array stamped on Whisper White with Strawberry Slush and punched with the 7/8″ Scallop Circle punch.  Whew – that sounds pretty exhausting if you say it in one breath.Bloom for You, A Round Array, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, PP201
  • Pearls.  I know the Blendabilities are not yet available to customers.  You will be SO HAPPY when they are, though – I promise.  I used the Pumpkin Pie Blendabilities pen to color these small pearls before adding them on top of the banner.  The pearls were an afterthought – my white banner needed a little something special, and the colored pearls were the perfect addition.
  • BONUS TIP:  If you look closely at the petals of this flower, you’ll notice that the petals not all the same.  Much like Flower Shop and the coordinating Pansy punch, be very careful and observant when you mount this stamp so that you match up the sticker with the stamp – AND make sure the stamp is mounted to coordinate with the punch (you want to be able to identify the bottom of the image).  Just wanting to save you a little time – I’m nice like that.

Stamp Sets:  Bloom for You, A Round Array  Papers:  Strawberry Slush, Pumpkin Pie, Whisper White, Confetti Celebration Designer Series Paper  Inks:  Strawberry Slush, Pumpkin Pie, Blendabilities (Pumpkin Pie)  Accessories:  2-1/2″ Circle punch, Circles Collection Framelits, Fun Flower punch, 1″ Circle punch, 7/8″ Scallop Circle punch, Hexagon punch (to crop banner tips), Pearls Basic Jewels, Stampin Dimensionals

  1. LOVE IT! What a way to star the week…so fun, bright and cheery….just like YOU…but then again, you are the KING!!! Have a great week my friend!

  2. Great summer color combo Brian! : )

  3. Gorgeous!! Love these colors together! 🙂

  4. Yep, you are right this is a versatile sketch and I like your play on it . I haven`t tried these two colors together ,but this gives me the inclination to try them . I think this is a definite summer color combo. And thank you for reminding me that I have the Round Array stamp set ….I forgot (blush) Happy Monday !

    • I am with Sonny. I forgot about the A Round Array set in my collection of stamps. Thanks for the inspiration to get it out this week, Brian. FAB:)

  5. Great card! The colors are wonderful together and oh the snipping! Can’t wait for the video tomorrow!

  6. Love the bright orange and bright pink together. Go bold or go home. Well, you are home, well, you know what I mean…..

  7. Lovely summery card, Brian! These really are the colours of the season as anyone would know if they’ve been hooked to the tennis over the past few weeks (French Open, Queens, Eastbourne – all the top ladies’ tennis dresses are pink/tangerine – yummy!) I also love this new flower and those clever pearls on your white banner. You’re not just a pretty face are you?!

  8. Now that’s a “wake me up” card! LOL Nice to start the day with a big smile for sure. As I was sitting here I was thinking of how strange word usage can be. Growing up if we called someone “snippy” it was a negative comment meaning they were short tempered. However, in our card making community, “snippy” is quite the compliment. That said, you are THE BEST “snippy” person I have ever met! Have yourself a super day and thank you for the smile first thing this morning!

  9. Love the Pumpkin Pie and Strawberry Slush colors together (though I’d never pare a slice of pumpkin pie with a strawberry slush!) … Ewww! As usual, your description of how you put the card together is great and, yes, you ARE “nice like that”. I think I am going to pull out these colors today! The sketch itself is fun, too.

  10. Wow.
That is a bold colour combo- I LOVE it!!! Well done!

  11. Great card as usual! I’ve been following you for quite a while, Brian, and I always love to see what you come up with each day! You are a big part of the reason I got into Stampin Up! and am a demonstrator now… so thanks for the daily inspiration!
I am dying to see what you have done with this month’s Paper Pumpkin, btw. You always think outside the box with these things and get so creative with them… am I really gonna have to wait till July 4?!?

  12. Super adorable card Brian. The orange and pink say “it’s finally summer” to me. Everything about this card is working for me. Thanks for the heads up on matching the stamped image and coordinating punch. Great job

  13. Oooo,oh I love it Brian !! The colors too , oh and that stamp set will be mine ,on my next order !! Love it friend !!!
    Hugs frenchie

  14. I agree, so fear not.
    Of course you snipped!
Thanks for the tip, I will be mounting that set this morning!
    Great card, BTW!

  15. WOW!! I agree, this is a very, very BOLD color combination, but it works beautifully. I think that DSP, although a bit busy, really compliments the flower without taking anything from it. Great detail with the little, orange color pearls.

  16. Brian,
Your projects and your humor always brighten my day! Thanks for sharing!

  17. I have always liked orange and pint together. You’ve put the card together so well. I think the lines in the dsp mimic the lines in the flowers petals.

  18. I have used this combination so many times! It also looks really good with Night of Navy. Looove it.

  19. Orange normally only looks good on an orange, but I have to say it looks great on your card. It is so light and sunny.

  20. LOVE!!! What a beautiful color combo!!

  21. Great design, scale and use of color and pattern. Fresh take on retro colors.

  22. WOW! Awesome creation. Love that DP on this card. I bet if I saw the sheet I would say, “Yuck, too busy” but works well here. LOL I am dying to see your video, I HATE paper snipping anything.

  23. Great colors, paired very well! Such a bright and cheery card 🙂

  26. Love the card. Thanks for the directional mounting tip on the flower stamp. Flower Shop gave me fits until I figured it out

  27. Pink and orange make for a fun and cheery combo! I love your card, Brian! Thanks for playing with The Paper Players!

  28. Such a fun card, Brian! Love the cheerful color combo and that big, bold blossom. Although, pink and orange are one my favorite color combos, so I would never disagree with that pairing. Looks great! Thank you for joining us this week at the Paper Players! 🙂
