I am guilty of rushing into Christmas before Halloween and Thanksgiving have been given their proper due. As an apology to Halloween, I’ve created a fun card for today’s project for Fab Friday. Here’s my project:
And here’s the FabFriday sketch that inspired my card:
- Busy, Busy, Busy. I just love this page of candy corn paper – it’s from Motley Monsters Designer Series Paper. I wanted to use it as the background for this little monster, but the detail in the paper was just too busy – it was hard to get this [relatively] small object to pop against the busy background – and I really wanted it to shine. Time to clean things up a bit. I added an extra layer of Whisper White cardstock, which gave me the perfect backdrop for the cute monster and his dangly banners.
- Washi Banners. The card was all set to glue down (as a general rule, I don’t start gluing until I am 100% happy with the design), but something was missing. I had three banners that needed a little “something” extra. To add a little “umph” to the Tangerine Tango and Crushed Curry banners, I simply added strips of Designer Washi Tape (Retro Fresh and Color Me Autumn) and then snipped the tape on the end. Did you miss my video about the GREATEST way in the world to store your washi tape? If you missed it, check it out here.
- Weight a Minute! Whether a card is complex or simple, it should always be balanced. Because my monster flower (for lack of a better term) is positioned in the top, left corner of the central panel, I pointed the banners a bit to the right. I moved the banners around beneath the monster flower (OK, now I really like the term) until I felt it was balanced with the white background. Remember the squint technique? This is a perfect time to give it a try – and then send me a nickel (that’s an important part).
Stamp Sets: Freaky Friends, Ghoulish Greetings Inks: Tangerine Tango, Tuxedo Black Memento Papers: Tangerine Tango, Basic Black, Whisper White, Crushed Curry, Motley Monsters Designer Series Paper Accessories: 1-3/4″ Circle punch, 2″ Circle punch, 2-3/4″ Scallop Circle punch, Retro Fresh Designer Washi Tape, Color Me Autumn Designer Washi Tape
I hope you’ll pop over to the FabFriday challenge blog to check out the designs by the other Design Team Members – you won’t be sorry.
Thanks for stopping by today!

Great card Brian. It has one of my favorite things … candy corn. I love the layered tag little monster embellishment on the front of the card. You did a great job.
Candy corn is kinda one of the most awesome things about this time of year, and Brian you make candy corn proud with this flippin ADORABLE card!!!! And I love the monster flower!
ps… how many nickels have you received so far?
Oh, this is adorable, love it from top to bottom!!! and pointing the banners slightly to the right was a genius move because it kind of filled in the white space there, this balanced the designs perfectly.
Thank you for sharing.
Everything about this card is perfect. The layered borders, minimizing the busy pattern, the cute monster flower and the washi tape banners. I don’t use washi tape often but want to try layering it on card stock thanks for the great idea!
Monster flower is cute, I was thinking “monster medal.” Whatever, it’s adorable!
The Cute Card Award goes to you ! I like the dsp used that way big time (don`t you just love that Candy Corn dsp ?) It is very very busy and you fixed that perfectly !
And those banners are clever ,especially the Washi tape one !!! Lots of good ideas here ….glad I came !
an adorable Halloween card. Love it.
So Cute! Love the added washi tape on the banners! TFS!
You are so funny, Brian! (Referring to you Washi Tape Storage Video). But when it comes to creativity, you are serious, thoughtful and, in my never humble opinion, have a unique blend of organization which results in some stunning cards. I’m amazed at how your rather “off the wall” interpretation of some of the sketches and challenges result in such phenomenal cards. And what a neat Fungeon…bet your mom does your cleaning!
wow. Just WOW!! You REALLY brought that sketch to vivid life Brian! Lovin’ your card and all the great tips that came with it!
I absolutely love the candy corn DSP but you are right Brian – it is really, really busy. Leave it to you to know how to tone it down while still having it’s beauty show through. This is one fantastic card. I just love it! Great job my friend.
Love the addition of the washi tape! Just the right touch.
I just love your tips, tricks and reminders. Learn something every time! As I’m a relatively new card maker, I enjoy reading your thought processes. Thankutoomuch!
Howdy Brian,
What a great card – funny but I’ve been playing with washi too!
Love the use of all the layering as well. Your card is balanced and eye-catching.
Blessings,
Barb
Awesome card Brian – love the dimension and the perfect colour combo. Popped over from FabFri#51 so glad I did – man you have been busy lol. Cheers
