Starter Color Combinations for Birthday Celebrations

On Friday, as I shared my birthday blog candy giveaway, I told you that I don’t like to make a big deal about my birthday.  Still, it’s been amazing to receive all of your birthday wishes and amazing cards.  How wonderful!  As we roll off the high from my birthday celebration and start preparing for the release of Stampin’ Up!’s Occasions Catalog in January – you know that book is always filled with great inspiration for birthday projects.

Today, I’m sharing my suggestions for great starting points when choosing colors for birthday cards.  There are all kinds of birthday cards, and I’m focusing on three – cards for him, cards for her and cards for kids.  These are intended to be starting points – while others will definitely work, I’ve selected a central color.  You can pick two or three of the other colors.  No rules.  If you have a hard time with color selection, add these color charts to your repertoire of color combinations.

DISCLAIMER:  In order to pull together colors for a specific group of people, I had to make some widespread generalizations.  For example, pink might be a great card for most women – but not all women like pink.  You still have to make selections based on the person for whom you are creating a card, and that might require you to edit my selections below.  Again, these are generalizations that can’t possibly apply to every man, woman or child.  Still, I think they’re a great starting point.  🙂

  • Birthday Color Inspiration – Starter Colors for Him.  I’ve talked about the importance of color in cards for men since I started as a demonstrator.  I see so many all-brown and all-blue cards that are for men, but men have it in their hearts to find other colors appealing.  Orange and purple and yellow and green can also be very successful on a card for a man – especially when the card is celebratory and fun.  Start by using is sparingly, but there are so many other great colors you can use for his card.

  • Birthday Color Inspiration – Starter Colors for Her.  The left side of my Starter Colors for Him featured shades of blue and aqua.  Similarly, the left side of my Starter Colors for Her are shades of pink and coral.  Not every woman would love this color palette (my mom loves blues and greens), but some of these colors could be a great starting point.

  • Birthday Color Inspiration – Starter Colors for Kids.  Birthday cards for kids are almost always bright and cheery.  You can almost always reach for colors in the Brights color family for great color combinations on a child’s card.  They are the most basic colors of blue, purple, red, orange and yellow.  Cheery fun!

  1. Gorgeous mixes of color, BK. I’m a huge fan of using lots of color (if you wish) on masculine cards. You demonstrate this so well!

  2. This is so very helpful! Gorgeous mix of colors….thank you, Brian!

  3. I have a file on your color combos and these will go there for retrieval when making birthday cards. I have lots of family birthdays in February, so your timing is perfect. Thanks.

  4. I love your birthday color combinations! I would be happy to get a birthday card in any of these palettes, even the masculine one! I totally agree that cards for men should have color, too. I can’t stand making cards that are all taupe or grey, so why would anyone want to receive one like that? Three cheers for color!

  5. Wow, these colors scream FUN! I must step outside the neutrals box for men…Great tip.

  6. Thank you (once again), Brian!! These are beautiful. I wish you could print a set of all your color combos as flash cards!!!

  9. I’ve been wracking my brain for inspiration for a card for my sister’s birthday. This post has given me lots of help, thanks Brian.

  10. This is extremely helpful. I think I’ve mentioned to you before, the longest part of my design is picking the color combos. Seriously…I have a huge issue with that. I can never decide fast enough. Thank you so much for your wonderful inspiration. I am going to print this out and save it in my “Brian” file. Merry Christmas, my friend. You ROCK!
