BIRTHDAY for InKing Royalty Blog Hop

Many of my Stampin’ Up! team members (not only those with blogs) share their gorgeous projects in our team’s Facebook community – there’s such amazing and inspiring creativity in this group! I’m always excited when my team’s blog hop rolls around, though, because I get to share some of their amazing work with you. I’m just as excited to see their projects as you are, and I am proud to share them with you.

February blog hopWelcome to InKing Royalty’s February Blog Hop! This year’s Blog Hop themes are inspired by a single word – and this month our projects are centered around BIRTHDAY. It’s always special to celebrate the birthday of someone you love, so handmade birthday cards are always fun to share. We are excited to share our creations with you today! After you read my post, I hope you’ll hop over to the next person on the list at the base of this post.

You’re a Classic

For my BIRTHDAY project for this InKing Royalty Blog Hop, I wanted to mix elements from different products – my card mixes masculine and feminine with bright and dark. I’ve combined papers from the Occasions Catalog, Annual Catalog and Sale-a-Bration brochure to make one sweet card. Here’s my card:

Geared Up Garage, Painted Seasons Designer Series Paper, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, birthday card

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Your a Classic. My card started with the mushroom-filled Designer Series Paper from the Second Release of Sale-a-Bration items. The pattern and colors are so reminiscent of kitchen wallpaper from my childhood that I HAD to pair it with this “You’re a Classic” sentiment from Geared Up Garage. The “Happy Birthday” sentiment is from the Amazing Life stamp set. Here’s a look at the Geared Up Garage Bundle: Geared Up Garage Bundle, Stampin' Up! 150610After I stamped the sentiment with black ink, I was worried I hadn’t inked it up enough. When I checked the set, though, I noticed the set has a weathered look that I actually like. The weathered look of the stamp pairs perfectly with the weathered look of the Classic Garage 6″ x 6″ Designer Series Paper. I used two textured pieces from this pack – the Crushed Curry and Basic Gray pieces. • Painted Seasons Bundle. Last week Stampin’ Up! introduced three new Sale-a-Bration options that will be available through March 31 (or while supplies last). My card was inspired by the sweet mushroom paper that’s part of the Painted Seasons Bundle. Here’s a closer look at this fun paper:  Geared Up Garage, Painted Seasons Designer Series Paper, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, birthday cardThe Painted Seasons Designer Series Paper is half of the Painted Seasons Bundle that can be selected with a $100 order. The paper includes 3 each of four double-sided designs.Painted Seasons Bundle, Stampin' Up! 150349
  • Retro Color Combination. When I combined this pattern from Painted Seasons Designer Series Paper with the Crushed Curry piece from Classic Garage 6″ x 6″, I knew I had a perfect match. Upon closer inspection, though, there’s no Crushed Curry in Painted Seasons. Many of the leaves and berries in the paper are colored with Mango Melody that washes into a light Crushed Curry when watercolored, so I stuck with it. 1. Love your take on the one word challenge and the color combo. Your card is very pretty with the lacy strip from the laser cut paper. It really adds a nice feminine touch. Have a great day!

    • Thanks so much, Hilda! That strip was my last addition to the design – was so happy with how it added to the overall design. Thanks for noticing and for commenting. ♥

  2. I love the layers, layout, and colors on your card. So I just love the card!

  3. Just loving your InKing Royalty’s February Blog Hop……SO MANY amazing and talented papercrafters are sharing this month. LOVE the combination of masculine and feminine you created on this card. Thanks for sharing!!!

  4. Oh goodness, do I love this combo of products you’ve put together! You are a master of design, my friend!

  5. Fabulous mix of colors and patterns, Brian!

  6. Oh my! The first thing I thought of when I saw your card was kitchen wallpaper! Love it and love your bold and beautiful card.

  7. When I first saw the Sale-A-Bration paper, I knew I like it, however; you made me remember why. We had similar wallpaper in my children’s room. Brian, your card is striking, the lights and dark paper compliment each other. Now off to see what fun cards the rest of the Royals have created.

    • Thanks so much, Katrina! I love this page, but all of the pages in this pack are amazing. I’m glad you have a history with that wallpaper, too. 🙂 Thanks!

  8. Very classic and vintage. Super fun in these colors and with that adorable border.

  9. I can’t wait to get my hands on this set. I love your color combination and the fact that your card today can be used for either a guy or a gal. The hubs was a mechanic and racer all his life and I know I finally have a stamp set that I can use to make cards for him that he can actually relate to. Great job today as always Brian. Now………..on to hop around and see what the other fabulous stampers have come up with.

    • Thanks so much, Grace! I know you are going to love making cards for your husband and his friends with this set – perfect for car lovers. Glad you like how I tied this sentiment to a less-automotive-themed paper. Thanks for your comments! ♥

  10. Beautifully done Brian

  11. If I saw this card in a line up, I would never have known you made it. I like it but just amazed me how different the elements were. The sketch is one you would use but it just surprised me. Goes to show, you are a surprising and amazing person! You are right in that the mushrooms sort of look vintage. The mother of a friend of mine would have loved that pattern as wallpaper with matching hot pads and oven mitts.

    • Thanks so much, Chris! I have used this layout (the diagonal sentiment) so many times that I worried it would be predictable – glad you wouldn’t have picked it out of a lineup. 🙂 This paper is great, right?

  12. Wow, I’m now in love with the Classic Garage DSP. Those patterns/textures on your card are fantastic!

  13. Love all the papers and love the mushrooms!!! Really great card!

  14. You have rocked it once again Brian. the diagonal design is the finishing touch to set this card apart. that paper does remind me of my grandma. have wonderful memories of making homemade kluski noodles with her.

    • Thanks so much, Dara! It was a fun card to pull together – and I love a good diagonal (this isn’t the first time I’ve done it). 🙂 I’m so glad you see an old kitchen, too! Mmmm…noodles. ♥

  15. Really a lovely card with a great color combination.

  16. Love the colors and love love this whimsical paper .
Such a fun card you created !!

  17. I really like your card! You are a whiz at cutting diagonal cardstock strips! Could you Please share with us, How you cut your diagonal strips? Like , do you have a formula, that is so wide by so tall? I’m NOT explaining myself to well? Your diagonal cards ALWAYS look so great and put together, any tips on how we can achieve them as well? TFS!

  18. Awesome card, Brian! I would never have thought to team up the 2 different DSP packs!

    • Thanks, Robin! I “dreamed” that they would match perfectly. I was nervous when I saw the color was actually orange, but the watercolored elements actually look yellow. Yay!

  19. i cant wait to get my shipment with that dsp. your card is just so cute and i love the color combo.

  20. Oh wow, you’re right, Brian. That does look like wallpaper from those days. I knew people with kitchens done in it. Your card is wonderful. Love how you used the laser cut paper. I always forget about it; thanks for the reminder!

    • Thanks so much for your comments, Candy! I’ve been holding on to that little strip of laser paper for a long time, just waiting for the right project – this was it. So glad you like what I did with it.

  21. Awesome layout and use of DSP!
