This week’s Global Design Project challenge offers an un-seasonal color combination – Blueberry Bushel, Call me Clover and Real Red. Even with these primary colors, I was able to make a sweet Christmas card with the Playful Penguins. Here’s my card:
And here’s the banner for the challenge that inspired my card:
- Playful Penguins. I wasn’t really sold on the Playful Penguins stamp set until I saw the samples presented in the Holiday Catalog. The samples showed me how adorable these dapper penguins could be – at which point I HAD to have them. Here’s a look at the Playful Penguins stamp set:
There’s no set of dies or punch that coordinate with the images in this set, so I stamped them on Thick Whisper White cardstock and cropped with my Brother Cut-n-Scan. I love the sentiments in the set – love this very familiar font.
- Snowy Slope. I needed a snowy slope for my adorable penguins, so I reached for the In the Woods Dies that coordinate with the Winter Woods stamp set. I love the dies in this set – lots of trees and leaves. Every time I flip through my dies, I try to take a mental inventory of the shapes and dies in each. When it came time to build a snowy slope, I knew just where to go.
- Tips for Combining Colors. These colors are, to say the least, tricky. If you use all three in equal amounts, they can be a bit overpowering. If you want a card that’s not overpowered by these three bright colors (but still want to use the colors), I suggest that you showcase one and minimize the others.
On my card, the blue background is the boldest panel of color – the reds and greens are included in small spots but still play a very important role.
Stamp Sets: Playful Penguins Papers: 2018-2020 6″ x 6″ In Color Designer Series Paper, Real Red, Call Me Clover, Thick Whisper White Inks: Memento Tuxedo Black, Real Red, Call Me Clover Accessories: In the Woods Dies, Stampin’ Dimensionals
I hope you’ll pop over to the Global Design Project site to see the cards by the design team members and to play along with this week’s challenge.

Perfect pops of green and red to dress up the adorable penguins!
Very cool guys! Love the background!
Sweet card Brian! Need this stamp set for my “Flaming Macaroni Penguins” Scout Patrol! : )
I love the saying on this super card. You have the absolute perfect amount of color and layering to show off these penguins who seem to have their own attitude going. LOL Love it.
Wonderful card with this color challenge! The background of the script design DSP is unusual, but it really works!
Love this sweet card. Thanks for the tip about using one main color and minimizing the use of the other two colors. It certainly works well on your card. Great color combo for the challenge. Have a great day!
Oh these guys are dapper with their colorful accessories! Makes me smile!
