Thursday was a really special day (that I missed on account of the hacking). I’ve been a design team member at CAS(E) This Sketch long enough for one of my sketches to recur as a “Retro” Sketch. How cool is that?! Before I share that sketch, here’s the spooky Halloween card I made with a crazy mix of patterns that worked together to make a festive card:
My card is the standard 5-1/2″ tall (11″ scored at 5-1/2″), but I trimmed the card to 3-1/2″ wide for a tall, slender card that will fit perfectly in a standard envelope. And here’s the banner for the challenge that inspired my card:

Tips, Tricks and Reminders
- Plaid Tidings & Spooky Salutations. I’m head-over-heels in love with the Plaid Tidings 6″ x 6″ Designer Series Papers – the mix of gorgeous plaids are incredible and perfect for so many holidays and occasions. I used TWO patterns from this pack of papers together on this card – two patterns that shouldn’t look so great together (but I think they do). While both patterns feature the same colors, one has an orange base while the other has a purple base. I also juxtaposed the horizontal plaid of one piece with the diagonal plaid of another. Here’s a look at the colors and patterns in the Plaid Tidings 6″ x 6″ Designer Series Papers:
The sentiment on my card is pulled from the oh-so-fun Festive Corners photopolymer stamp set – such a great set for Halloween, Christmas and Valentine’s Day! Here’s a look at this stamp set:
- Shiny bats. The bats on the face of my very-plaid card are cropped with the Halloween Magic Dies, part of the Hallows Night Magic Bundle. Boy, do I love these bats (one die cut out all three)! Here’s a closer look:
So, how did I get them so shiny? It is easier than you might think. I applied a strip of packing tape to a small piece of Basic Black cardstock and then ran them through my Stampin’ Emboss & Die Machine. So easy! They look embossed, but they weren’t messy at all! So fun, so easy!
- Spooky Color Combination. There’s hardly a Halloween project that doesn’t feature Pumpkin Pie or Basic Black, but I love when other colors are added in. I can think of past Halloween suites with Cajun Craze, Crushed Curry and Old Olive, but I always love when purple is included for Halloween. If you like this mix of Pumpkin Pie, Rich Razzleberry and Basic Black, I hope you’ll save this for future reference:
Stamp Sets: Festive Corners Papers: Plaid Tidings 6″ x 6″ Designer Series Paper, Pumpkin Pie, Basic Black, Whisper White Inks: Memento Tuxedo Black Accessories: Stitched Rectangles Dies, Halloween Magic Dies, Stampin’ Dimensionals
I hope you’ll pop over to the CAS(E) This Sketch site to see the cards by the design team members and to play along with this week’s challenge.
Thanks for stopping by today!

Nothing spooky about this card. Just down right FABULOUS my friend.
Packing tape? How batty is that? I love how you think.
Thanx for the tape tip ! Love this card because of the simplicity ,colors ,plaid dsp and those shiny bat critters !!
Love the mix of plaids and the easy way to make the shiny bats. Enjoy your day!
Really Brian? I have never, ever, ever in my lifetime seen any mix plaids and have them look great until I saw your card. You always laugh when I say you are an artistic genius but you’ve proved it again today with this card. I can’t wait to get my hands on this plaid DSP!! Oops, I never thought I’d say that either. LOL Have a Super Saturday my friend.
I love this card. Mixing patterns with the same colors is something I learned to do years ago with scrapbooking. I’m glad you reminded me of this with your great card.
At first I thought I saw glitter on those ? bats. But the I knew better. Very clever to use packing tape!
That Plaid Tidings DSP is DELICIOUS! Love the card!
