Behind the Scenes of my Storybook Moments Card

Yesterday I shared a sweet card I made with several products from Stampin’ Up!’s Spring Mini Catalog (you can see that project here). My card combines elements of the Timeless Plaid 6″ x 6″ Designer Series Paper with the Storybook Moments Specialty Designer Series Paper and the Greetings for All Mix & Match Ephemera Pack. The card, itself, wasn’t that notable, but how I got there is a fun story. Today I want to share a little behind-the-scenes look at my experience (it’s not an uncommon experience for the projects I make).

On Tuesday night I hosted our monthly InKing Royalty team meeting (live in our Facebook group). Team members from all over the U.S. tuned in to hear about current events and product releases at Stampin’ Up!. We celebrated team member successes and welcomed new team members to the group. What fun! I occasionally invite team members or friends to make a project during our call, but I had nothing planned. Rather than just end the meeting early, I decided to multitask and design a project (or the start of a project) on the call.

Designing a card with the Storybook Moments Specialty Designer Series Paper, Stampin' Up!, Brian KingThe impromptu card-making session started with a pile of new goodies I pulled together moments before the call. While I’ve studied every inch of these Designer Series Papers while making swatch books and sorting product shares, I haven’t yet had a chance to really play with them. Yay! The Greetings for All pack was also intriguing to me, so I was excited to open them up and sort them the sentiments (I hadn’t even had a chance to open them up…what a shame!)

Designing a card with the Storybook Moments Specialty Designer Series Paper, Stampin' Up!, Brian KingI started with a Boho Blue card base and pondered several designs in the pack of papers – this one won out. While you only see the flowers in the card I shared yesterday, I picked from several Boho Blue images in the Specialty Designer Series Paper punchouts. The watering can is really sweet, but I couldn’t make it work with this big sentiment and didn’t want to cover up too many of the blue flowers.

Designing a card with the Storybook Moments Specialty Designer Series Paper, Stampin' Up!, Brian KingI considered a Crumb Cake base – would that help showcase the Timeless Plaid 6″ x 6″ Designer Series Paper better? Do I need the blue base behind to tie-in the blue elements on the card? I added Boho Blue to the white circle with a Blending Brush to accent the blue. While I love the subtle texture it creates, I decided to switch the circle for a Crumb Cake one. That’s when I decided to add another layer behind the plaid pattern – a white frame and then a Crumb Cake frame.

Designing a card with the Storybook Moments Specialty Designer Series Paper, Stampin' Up!, Brian KingI played around with adding this sweet bunny to the card to create a cluster of Boho Blue elements, but that didn’t work out for me. It doesn’t mean she won’t show up in a future project. 🙂

I didn’t really cut or assemble my card on the call with my team – I just bounced some ideas around to create s simple card with elements and colors that work well together. After the call, it took me 10 minutes to make final decisions and assemble my card. I switched out the sentiment (a smaller sentiment worked better) and added a white fence over the Crumb Cake circle and added a little Gold Twisted Thread and some Low-Profile Dots for some elevated shine. Here’s a look at my finished card:

Timeless Plaid Designer Series Paper, Storybook Moments Specialty Designer Series Paper, Stampin' Up!, Brian KingOne more behind-the-scenes bit – I didn’t realize this on my call, but the 4-1/4″ x 11″ card base I grabbed out of my cardstock file folder before the card was actually 4-1/4″ x 10-3/4″ (just shy of the full length). I don’t know when or why I shaved a 1/4″ strip off such a large piece of cardstock, but… Anyway, while designing and assembling the card, I didn’t even notice this small difference (I don’t typically fold my card until it’s finished. When I set up my card to take this photo, it was OBVIOUS to me that the back of the card base was shorter than the front when it leaned back a little more than usual. It’s not as obvious in the photo (thanks to the smoke-and-mirrors of photography). You might not be able to see it in the photo above, but the difference induced a little panic at the time.

Sometimes the journey can be as exiting as the destination. I appreciate you engaging me in this short journey. 🙂

Thanks for stopping by today!

Brian
