More Ornament Keepsakes – a PPA Color Challenge

I’m a sucker for non-traditional colors during the holidays. I interrupt this blog post for a couple of quick definitions:

  • Traditional Christmas colors: red, green, gold, silver and white.
  • Non-traditional Christmas colors: pink, purple, blue and yellow.

Because of my fascination with uncommon holiday hues, my mind went straight to Christmas when I saw the colors for the Pals Paper Arts Challenge this week – Marina Mist, Summer Starfruit and Real Red. What sets could I use to highlight these colors? How could I mix these colors to make a beautiful Christmas card. Three or four prototypes later (and about 75 churns of my Big Shot), I have a final submission to the challenge:

I stamped these beautiful ornaments on First Edition Specialty Designer Series Paper and then cut them out with my Holiday Ornaments Framelits Dies. I love the antiqued look that’s added to almost anything stamped on this DSP. These ornaments are no exception. Add a little band of satin ribbon and a gorgeous Christmas sentiment, and these ornaments are ready to spread Holiday Cheer.

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Play with the arrangement of small objects on the card. I stamped and cut out ornaments of all shapes, sized and colors to determine the layout of the ornaments on this card. I must have had 15 in front of me before deciding on this layout and color combination. The time it takes to create alternative options is not wasted if it gets you to your desired result.
  • Product shout-out disguised as a tip. Instead of a helpful hint here, I want to suggest that you order a roll of the 3/8″ stitched satin ribbon if you haven’t already. It plays a small role in this card, but its smooth and shiny texture catch me off guard every time. It’s so easy to work with and so smooth to the touch.

  2. Brian, this is really stunning. Great, great job. I usually tend toward the traditional, so as I read your post, I really wasn’t expecting to love a Christmas card in SS, MM, and RR. But when I scrolled down and saw it, boy was I surprised! And what I’ll always remember from this post is, “If it gets you to the result, it’s not wasted”. Thanks for that.
