PP128 Color Challenge and a Happy Birthday

Today’s project is a birthday card that is inspired by this week’s Color Challenge by The Paper Players. First, I’ll share the card and then the inspiration:www.stampwithbrian.com - Happiest Birthday, PP128

You’ve probably already guessed the colors by now, but (in case you missed them), here they are:

Tips, Tricks and Reminders:

  • Small Patterns. When I set out to make a card with these colors, I knew I wanted to incorporate some luscious Designer Series Paper. After I flipped through them all, I realized we have a lot of choices for these three colors. I selected this detailed print from International Bazaar. I’ve always been fascinated with these little flowers (similar to the ones used in the World Treasures stamp set. I really played around with punching them out, trimming around them and layering them inside one another. In the end, I decided to just let the pattern be what it’s meant to be. All the layering made things way too fussy.
  • Play with colors. I don’t think I would have ever paired these colors together, but I’m glad I did. I am quite happy with how this card turned out and know I would have never gotten there without this color inspiration.
  • Pattern repeat. When I cropped my piece of Designer Series Paper, I already knew I wanted to repeat the pattern in my band across the front. To make things easier, I cut that piece 1/2″ longer (from top to bottom) and then trimmed it at 1/2″ across the bottom. That gave me a pattern that perfectly aligned with the patterns on the paper. After I layered the 1/2″ piece on Basic Gray and Daffodil Delight card stock, I positioned the band so that the images matched up with the DSP beneath. It’s a great effect.

  1. Good morning! The band is perfection. I love how you made the yellow and gray layer a little larger on the band so that that it really pops. Beautiful card!

  2. FABULOUSLY FUN card Brian. I’m not sure that these would be colors I would put together – but just goes to show you……Live outside your comfort zone and LIFE WILL BRING YOU MANY SURPRISES. Thanks for sharing this amazing surprise with me.

  3. There is something about blue and yellow together that I like and both of these colors are favorites of mine (Pacific Point and Daffodil Yellow ) but, I wouldn`t have thought about Basic Gray with them . I forget about Basic Gray …just like River Rock (which is a really nice quiet color) when putting together colors. But, the big point here is that great tip about using the end of the paper for being sure it lines up. …..How do you think of these things? I keep telliong you that you either should run online classes or write a book !!!!! I like your entry to The Paper Players assortment today. You just make us so proud !

  4. Another thing I want to mention…the band and making the layers broader…thanks Sylvia for bringing that to my attention . It does bring it forward. I don`t think of things like that . I just make a card . This is going to cause some serious thinking on my part about card design . I am really glad I read all of the other comments !! You can learn stuff .

  5. I really like this card too! I’m with Sonny, I’m a fan of blue and yellow, but would never have added the gray. Color challenges are great for that!! I love the layering of solid card stock behind the busier print and I especially like the repeating pattern you achieved by adding that 1/2 inch – genius!!

  6. Brian,
Hey can you provide the dimensions of the grey and yellow layered cardstock pieces in this card? The reason i am asking in particular, when you layer like for example the first grey piece then the yellow your layers always just show a hint of each color. When i do my layering my first layer would normally be 4″ wide x 5 1/4″ long. Second layer 3-3/4″ wide x 5 ” long. My layers seem to show alot more of each color between the layering.
It seems like when i look at your layering, the dimensions that you use are different?
If you could provide the grey and yellow layering in the middle and on the greeting also i would appreciate it so much.
    Thanks!
    Kathy

    • Kathy, traveling today but will measure when I get home. On these, I positioned the DSP on top of the card stock and eyeballed the cut I wanted. These wont be exact measures, but I’ll get them for you!

  7. Hope you enjoyed Leadership, Brian! Love this fab card…especially the layered band. This is a great color combo and one that I will try! Thanks for the kind comment on my card…very much appreciated!

  8. Your card design, Brian, has been a “go-to”
design of mine for a quicker card. I’ve either used the layering of the papers as you did or used paper and ribbon plus a layered sentiment. However, your tip on how you kept your DSP matching so well, was great. It’s like when you first start sewing and need to learn how to match the print fabric pieces!
This past year I finally purchased a Basic Gray ink pad. I go to it much more often now for sentiments instead of black … it is so much softer with both the brighter and lighter colors. Once again, thanks, Brian, for sharing your tips and prospective on this wonderful art!

  9. Love the color combo! What a great “oh my gosh I forgot Henry’s birthday” card (meaning quick card). What I do sometimes is to decide on a layout and precut pieces from my scrap pile. Then when I mess up and need a card in a panic type hurry, everything is cut and I just stick it together and run. Today’s card would be perfect for that. Thanks Brian.

  10. I love this card, Brian. And the pattern repeat tip…..sweet! Happy Sunday!

  11. Lovely card. No green! 😉

  12. Sheeesh!! I’m really late today but I have a great excuse…..my house if full of hungry, noisy grandchildren so I had to quiet them down with food!!
Ok, I have a few minutes before I have to go back downstairs so, let me tell you Brian that this combination of colors would never come to me on my own. That is one of the many reasons I like you and this awesome blog of yours, you really have an eye for color and how to use it. I know that the Paper Players give you the colors but it takes an artist like you to make them work. Thanks for this lovely card and I will be waiting, with the rest of us, to look at some of the pictures you took in Orlando.
    Have an awesome Sunday.
Go Seahawks!!!!! (my consolation team after my Cowboys, Packers, Broncos lost the chance to go to the Super Bowl) Ahhhhh!! there is always this year’s season. I’m a hard core Cowboys fan!!

  13. I just started following your blog Brian and I have to say… I really loved your card color combo. Thanks so much for sharing

  14. Absolutely beautiful card and layout, Brian! I love the way you used the DSP and lined it up on the band…certain continuity in this for sure. Lovely!

  15. Brian, this is a another great design. I also love blues and yellows together, but would not have thought of the gray. I love Basic Gray and you certainly are the “King” of matching DSP! What a super tip for us! Thanks for sharing and can’t wait to hear all about Leadership!

  16. Such unlikely color pairing makes a beautiful card. I love your blog. Can’t wait to hear about your convention. Did you take THEM by storm?

  17. I agree with all of the comments above, but need to add that this card make me feel very happy and I thank you for sharing your genius on making it with us!

  18. Brian, I love your clean crisp card. It is such a great layout. It is also nice to see a male member of The Paper Players design team. I am so anxious to see your creations each week and look forward to your creativity.

  19. Love your card, Brian! You really did my color combo justice this week and the little “pops” of Daffodil Delight are an awesome touch. Love it and you have inspired me to finally cut into this DSP! Have a great day! 🙂
