Come Fly with Me: A Paper Players Sketch Challenge

It’s Sunday, and you know what that means!  It’s time for a new challenge from The Paper Players.  Sketches are a wonderful way to hone your design skills.  Whether you are a newbie to card making or an old pro (not that you are old – you seem very young to me), sketches often remind us of design elements we forget to incorporate in our projects.  I hope you’ll participate in this sketch challenge.

Here’s the gorgeous layout from Anne Marie Heil:

When I saw this sketch, I knew I wanted to play around with my Sent with Love kit.  I played around with various images and patterns and colors before settling on these Pool Party and Tangerine Tango images from Sent with Love:www.stampwithbrian.com - Par Avion

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Hey! Who Put this Tangerine in My Pool!?  Never in a million years would I have ever paired Tangerine Tango with Pool Party.  Never.  But how wonderfully they work together here!  I don’t pretend to take credit for the combination – the DSP did all the work on that one.  The soft and gentle Pool Party balances the bold and vivacious Tangerine Tango beautifully!  I love it!
  • Sketch Inspiration.  Sketches are intended to be inspiration for a card.  You don’t always have to follow the sketch exactly.  I wish I could say that was the case here, but I can’t.  While I intentionally stretched the sketch a bit by replacing the band and coordinating adornment with the zig-zag pattern from the Sent with Love Designer Series Paper, I inadvertently left off one of the main features – the rectangular panel in the center of the card.  By the time everything was glued down and photographed, I couldn’t turn back.  I am such a rule breaker!
  • Check that DSP again!  We instinctively want to use DSP as a background for a central image.  Don’t forget, though, that several images in many of the DSPs can be snipped or punched for use as the focus of your card.  One of the main sheets of this paper has tags and globes and arrows that can be used for an assortment of cards.  I trimmed the globe and the zig-zag pattern to give these images new life.  So happy with that decision. stampwithbrian.com - Come Fly with Me

  1. I love this card, Brian! I NEVER would have put those colors together, either, but in this case they sure rock!! Keep doin’ what you’re doin’ ’cause you’ve sure got it right!!!

  2. I figured out why I was turned off by your blog at first; but you gotta know by know I’m a “Brian fanatic”!! Most bloggers talk about their day and blah, blah, blah and throw in bits about the card but don’t really get to the point…lots don’t give “recipes”. While you take the time to give great tips on how you created your card (you tell it like it is and I LOVE that!!)! Your blog is just so organized and if you take notice…..well, to be honest, I do follow a lot of blogs, and yours is the ONLY one is organized. Sure it’s great to hear the things going on in your life; but it’s a part of your blog; not the focus! I am very, VERY stubborn and hate to admit it when I’m wrong….. but when I’m wrong, I’m the first to admit and apologize…which I hope I have done so very clearly with you. If not, let me tell you now… I was absolutely wrong to judge you because your blog wasn’t like what I had been spoon-fed and I apologize profusely for making that personal!! Stamping With Brian is by far my all-time favorite SU blogger! Please never stop I do not take change well!! BIG hugs, Pam from Price, UT

    • I also love Brian’s blog. It is the first one I joined for updates and check faithfully each day. I love everything about his blog that you mentioned. Yes he promotes his business but in such a way that you don’t feel like it is pushed down your throat. Brian, please don’t change your format. Just maybe others will take pointers from you. And…..I love your card making style.

  3. Great card Brian, as usual.

  4. Oh my goodness!! I thougth the DSP in the background was a stamp…..that just goes to show you how little I know about it. Trimming the paper was a fabulous idea, I love the effect of the little snipped airplane on top of the globe that, by the way, was done with perfection and the trimmed zig-zag pattern on the edge. Great combination of colors too, Brian.

  5. LOVE everything about this card, especially the little snipped airplane. Your creativity is a wonder to behold!

  6. Eye-catching card. Love your use of multiple DSP’s. And yes the tangerine in your pool looks good!

  7. Tangerine in your pool? Great card!

  8. Love the card! That is my favorite product suite ever! I love the use of the DSP as the “edge’ too! 🙂

  9. Wow Brian! I love this card. So clever, so trendy…love it all!

  10. One of your best cards ever! I’m glad you left off the rectangle — it would have been too much, in my opinion. Hope you are getting lots of cards for the swap — I sent one!

  11. Oh Brian – did you really snip out that tiny plane??????? You have more patience then I have and I have LOTS of patience! 🙂 I have a friend in Florida who is a pilot, a friend in California who is a retired Lt. Col. in the Air Force and a nephew that is a pilot. They would all go nuts over this card. I guess I need to start yet another “wish” list! Have yourself a fantastic day Brian and thanks for the inspiration!

  12. Great look! And loving the colour combo 🙂

  13. I like the sketch and your sample is so neat ! You should win an award for being “snippy”…Cute idea having the plane crossing the globe …. and the border is definitely an eye catcher …. I really am getting attached to that Pool Party .

  14. I got this set and can’t wait to use it…love the card…love all of them, some days I can tell you that other days I have to get rolling quickly…..wish I just had a “repeat” key that says AWESOME CARD BRIAN.

  15. Brian – love you card. I wouldn’t have put those colors together. I have a hard time with orange colors — but this card is really great. As to the sketches — when I do sketch challenges – I find it hard to vary the sketch for the first card I make with that sketch — I always feel I have to follow all the rules or I will be in trouble – LOL I really like your clean crisp cards. Thanks for sharing your talent and your humor. Always such a pleasure.

  16. Awesome, happy card!

  17. To me, out looks like you did include the rectangle with the patterned paper behind your circle! Beautiful combination of colors. I need to stick my neck out more.

  18. Another Briantastic card!!! Very cute!!! Love the colors!! Sadly, I have several colors I haven’t used much.

  19. Brian, Great card! All the elements are fantastic together!

  22. Fabulous card, Brian! It doesn’t get any better than this!

  23. Very cool card, even if you were a renegade with the sketch! I love the colors together, may have to try some Tangerine and Pool Party together myself!

  24. Brian, love the card. Also saw your name come up on the prize patrol at St. Louis Regionals looked for you to say hi, but I never found you.

  25. Donna from St. Louis

I LOVE Tangerine Pool! I pinned your card, and am now “following” you on Pinterest. (sounds kind of creepy) I was at the St. Louis Regional Sat. and missed you! Thanks for telling us about your life. It’s only by sharing that we make friends enjoy life more.

  26. Fabulous card, Brian! Love how you featured the DSP from the suite. Such a clever take on AM’s sketch!

  27. This has got to be one of my favorite cards so far of yours! It helps that I’m a sucker for anything that nods to the “mod” days and that color combo is to die for!

  28. Loving the Tangerine Tango and Pool Party mix, Brian! Fantastic layering and can I get a whoop whoop for the perfect fussy cutting? You rocked my sketch this week! 🙂 I’m sooooo ready for a vacation….
