Admit One: A Spooky Invitation – PPA168

It’s Thursday, which means it’s time for a Pals Paper Arts Challenge.  Woo hoo!  Today, Margaret Moody has a sketch for us that’s perfect for any occasion.  Before I had any idea of how I would use the sketch, I selected Halloween as my holiday of choice.  I have no Halloween-dedicated sets, so why?  Why do I do this to myself?!?  Because I’m crazy – crazy for a challenge.

Here’s my card:Dude You're Welcome, That's the Ticket, Stampin' Up!, Brian KingAnd here’s Margaret’s sketch that inspired it all:

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Holiday stamps.  Do you recognize the two stamp sets I used in this card?  I’ll give you a clue – neither of the stamp sets are specific to Halloween – one is designed with a variety of stamps for many different occasions, and the other one has nothing to do with holidays.  Wanna’ guess?  Well do that now – we’ll get back to that later.
  • The bat.  I don’t have a stamp set with a bat.  So, how did I get that nocturnal mammal on the card?  Well, I snipped it out of a page of Witches’ Brew Designer Series Paper.  It’s the same page that has the newspaper print used at the bottom of the card.
  • Repeating patterns.  OK, so the stamp sets I used are That’s the Ticket (for the tickets) and Dude You’re Welcome (for the moon/medallion on the right).  I used the “Special Occasion” stamp from Dude You’re Welcome – stamped it in black and orange.  Snipped the outside of the black and the inside of the orange – and offset the orange a bit, adding a nice “flair” inside the circle.  I decided to repeat the jagged edge of the circles in the Tasteful Trim strip across the center of the card.
  • A fourth bullet.  I normally only have three bullet point in the Tips, Tricks and Reminders of my post, but I have a fourth I want to point out.  I just wanted to point to the fact that I have used a glimmer brad in this card.  Can I please get props for that?  Thank you – you’re always so nice to me.That's the Ticket, Dude You're Welcome, Stampin' Up!, Brian King

Single Stamps.  Today’s post features a Halloween project, but I want to share some new Single Stamps that Stampin’ Up! announced yesterday.  I’ve never been super-psyched about the single stamps, but I really love these.  Check them out here (click on the photo below):Single Stamps: Assortment 5 -- Holiday

Still want more Halloween?  If more Halloween is what you are looking for, then August’s Best of…25 Years set is for you.  Check it out here (click on the icon below):Best of Halloween

A Winner.  I’ve been entering a lot of challenges lately – it’s a great way to keep ideas fresh.  I was so happy to learn yesterday that I was selected as a Perfect Prince for Freshly Made Sketches.  Last night, I found out that my Swallowtail card (see it here) was recognized as a Top 3 Pick at Create with Connie and Mary.  Woo hoo!  I know this won’t be a common occurrence, but I’m really starting to like these challenges.

  1. Congrats Brian! Your swallowtail really did deserve to win. It is absolutely stunning!

Congrats on your Perfect Princehood Brian!! That Swallowtail card was amazing!! And this Halloween card is amazing too… not sure what is MORE amazing – your use of a glittery glimmer brad or the fact that you made this card without a Halloween stamp set!! Very clever and superbly snipped too!! 🙂

  3. Congrats! Perfect Prince indeed. Although I prefer Knightly King! Wondering how much you really do like glittery glimmer or not? I spotted that brad right a way. Been using it more then you usually do. Just poking fun, please don’t take it the wrong way. Love how your card turned out.

  4. Great Halloween card Brian! I am sooo ready for fall (okay, and cooler temperatures) and thus card sets the tone. Yay you for using a glimmer brad! Thanks for sharing.

  5. Hi Brian, Yes, your Swallowtail card was deserving, good job! Your snipping talent is beyond great. I tend to hold my breath when I snip. Have a great day. Thanks a bunch.

  6. Cute Halloween card ! I think it`s pitiful that you have to cut your images out of paper because you don`t have any Halloween stuff to make cards . Not even a Jack o, Lantern stamp? Oh you poor poor thing ! We may need to set up some sort of fund for your needy cause !! Oh the unfairness of it all !! And you keep up such a good Kingly image !

  7. I love how you challenge yourself! That is what makes you such a great Stamper! But Brian you do need at least one Halloween set! lol
    Love and Hugs!

  8. Sonny and Shirley – I do have the cute Halloween Happiness set with the pumpkins, but I failed to realize it was a Halloween set because I think of the cool, patterned pumpkins. AND I just ordered the Best of Halloween set because I felt so vulnerable last night. I will now be armed with an arsenal of Halloween Goodness.

  9. Really? Did you think we missed that use of that oh-so-stunning glimmer brad? LOL!
    Such a cute card!

  10. Since the colors of fall are my favorite I fell in love with this card. Great job Brian! You really have patience to do all that snipping! I love dies and punches because then I don’t have to snip! LOL

  11. You are amazing…probably many of us would have never attempted a Halloween card with no stamp set….only you could pull this off! Thank goodness for DSP to allow us to cut out certain images…thank you for reminding us to get out of the box and use our imaginations and get more creative….hail Brian!

  12. Congrats on your challenge success Brian! And, love your card with all of your clever tricks.

  13. You’ve used more glimmer brads than me lately! I love the detail it gives though. Love the zig-zag trim and that medallion is the perfect place to perch your bat! Another great card, Brian!

  14. I love how you used the sketch, Brian. The tickets are a great look on this Halloween card! Thanks for sharing with us at Pals Paper Arts this week!
