I hope your Labor Day Weekend was wonderful! It was rainy in Atlanta (what’s new?), and I can feel the weather shifting to the Fall – it’s the most wonderful time of the year. With that in mind, I had no problem sitting down yesterday to make a Fall-themed card for The Paper Players’ theme challenge. Here’s my card:
And here’s the challenge badge for Sandy Mathis’ challenge:
Tips, Tricks and Reminders
- Emboss Resist. I stamped the image of the deer on this plaid piece of Sweater Weather Designer Series Paper with VersaMark (a slow-drying watermark ink) and then heat embossed it with Clear Stampin’ Emboss Powder. I then drug my Chocolate Chip stamp pad over and over the paper – and then over it again. The ink does not dry on the embossed image. With a quick swipe of a paper towel, my deer was all clean and ready to shine on this card. The ink didn’t fully cover the paper – you can still see the patterned DSP peeking out, but that’s A-OK with me.
- MIxing Patterns. When I originally dreamed up this card, the deer was to be mounted on another piece of the Crushed Curry plaid Designer Series Paper. Once the card was laid out, though, I was face-to-face with an overwhelming amount of Crushed Curry plaid. I love this plaid, but it proved to me that you can have too much of a good thing. Instead, I bordered the deer with a different pattern that didn’t compete with the beautiful plaid.
- Anchoring the Sentiment. From the start, I knew where I wanted to place this banner, and I knew I wanted it to “float” in the middle of the card somewhere – I didn’t want it to tuck into a border on the card. Before I glued everything down, though, it looked a little strange. I needed something to anchor down the floating banner a bit – just writing those words makes my eyes cross, but I think you know what I mean. Anyway, I added two Chocolate Chip Candy Dots to the edge of the banner, and everything was, once again, peaceful in cardland.

Handsome! I love how the deer is so centered, I think making the layer beneath so much smaller than the card base is helping this look so darn handsome! Love the flag work and the adornment of Candy Dots!
Yes Brian, you get me every time with this handsome buck!! He looks very regal in the Sweater Weather DSP plaid, and cardland is not only peaceful, but also grateful!!
OH BABY! This is GORG!
That is one clever card! I love the deer and your sentiment is perfection! 🙂
Very clever – at first glance I thought you had been snipping again! Beautiful fall card – love it!
Such a proud buck ! Your touch of Houndstooth is very creative not to mention the central dsp on the deer . And how about those candy dots ? A great intro to Autumn !!!
Deer heads are a common sight here in Maine, but I much prefer yours! : )
I meant to say deer heads on the wall are a common sight…. : )
Fall is my favorite season and one of the reasons is the beautiful colors. This card really reflects the beauty of fall.
I love this technique, the image of the deer looks so perfect surrounded by that gorgeous DSP. This beautiful time of the year, the Fall, is my absolute favorite and this DSP reflect its amazing colors.
Great card Brian. That technique is amazing. Love the candy dots, like an exclamation to the sentiment. I must say . . . sorry . . . I didn’t like the placement of the deer on the plaid DSP. The two dark vertical stripes reminded me of something going through the deer’s head. I’m sorry, but I thought that. I love the idea of the card and the colors are very Fall, also my favorite time of year. (My birthday.) So, have a great day and thanks a bunch. 🙂
How right you are, the seasons change is fast approaching. You and I agree, fall is the most wonderful time of the year. With that in mind, your card is most fitting and I like it very much.
What a perfect stamp for emboss resist–SO love how you did this. And I’m extremely glad to know that all is right in cardland again….chaos in the fungeon could cause a glitter rebellion of some sort…
Lovely card! I looked at it a few minutes before scrolling down and figured out how you did it before reading it!! 😀 So proud of myself; I’m figuring out your techniques! Well, sometimes. I seriously want some clear embossing powder now (not much a fan of heat embossing – it makes about as much a mess as glitter in my mind). By the way – thanks for adding those two candy dots on the banner. It’s neat that it’s kind of a floating sentiment, but it did need something of an anchor. Great job!!!
Crafty, clever Brian strikes again! What a great idea to emboss resist over the plaid DSP, and what a wonderful effect. So happy to see you playing along with my challenge 🙂
Love it, Brian! As always, your designs are on the cutting edge! Thanks for playing with The Paper Players this week!
Fabby, trendy and oh so stinkin’ clever. Love the embossed image on the DSP and love that you used the deer to make a fall card. Great job, Brian! So glad you joined us this week!
