It’s the first week of October, and Christmas decorations and packaging and candy have already been stocked on store shelves for several weeks. In Atlanta, one of the local morning DJ’s has spearheaded a campaign to allow Halloween and Thanksgiving time in the spotlight before bringing in Christmas. Now, I don’t have anything against Christmas, but it does seem a little early to me. Well, today I am going to do the UNTHINKABLE. I am going to blow your mind by skipping right over Halloween and Thanksgiving and Christmas and New Year’s Day and Groundhog Day. I’m going straight to Valentine’s Day. Woo hoo! There’s a reason I’m sharing this now, but you’ll have to keep reading to find out.
Here’s my fun and totally dig-able project:
I got this idea from a Pinterest pin I saw a couple of months ago. The gift is a similar concept to the idea I saw on Pinterest, but the gift tag, in all its simplicity and beauty, is mine. I can’t link back to the original post because it’s from www.skinnymom.com, a membership-based site. You might not believe me when I tell you this, but I don’t subscribe to skinnymom.com (for I am neither skinny nor a mom). There you have it.
Tips, Tricks and Reminders:
- Layering the tag. The tag is created with two framlelits from the Chalk Talk Framelits and a layer of Whisper White that I rounded with a corner punch. The base layer is a perfect cutout if you want to wrap it around the gathered cello bag, but I wanted to only wrap it around the ribbon, so I don’t mind that the smaller framelit shape covers the hole a bit – in fact, I kinda’ like it.

- Tie it up. The gussetted bag is tied shut with a piece of Whisper White stitched grosgrain ribbon – I didn’t want to take away from the colors in the shovel and tag. After a knot around the bag, I tied in the shovel handle and then tied the bow. If you want to make sure the tag stays on the bag, you can add a dimensional to the back of the tag to secure it on the top.
- Why now, Brian? Why am I sharing this Valentine’s Day project now? I think it’s such a fun idea for a gift in February, BUT the beach pails and shovels are on sale NOW. The craft stores in Atlanta have stacks of these for cheap, cheap, cheap (which might be because Atlanta is landlocked, so the stores probably shouldn’t have stocked up on beach supplies – not to mention that beach supplies are unexpected in a craft store). Anyway, if you like this idea and want to send your child or grandchild to school with the coolest, “I dig you” Valentine’s gifts, this might be your only chance to get these shovels between now and then. A helpful tip AND a quick lesson in supply and demand. You’re welcome. 🙂

You are hilariously brilliant, Brian!
I feel the love Brian!!! Thank you for thinking of us & helping us plan ahead!!! 🙂 Enjoy the day with all your Pals!!
Oh, I totally dig this super fabulous gift set, Brian. Love your humor and wit when you write your posts every day, it’s great to smile and even giggle at 4:30 am. up here. I too feel that the Christmas decorations look out of place in late September because it’s mixed with the Halloween and Thanksgiving items, but it guess some folks like to get their decorating things ahead of time. I love this little shovel gift idea for my smaller grandkids Valentine’s Day gift giving, thank you for the fabulous inspiration.
PS. This little shovels are indeed very cheap right now up here.
Pretty funny read! I like the shovel accessory to the sentiment! Adorable!
AWESOME! As usual, you ROCK in supplying cute projects and tips!
Really, really cute idea Brian and the bright colors are absolutely fabulous.
The reason retailers put out the Christmas stuff so early is pretty simple really – Christmas Club checks are sent out the last week of September and they want to make sure they have plenty of incentive for people to shop once those checks are in their hands. Some folks (like me) do NOT want to go in a store after December 1st because of the crowds. Others (those smarter than me) wait until the last minute and get all the bargains but have to deal with the crowds to do so. There you have it. Now I’m off to the local craft store to look for shovels! LOLOL
you are so funny
Cute idea …. that`s a cute stamp set too. As far as the tag die and you covering the hole . I am not too giddy over that big gaping hole so i cut that part off my big tag die . I kept it in case I wanted to use it though at some time. Are those Paper White bulbs or pregnant Pistachioes (sp) ?
Ah Ha! I am one step ahead of you this time Mr. King (for once!)). As a teacher I look for sales all the time and (though I am not a “skinny” mom) I did come across this post on pinterest. (Hi, My name is Jeanie and I’m a pinoholic!) Valentine’s Day in Pre-K is always so much fun!!!!! Your tag is so cool and much nicer than any computer generated one!!! Thanks for sharing!
I laughed out loud in my hairdresser’s waiting room reading this… Not a skinny mom… Lol
Quite cute! Thanks for sharing. (Especially since I have not allowed myself to go to Pinterest!)
Thanks for the smile & the great idea–I wonder if they stock play shovels in Arizona???
Love this! From a not-so-skinny mom!
