CAS Masculine Birthday for the Paper Players

Before I share this week’s project for The Paper Players, I want to thank Ann Schach for selecting my Midnight Muse, Pool Party and Whisper White Hanukkah card as A Cut Above on the Paper Players last week.  I think my supply of pearls convinced her to choose my card.  🙂  Thanks, Ann!

I couldn’t have been happier when I saw that this week’s challenge from The Paper Players!  Not only is the challenge Clean and Simple [that’s totally up my alley], but it’s also a birthday card [who doesn’t love to celebrate birthdays?] for a man [yippee doodle dee!].  As you know, I have been on a mission to change the way we make cards for men.  They CAN have color and shapes and be beautiful.  Here’s my card:Four Your, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, PP168

And here’s the challenge badge from LeAnne Pugliese:Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • DSP, DSP, Done.  This card is primarily Designer Series Paper.  A quick and easy layout, this card can be reproduced with almost any DSP for almost any occasion.  I chose to use Quatrefancy Specialty Designer Series Paper, marking my first (that’s right, I said first) time I’ve used this gorgeous paper in a project.  I knew I wanted to incorporate two not-matched patterns.  Once I started cutting the Island Indigo page, I realized I could just cut a smaller piece from the same page and use the pattern on the opposite side.  That’s the complicated process by which I selected the Pumpkin Pie pattern to go with the Island Indigo one.  🙂
  • A simple, white border.  I really love the combination of colors and patterns on this card, but I think the thin white borders around the layers make those colors and patterns pop.  Without the white border, the colors and patterns would really fight with each other, and the Island Indigo paper would blend right into the Island Indigo card stock.  That simple, white border does a lot of work on this card.
  • Dimensions.  I don’t always share the dimensions of cards because I often snip away at the pieces to get the size I want.  These were cropped with simple measurements, so I want to share them with you:  Island Indigo background (8-1/2″ x 5-1/2″, scored at 4-1/4″), Island Indigo DSP (5″ x 3-3/4″), Pumpkin Pie DSP (3-3/4″ x 2-1/2″).  The white pieces are cropped at 1/8″ larger than each of the DSP pieces – simple line up your paper and then slide it 1/8″ longer.  Woo hoo!Four You, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, PP168

  1. So glad you chose this paper, Brian….I find it difficult to use these particular patterns, and you did an awesome job with them! Perfectly CAS and with those three little candy dots….well, I love my THREES!!! Thanks so much for making my challenge look so good!

  2. Love it ! These patterns really make this card but, like you said using the white as a border makes all of the difference . The colors are so good together . Great card ! And I am loving the newest SU offer . A great variety of good usable colors and so handy to have the bases ready to use without having to cut and score . This is a winner !

  3. Love this, Brian! You always make the simplest cards look so amazing. Great mix of patterns and colors.

  4. Great Masculine card, on it goes into my Masculine card file. Love the colors and the layout, which is always hard for me to do. The Candy Dots add a very subtle bling to the sentiment. Thank you for sharing.

  5. Love it! How do you finish the inside Brian? Can you show a pic please? Xo

    • I generally put a piece of Whisper White cardstock inside and sometimes stamp a light image that ties in with the design on the front – nothing fancy. On this card, I added birthday sentiment in Island Indigo and then signed the inside. I typically use my personal, handwritten sentiment as the “special” on the inside of the card. 🙂

  6. Quatrafancy, the paper that harkens back to my hippie-dippy childhood. Love the paper, love this card, TFS!!!

  7. Zip a Dee Do Da Day! Love this card Brian! I am so happy you are doing cards for the guys; no offense, but I think a lot of us girls struggle with that….but you have made another great card for us to share! Thanks my friend….

  8. Brian, beautiful card!! I struggle with cards for men, so I LOVE that you are taking that on. Another great man-card. Love your use of pattern and color. Wouldn’t have thought of that combo. You make my mind turn upside down and then say ‘Wow! that works!’.

Another great bday card for anyone celebrating any age!!! I love the colors & patterns you put together here Brian!!! 🙂
