The moment I saw the sketch for the Paper Players this week, I knew I’d make a Halloween card. I’ve yet to use the haunted house from the Best of Halloween set, so I had my eye on the prize. Then, I scanned through the inspiration cards and saw that Sandy Mathis used the image in her card. Screeching halt. Danger, Will Robinson! Abort mission! Abort mission! I took an immediate about-face and decided to make a Thanksgiving card. Here’s my card:
And here’s the Paper Players sketch by Anne Marie Hile that inspired my card:
Tips, Tricks and Reminders
- Color Selection. Last year, I had a long-standing love affair with Soft Suede. She was a part of nearly every card I made for quite some time, but things were moving a little to fast for both of us, so we parted ways for a short while. When I sat down to make this turkey card, I knew I needed her help. I flipped through my DSP swatch books and found this gorgeous page of Soft Suede and Very Vanilla paper in Venetian Romance DSP. It feels like a throwback to Thanksgiving in the ’70’s to me, and I liked it. I accented the Soft Suede and Very Vanilla with small pops of Tangerine Tango, a dark and rich shade of orange. A perfect combination.
- Banner Placement. I wanted to make sure the Tangerine Tango was only an accent to the warm Soft Suede. After I placed all my pieces down and positioned my banners at the base of the orange strip across the middle of the card, I realized the strip was too prominent – I was losing the warmth of the Autumn browns. Danger, Will Robinson! Abort mission! Abort mission! Am I starting to repeat myself? I decided to hang the banners off the top of the orange strip. I like how it looks like the three banners are hanging over the orange beam, but I really like how they remove a bit of the shocking orange from the middle of the card.
- Turkey Medallions. Who doesn’t love some yummy turkey medallions – topped with warm gravy and a light, fluffy dinner roll? I don’t remember why I named this bullet point the way I did. Oh! Now I do! I wanted to share how I built this beautiful turkey medallion. I stamped the image (from Harvest of Thanks) twice on Very Vanilla with soft Suede and once with Tangerine Tango. I cropped one of the Soft Suede images with the Deco Labels Collection Framelits and punched the turkey on the second stamped image with my 1-1/4″ Circle punch. I cropped the Tangerine Tango circle with a Circles Collection Framelit.

Hi Brian,
Amazing turned around about face. card! Very nice, indeed!
This was a better choice…I think!
lol. nice one 😉
I share your love of a good turkey medallion Brian!! 🙂 This card is perfectly balanced from the candy dots to the sentiment and the colors you chose are awesome together!!!
Very, very nice card this morning, Brian! Great interpretation of today’s sketch as well. The Soft Suede, Tangerine Tango, and Very Vanilla with the Venetian Romance DSP are the perfect combination – and there is that signature “white space” disguised as Very Vanilla that you are “famous” for! 😉 Love it, Brian. Grade for humor this Monday = A+
This Thanksgiving card is really great! Love the design and color combo. Usually people use the bright orange for T giving decorations but using the soft orage just sets the mood very nicely.
I too think you get an A+ overall!
Brian, part of the lure of your blog is your amazing wit and sense of humor. Sometimes I feel not quite ok and today, I had a good reason for feeling a bit blue…..for the football fans out there, the Cowboys lost to the Lions yesterday, snif, snif. (Sonny knows how bad I feel right about now). Anyway, I digress…..always, always, your posts put a smile on my face. You have a way to narrate the way you arrived at your designs and color combinations for your cards and that is always a fabulous tale. Your card today is really beautiful, warm and beautiful and I thank you for sharing it, along with your always upbeat sense of humor.
Thank you for the details of how you put this together. You always do that so well. The colors are warm and seasonal without looking “Ho-Hum”. I think your layering is what makes that turkey stand out so majestically. Too bad he is on the menu !
Beautiful card!! Warm cozy color combo!
Beautiful Thanksgiving card…well done!
This is a classic, Brian! Thanks so much for sharing it with us!!
She’s a beauty, Brian…the card is, oh and so is the turkey! Beautiful colors, perfect placement and gorgeous DSP. Love those banners.
The Venetion Romance paper works perfecty with the turkey stamp and your sentiment, love it! Perfect use of the Paper Player sketch, Brian.
Love this card and the colors! Thanks for giving us details, and some “art” theory, at least in my opinion, of how you come up with details in your card designs. LOVED “Will” comment, as a baby boomer I love that phrase, I think it’s also, Will Robinson!
THANK YOU, JOANN! I want to know how many people read this blog post (at least all the people who commented before you) and didn’t even question that I was using the wrong name in my “Lost in Space” reference. WIll Rogers and Will Robinson are completely different people. 🙂
LOL! I can see that robot on Lost in Space, waving his robot arms at you…and a wonderful about-face it was! LOVE this card, the colors are perfect for Thanksgiving. But it would have been okay to use that spooky house….we would have liked it too! Thanks for playing with the Players this week!
Brian, your posts always make me smile! You are too funny! What a fab Thanksgiving card, “turkey medallions” and all. Thank you so much for joining us this week at the Paper Players and for rocking my sketch! 🙂
Brian, I actually loved that you created a Thanksgiving card. It’s a great use of the sketch and I love the colors together.
So glad you joined the Paper Players this week
