I Lava You So Much & Some Great Promotions

It’s Wednesday – time to turn that frown upside down.  Today I am sharing a cute card I made last week and some new promotions that were announced yesterday morning.  I even have a sample to share with the project kit that was released yesterday.  This is a really great kit – don’t miss it!

One of my LEAST favorite stamp sets when the Annual Catalog was released was Crazy, Mixed-Up Love.  A blender, a lemon, a lava lamp, a light bulb, a bee and a coat hanger.  I think it was the image of little hearts in blender that turned me off – doesn’t seem really sweet, does it?  During the 25% Off 25 Stamp Sets promotion a couple of weeks ago, though, I ordered the set.  Now that I have the set in my crafty, little hands, consider my mind changed.  I can’t wait to make more projects with this adorable set.  Here’s my first card with this set:

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Background Design.  I shared this card with a demonstrator friend of mine, who asked what technique I used to make that background design.  You might already know this (you smarty pants), but the answer is simple!  It’s a page from Venetian Romance.  This design is presented twice in this pack:  once in Island Indigo and once in Tangerine Tango.  I wasn’t sure what to do with this paper until I started playing with the lava lamp.
  • Color Combination.  I didn’t go to the Color Coach for this color combination, but I’m sold on it.  It’s really very simple – this is simply a variation on the classic blue-and-red.  I knew I was working with the lava-like background in Island Indigo and wanted the hearts to be red.  Essentially, the colors were selected for me.
  • Balance.  None of the focal points on this card are centered.  The band of DSP is closer to the top of the card than the bottom.  The lamp is stamped on the top, right corner of the centerpiece, which is then placed toward the bottom of the card.  The stamp set comes with “i lava you” just beneath the lamp – I masked the sentiment when I stamped the lamp so that I could offset it a bit.  With the lamp in the top, left of the box, I anchored the sentiment in the bottom, right.  When the balance was still off a bit, I added three Candy Dots in the top, right.  This helped to balance color and weight.  Thank goodness for Candy Dots!

Stamp Sets: Crazy, Mixed-Up Love  Inks:  Real Red  Papers:  Real Red, Island Indigo, Very Vanilla, Venetian Romance  Accessories:  Bitty Banners Framelits, Candy Dots (Island Indigo), Word WIndow punch, Stampin’ Dimensionals

And here’s a completed project – this adorned the brown, leather satchel I received from Stampin’ Up! our first morning here.  How beautiful!  (and the snowflake ornament ain’t so bad either, huh?)20131112-221352.jpg

They also adorned the tables and our name tags at meals:

  2. I lava this card ! Cute ! And YAY for you at the Rising Star event . If you put your ear to the screen you will hear me clapping ! Can`t wait to hear all about it …..

  3. Love it! Have made our own marble paper in craft class using the re-inking SU bottles and shaving foam. Didn’t realise there was a dsp with this patten in – I like it 🙂

  4. Laurie Burns Gachewicz

Great card, perfectly balanced in that off-set kinda way!!! And congratulations on being a Rising Star Brian!!!!! I can hardly wait to hear more!!! 🙂

  5. Well, sometimes you have to see a stamp set used by someone with a fabulous imagination, like you Brian, to really appreciate the cuteness in it. Love the background, it goes together with that cute Lava Lamp perfectly.

  6. I have got to get the snowflake kit!!! I want to make them into ornaments. If I ever get to put up a Christmas tree again it’ll have to have non-breakable ornaments (cuz ya know… I have four cats!), and these beauties would be stunning on a tree! I bet “frosting” the tips with some shimmer sparkle embossing powder would look fantastic!

  7. Once again your creative eye picked up on something outside the box. Immediately I picked up on the lava floating background but not that is was the DSP. Brilliant! Not a fan of this set but thank you for taking a chance on it. I am sure you will come up with more “WOW” creations with it. Knowing you had a fabulous time in Utah for your Rising Star, can’t wait for your report. Welcome Back.

  8. Fab lava card…love the colors and all the hearts! And, the snowflake is gorgeous! Huge congrats on you being in Utah for the Rising Star event…yeah!:-) I’m off to order that snowflake kit…love it!

  9. Oh my Brian – a Rising Star retreat! I can’t possibly think of anything that would be more fun to attend than that and I can’t wait to hear all about it! WOW. Congratulations. It’s funny how different people have a different take on things. This great card reminded me of some of my childhood days while surrounded by Italians., “l Lava you” was heard all the time. LOL I know, that has nothing to do with the lava lamp but that is what it reminded me of. Too funny.

  10. Oh, oh, oh…I didn’t know what I was going to do with this stamp or that paper! You are a genius. Thanks for the ideas. I just love what you do. Wish I could have a Brian Brain transplant. How this brings back the psychedelic era of the late 60’s! Hated that, love the clean lines of this card. I Lava You Card! Nancy B

  11. Brian, I lava this card and think that you selected the perfect DSP for the lava themed card. Well done my friend.

  12. Congrats to you and all the Rising Stars!

  13. WHOO HOOT!! Rising star…yes you are! So happy for you. and as a person who really knows all about those little lava lamps (mine in my own teenage bedroom was pink of course)… this is an adorable, super fun card! Love the color combos, and who would have thought that the “Lava” would already be flowing on that DSP. Only you can take a peek at DSP and find something that no one else can. You rock! Have fun Mr. Rising Star. Hugs.
