Celebrate 2013: a New Year’s Eve Card

The end of the year is almost here.  Doesn’t it seem like we were ringing in 2013 just a couple of weeks ago?  To celebrate the start of the new year, I’ve created a fun and whimsical New Year’s Day card using some “old favorites” from the Annual Catalog and some “new classics” from the soon-to-be-released Occasions Catalog (Jan 3).  Woo hoo!

Here’s my card:

THE OLD FAVORITES

  • Seasonal Sayings.  The stamp set that shines on the center of this card includes Christmas, Thanksgiving and Halloween sentiments, but it also houses two great sentiments for the early part of the year:  “Celebrate” is perfect for New Year’s Eve and almost any celebratory event, and “Love You” is perfectly suited for Valentine’s Day.  If you don’t have it, this sentiment set is worth a second pass.
  • Embellished Events.  Another set from the Annual Catalog, the images in this set are wonderful for almost any event – baby, thank you, congratulations, anything.  The cute images in this set coordinate well with an array of Stampin’ Up! embellishments.

 THE NEW CLASSICS

  • Fancy Foil Designer Vellum (Gold).  The Occasions Catalog offers Fancy Foil Designer Vellum in two foil colors (gold and silver), and the designs include bold stripes, polka dots and hearts.  These vellum sheets are a perfect accent for almost any card or project.
  • Watercolor Wonder Designer Washi Tape.  I showcased two of the new designs in quick and easy ways – and you’d never know there was washi tape on this card if you weren’t looking for it.  I added the spotted tape on alternating stripes of the Vellum and bordered the sentiment with the striped washi tape.  I really like how the striped washi tape looks here.
  • Foil Sheets (Gold).  A returning favorite from the Holiday Catalog, the foil sheets are another great accent for cards.  The shininess really adds a wonderful “pow!” to projects.
  • Gold Sequin Trim.  While these tiny gold sequins come on a string to keep them all nicely attached (we don’t want sequins to pollute the Fungeon, do we?), I cut a few off and let them serve as the bubbles for the bubbly.

Did I reach Gold Overload?  While gold seems to be “in” right now, I am still more of a silver fan.  I tried to incorporate all sorts of gold products in this card – did I go too far, or did it just make the card more awesomer (that’s an “in” word right now)?

Stamp sets:  Seasonal Sayings, Embellished Events  Inks:  Jet Black StazOn  Papers:  Basic Black Core’dinations, Foil Sheets (gold), Whisper White, Basic Black, Fancy Foil Designer Vellum (gold)  Accessories:  Gold Stampin’ Emboss Powder, Gold Sequin Trim, Watercolor Wonder Designer Washi Tape, Neutrals Candy Dots (Basic Black), Stampin’ Dimensionals

  1. Cute…cute ….cute ! Your sequin bubbles are adorable and I have to order some of those Note Cards ! Happy Sunday !

  2. Your card is “awesomer”! The tiny sequins bubbles caught my attention right away. I too am a “silver person” but feel this new year’s card is perfect in gold. It’s not too much gold. I LOVE how you inserted the washi tape into the design every other white stripe. Very nice touch!!!

  3. It appears we caught the same wavelength, Brian! Love your gold accents! A Happy New Year to you, hugs…

  4. Very celebratory, Brian! Love your use of the “bubble” sequins!

  5. What a fun and festive card Brian, so perfect to celebrate the end of 2013 and receive the new 2014 with some delicious bubbly. Love the gold sequence “bubbles”, really it’s a super fabulous touch. Awesome indeed!!!!!

  6. Love your sequin bubbles! Great idea!

  7. Although I am not a fan of all the gold in the new catty, you pulled this off brilliantly!

All the gold takes me back to the 80’s Glamour Shot days. *Shudder*

  8. Hi Brian! I am new to your website but I have been loving your designs, and also your witty writing style. 🙂 I, too, am usually not a fan of gold, but you really pulled it off! I think what makes it work is the black, which really tones it down and grounds it. Beautiful, classy card for New Year’s!

  9. I think you hit it spot on. Awesomer, well you can make up any work you like to describe your creations. I think I’ll just use it sometime, it works for me. Although I usually don’t make new year cards, I may just case this one to send to a friend in Denver. She is a very classy lady and I know she would love this card, because this card is very classy.

  10. Oh Brian – I am so proud of you. You used sequins, and individual ones at that! I mean really, how many people would think of using them as bubbles? I am surprised and proud because I work with sequins all the time on costumes for the dance recitals and boy, they sure do make a mess! Next thing you know we’ll have you using glitter! LOL This card is beautiful, I love everything about it, the gold foil sheets, the gold sequins, the washi tape – heck, it’s all about bling and my friends call me the Queen of Bling so it’s a perfect match!

  11. I love how you used the washi tape!!

  12. Beautiful card Brian! I am not a fan of gold either (I was traumatized by too many brass fixtures in my house when I bought it… they were all quickly replaced with nickel) but your card is awesome. The sequins as bubbles are the perfect touch and I love the washi tape border around the sentiment panel. You’ve almost made me want to add these gold products to my next order. Great card, thanks for sharing and Happy Stampin’!

  13. A beautiful mix of old and new.
    Happy New Year!

  14. I am such a gold person! Your card is perfect. I love the use of the vellum, washi tape, and sequins with the black contrast. May you have a very happy & healthy 2014! Nancy B

  15. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this card. I think you made it more awesomer, for sure. 🙂

  16. I only have one thing to say…. ‘THE GOLD IS GORGEOUS”…. ’nuff said! 🙂

  17. Your card represents exactly what I think a New Year’s card should look like. Great job. I love everything about this card.

  18. Hi Brian,
Thanks for your nice comment regarding my PPA challenge card. Looks like we both had stripes on the brain.
Love your swatch books. Wish I had thought of them first! Great idea!!
