Oh, Happy Day – A Single-Layer Card for TCC6

I really enjoy the challenges from The Card Concept.  Not only are we challenged by the theme or color combination, but we are also challenged to define the layout type of our project.  This week, The Card Concept challenges us to make a birthday card – I’m in!  Here’s my card:

Starburst Sayings, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, TCC6, single-layer card

And here’s this week’s challenge banner from The Card Concept:

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Card Style Definition.  I’ve often struggled with defining a particular card style.  Is it Clean and Simple?  Is it Clean and Layered?  Is it Clean and Yet Oh, So Shabby?  The definition changes with each card.  This one, though, is a no-brainer.  Since there’s only one layer on this card (that’s right, it’s only one piece of card stock), I’d have to classify this one as Clean and Simple.
  • Layers on a Single-Layer Card.  Even I think this card looks layered.  So how’d I achieve this look?  I started with a very thin paper (I repurposed an old Stampin’ Up! packing slip) and cropped a large starburst.  I carefully placed the hollowed Starburst on a piece of Whisper White card stock and sponged it with Coastal Cabana ink.  Because I didn’t want to rip into the jagged point, I swiped from outside the circle into the circle with each swipe of ink.  Once I had the Coastal Cabana ink in nicely, I covered it with the cropped out starburst and covered the rest of the paper with Daffodil Delight, pulling from the copy paper starburst to the outside of the card.creating a single-layer card with Starburst Framelits, Stampin' Up!, Brian King
  • Color choices.  When layering ink over a single layer of cardstock, it’s important to have a second color dark enough to completely cover the first.  Jet Black StazOn was certainly equipped to do the trick.  What made this particular stamp image so perfect for this card, though, is all the negative space.  The words appear blue even though the stamp is inked in black – score!\

  2. First of all, thank you for the picture of your supplies used! Otherwise I would not have believed your card was really only one layer! So cheery! Thanks, Brian!

  3. You have created an optical allusion Brian! It really looks layered. Neat-o!

  4. Amazing. I can’t believe this is a single layer. When I read the challenge and then saw your card I actually thought I should call you to explain the concept of a single layer card. Silly me. I’m hanging my head in shame that I doubted your genius for even one second.

  5. Indeed it is! Oh Happy Day! For two reasons. First off, your fantastic take on a one layered card. The sponged coloring technique is wonderful. Great tip on using a packaging slip as your negative template. Just a super card. Secondly, Congrats for being picked the winner, or should I say King over at Dynamics Duos! Head on over everyone and check out Brian’s winning card.

  6. I really kept looking and looking and looking at that card thinking “no way is that one layer” so I agree with Pam and Kelly for sure. I’m not sure how you came up with that concept but boy, it certainly fooled me Brian. Keeping every single point had to be quite the challenge as they all are perfect. WOW!

  7. Great card Brian, the single layer ones are my favorite, you sure are creative, keep ”em
Coming. I wonder what kind of party your brain is having with so many creative juices!

  8. Voila! Super duper uber cool! Love the look of layers, but with only one. The colors are so bright and cheerful too! Way to go! 🙂

  9. This card really gives you the illusion of layers, the colors you picked are perfect for that effect. Great job sticking to the challenge of the Card Concept.

  10. Nice job, Brian! Great card!!!!

  11. Just HOW do you think of these cool ideas! : )

  12. Nice job with the masking! I really thought the card was made with multiple layers 🙂

  13. That is a lot of sponging! You did pick the perfect image to create your one layer magic- I love the blue showing through, Brian. As far as card type goes, this could be considered clean and graphic! 😉
