The Point is…

One of the “surprise hits” of the Occasions Catalog is Spiral Spins, a little stamp set featured near the back of the catalog.  While I immediately thought “Spirograph” the moment I saw it, I wasn’t really sold on the set.  The first couple of customer orders from the new catalog, though, included this set.  I though, “there must me something more there,” so I added it to my very next order.

Ever since, my “Spirograph” stamp set has made the trip from the stamp shelf to my desk and back several times but never once got inked up.  I decided it was time to change all that.  Combining it with one of the Occasions Catalog Hostess Sets, Making a Point, I created this card:

Spiral Spins, Making a Point, Stampin' Up!, Brian King

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Balancing Color with Size.  The color selection for this card was inspired by Kaleidoscope Designer Series Paper.  Instead of Strawberry Slush, though, I used Melon Mambo.  These three colors work really well together for a colorful, balanced card.  With all of its “bite,” Crushed Curry is the palest of these three shades, so I used it on the smallest shape to “fill in the cracks” left from the larger, brighter colors.  Although I stamped these circles at an angle across the page, I was able to achieve visual balance with the combination of shapes and colors.
  • Bold Pencil.  I was really excited with I made the connection between the image in the Spiral Spins set and the pencil in Making a Point.  It just makes sense, right?  When I stamped the pencils, though, on Whisper White, they weren’t bold enough to stand out against the patterns and white paper.  I turned to my trusty friend, White Stampin’ Emboss Powder, so I could get a bold pencil.  Just what I needed.  Thank you, Stampin’ Emboss Powder, for making anything possible.
  • Punches.  The materials list for this card shares that I used the Modern Label punch  on this card.  Do you see it?  It’s a bit hidden because I cut off the right side and banner-tipped the left side.  See how the Melon Mambo banner has a scoop in the middle?  That’s it!  That’s the Modern Label punch.

  1. This is a different stamp set . You have to put some thought into how you want to use it . Mission accomplished ….I think this made a great card and the pencil made the point !

  2. I love the Spirograph, my daughters own one back when they were little and now, my grandkids have one too. This card brought fun memories of those days when I used to actually play with this fabulous toy when the girls were in school. Love your card Brian, the colors look so amazing together, and you are right, that pencil did make the point.

  3. Beautiful. Your stamping ALWAYS looks like DSP! Love the layout, colors and balance. 🙂

  4. Great card, Brian! I, too, have fond Spirograph/daughter memories, Maria! The Bermuda Bay pencil with its white embossing along with the redesigned Modern Label punched sentiment piece are perfect with the Spirograph-stamped images!

    • Awesome Suzie, that is one fabulous toy that actually needs no batteries, it’s not a video game, it helps with eye/hand coordination, it’s not ridiculously expensive, it’s loads of fun, it’s good for kids of any age, (that’s us!!! LOL!!), and to play, all you need is paper and pretty colored pens. Hurray for the non electronic toys!!!!!

  5. Great card and concept. I loved my Spirograph.

  6. So clever using the pencil in the design! Love it!

  7. Love the color combo! Perfect pairing! I loved my Spirograph too – it first came out in 1966 and I’m sure I got mine for Christmas that year. I never forgave my dog for chewing up my favorite wheel. Lol!

  8. I love it as it brings back memories of another happy time! I spent hours using my Spirograph! Your card is just awesome Brian and the pencil . . . well it really does make a point!! It really helps taking you back in time to a toy/game that was fun and simple!

  9. Wow, nostalgia is reigning king with this card! Way to repurpose the Modern Label punch, B. And the pencil…..love that pencil!

  10. Hi Brian:
I have used the spiral stamp set A LOT. I’ve used it to make flowers and even photo frames. When I send my photos out to be printed I always receive a “proof” page with copies of the photos that are really tiny. I used one of my circle punches and one of the spirals to make photo pictures which I then mount in those tiny frames made from gold plastic that are so inexpensive at Michael’s or A.C. Moore and they make fabulous tree ornaments. I think Spiral Spins has become one of my favorite stamp sets ever. It’s a lot more versatile than one would think at first glance. Love your card, especially the color combo you chose.

  11. I never gave this stamp set a second look. Guess I need to rethink that! I love what you did with it! Never doubt the KING!

  12. I might just have to get my Spirograph out and play. I know my parents still have all my old games. Such fun just your car today!

  13. Oh how this brings back memories! Love the card as always!

  14. i used to be so enamored by the concept of the spirograph, and so frustrated when it would misalign or the teeth would skip, wrecking my design. if i bought this set, i would never be able to have this complaint! i really like this color combo, and your clever use of the word window punch.

  15. Set never impressed me…. Now I LOVE IT!!! Love this color combo and the pencil…. oh I feel like I’m a kid again.
