Pals Blog Hop: Having Fun with Japanese Comic Books for Earth Day

2014aprhop_badgeWelcome to the Pals Blog Hop for April.  To celebrate Earth Day, this month we are showcasing projects that feature recycled, re-purposed, or earthy/recycling themed elements.

You may just be starting the blog hop or may have come from #22 on the Pals Hop, Kerry Willard Bray at Peonies and Paper Chains.  If you get off track at any time, the full lineup below will help you move along from blog to blog so you see all of the amazing creations.

Having Fun with Japanese Comic Books

Serina and Chris went on an amazing vacation to Japan last Fall.  Whey they returned to Atlanta, they brought me a box of tea and a stack of some really cool Japanese comics.  The tea went quickly, but the comics have stayed in my craft room, waiting for “that right moment.”

Japanese Comic Book ArtThe paper is rough and thick, and it struck me right away that the ink used to create these pages is Wisteria Wonder.  The Japanese really get it!  🙂  I have no idea what’s going on in these comics, but there’s a little surprise on every page.  I’ve kept these pages for months, looking at them every once in a while to see how I might use them.  An Earth Day celebration is as good a day as any, huh?  Here’s a card I made with the comics:

Just Sayin', Stampin' Up!, Brian King

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Borders on Hilarious.  The moment I saw this laughing face, I knew I had to use it somehow.  What a better way than to incorporate a “snarky” birthday greeting?  The frame of this card is a thin border of wisteria Wonder, followed by a thick border of Very Vanilla and a thin border or Cherry Cobbler.  I like to mix up my frames – it adds interest.
  • Color Combination.  I think Cherry Cobbler looks good with anything.  The warmth of Cherry Cobbler pairs particularly well with soft colors like Pool Party and Wisteria Wonder.  I incorporated the Very Vanilla border around the card so that the sentiment (bordered with Very Vanilla) wouldn’t stand out quite so much.
  • Two pieces.  The laughing girl is on a separate page from the background images.  I cropped her out (she came with a thick Wisteria Wonder border around her), bordered her with Cherry Cobbler and then glued her down on another page from the books.  The large image pairs well with the smaller images in the background.  She really stands out.

I didn’t stop there, though!  I completed two more projects with these comics, and I’m sharing them here tomorrow.  One is a sympathy card, and one is a gift packaging idea.  I hope you’ll come back tomorrow to check them out!

  7. Very interesting and different. If anyone could figure out what to do with the comics it would be you. You did a good job. To me the characters don’t look much like Japanese. Anxious to see the next few cards.

  8. Well, leave it to you Brian, to make something this awesome with comic book pages, this card is beyond fabulous. The color of this images is definitely Wisteria Wonder, love how you really highlighted the super cool sentiment in bright red but, the snipped image of this girl is the best part of this card, she really takes center stage!!!!!
I can’t wait to see what you did with other pages, specially the Sympathy card, I can’t imagine how you did it, all I know is that it would be fantastic.
You have an amazing BRAIN, BRIAN!!!!!
