I love the simplicity of this week’s Freshly Made Sketches layout. One shape, one sentiment, one curvy background piece. And…GO! Knowing I’d be sitting down to make this challenge card after work last night, I started running through stamp sets I have never used and immediately settled on the phonograph from Timeless Talk. Oh! And I figured this would be a good time to honor the soon-to-retire 2012-2014 In Colors. Here’s my card:
And here’s Jen Brum’s sketch that inspired my card:
Tips, Tricks and Reminders
- Flip it! As soon as I sat down to make this card, I knew that the phonograph would be shooting ribbons and a word onto the right hand of the card – right where the sentiment is positioned on the sketch. Good designing, Brian! The phonograph, however, opens up on the left, so I flipped the sketch upside down and rounded my corners on the bottom. Easy enough fix.
- In Colors. With the Retired List coming out on Monday, few things are known about what will and will not be in the upcoming catalog. One thing is for sure – five colors will no longer be In Colors: Midnight Muse, Summer Starfruit, Primrose Petals, Raspberry Ripple, and Gumball Green. Today’s card honors these five amazing colors that feel like family. They might not be gone forever, but my guess is we won’t be seeing them next year.
- Keep it Clean. Yipes! There’s a lot of white space on this card. There’s an image, some ribbon and a sentiment. That’s it. The background shape adds some intrigue, but there’s really not much else going on. It’s all good, though. The white space allows your eyes to rest on the image, the sentiment and the explosion of ribbon.

Monday is the Day! Monday is the announcement of this year’s Retired Products List. Stampin’ Up! has always sold accessories “while supplies last” and stamp sets through the end of the catalog term. Well, this year they’ve announced that BOTH will be sold “while supplies last.” Monday might be your last chance to get some of the great items before they are gone forever.
What a great idea to have the ribbon blasting the thank you sentiment out from the phonograph. Love it.
This card blew me away–the colors, the simplicity but most all, the clever use of ribbon. To DIE for.
I love it. Very clever….which means I will be casing it. I’ll be sure to give credit to “that person whose name I forget”. Lol
What a great two year run these colors have had. You did them proud with your card today. They will be missed. Can’t wait to see the new incoming colors.
I love, love that phonograph!!! and the clever way you used the ribbon to make the “sound”!! By double matting the image you eliminated most of the white space in the design, what’s left looks great, allowing your eyes to take in that awesome phonograph with it’s colorful “sound waves”.
Thank you for sharing.
Good color combination and don’t you love that fussy cutting!
What a super fun card!!! : )
Sooooo cute!
Your talent is absolutely amazing! You should be the person designing the cards for Stampin Up’s catalogs. Your creativity is beyond words. Thank you for sharing your ideas with everyone.
This card just couldn’t be any more fun, Brian! Love it!
You sure wield a mean scissor!! Love the little sound explosion, such a cute idea.
I love this satiny ribbon and hate to see it go away ….but, I will always remember it`s last gasp bursting forth as sound from a phonograph . If we could hear it I wonder what it is playing ? You are just the cleverest one ! Who in this world would have thought that up ? Just think this stamp set may be leaving us also ! I never bought it …you just can`t buy them all (I try ) Happy Friday
Love it! What a great use of this stamp set which I have and will now use!!!

Fun and creative use of that phonograph image, love it!
Hey! This came to mind….. along the rim that is on the “inside”, cut a slit, put the ribbon in there. to make it look REALLY like it’s coming from the megaphone.
Too funny – you are so clever! I laughed so hard when I saw your “sound waves” coming from the phonograph! You have an awesome sense of humor, just hilarious! Thanks for trumpeting a reminder to get the in colors while we can.
Fabulous card Brian! I love those colours and the ribbon coming out of the phonograph is perfect! Thanks for joining us this week at Freshly Made Sketches!
