Bravo for Freshly Made Sketches & a Sneak Peek

Jen Mitchell is hosting this week’s challenge over at Freshly Made Sketches, and she has created a super-simple and wonderfully challenging sketch.  Simple and challenging?  Sometimes the most straightforward ideas are the most complicated to execute.  It’s just the way of the world, folks.  🙂

Today’s card features a sentiment from Bravo, a wonderful photopolymer stamp set in the 2014-2015 Annual Catalog.  Here’s my card for this week’s sketch challenge:

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Playing with Colors.  The colors on this card are Lost Lagoon, Blackberry Bliss and Summer Starfruit (and a tiny bit of Tangelo Twist).  With all the new In Colors, why did Hello Honey get the shaft?  The story isn’t that harsh.  🙂  When I conceptualized this card, the background was filled with the Summer Starfruit piece of High Tide Designer Series Paper (the one with the tiny, white stars in the background).  I happily created my stripes with those colors to coordinate with the DSP.   In the end, the DSP was too busy with the stripes, so out went the Starfruit, and in came the Whisper White!  Summer Starfruit had already wiggled its way in.  Sorry, Hello Honey.
  • Creating a Striped Banner.  I filled a piece of cropped Whisper White card stock with a 2-Way Glue Pen.  I placed the strips of card stock over the gluey paper and then trimmed around the edges.  The Lost Lagoon and Summer Starfruit pieces are 3/4″, which the Blackberry Bliss strips are 1/4″.  In the end, these strips look quite dapper together, don’t you think?
  • Isn’t that Odd?  You might not be able to see this from the photo, but the dimensions of this card are quite odd.  The face of the card is 6″ tall and 4″ wide.  Why did I pick that size?  The answer is simple: because I can.  The Envelope Punch Board allows us to make cards in almost any shape because we can make an envelope to go with it.  🙂  Our imagination is less restricted when we can make cards in any shape.  Yippee!

  1. Lovely card! Can’t wait to get my hands on that new stamp set. Looking at your blog is such a highlight of my day, thank you so much for sharing your talent. I eagerly await 7 pm each night when your blog updates (Brisbane, Australia).

  2. Awesome looking card.

  3. A very nice looking card. I love the stripes, you do excellent work with them! And Summer Starfruit is one of my favorite colors. Thanks for sharing!

  4. I simply love your striped panel/banner. The color combo is wonderful. I have my eye on the Bravo set, really like it. I like to see different sizes of cards. I don’t make them. Guess I should try sometime. My envelope punch board doesn’t get as much action as it should. Thanks for reminding me.

  5. I think this is a great card for graduation ! I like my EPB (Envelope Punch Board ) too. I use the corner rounder and I make bows with it . And most of all I think your “Kick The Tires ” comment about the Swatch Books is GREAT !
    Happy Sunday !

  6. Hi Brian. The striped pattern is really cool. To think you did that with card stock and not DSP is awesome. Tell Hello Honey that you have a great card just waiting for her exclusively, it’s a solo! Maybe she won’t feel so left out. :-).

  7. I love gluey and odd and you do it so well! Great card.

  8. Good Morning Brian:

I cannot believe your ability to make your own paper background which looks like it has to be a designer paper. When I looked at the card before reading the description, I grabbed the catalog and tried to find which designer paper it was. Needless to say, frustration set in when I couldn’t find it so – like most hubby’s when something needs to be assembled – finally decided to read the “directions”. LOL You did an amazing job. This card is just fabulous and I love the fact that you took a horizontal design, made it vertical and got the perfect result.

  9. I Love these colors together. Great card! The Bravo stamp set is on my top wish list!

  10. I’m really growing to love the new “In Colors” the more you use them – your creativity is so inspiring. Can’t wait to get my own set of the colors. I was wondering if you would be able to add the photo of the products you use in each project at the end of your post. I also subscribe to Justin Krieger’s blog (jk cards-I’m sure you know it…) and he does this. I find being able to see a photo of the product, especially what other stamps are in a set, helps me decide if I’d want to own it. The link right to the product on the SU website is cool too. …just a thought

  11. Love, love, love how you got the striped paper! Way cool!
