Shaking Things Up for the Friday Mashup

I’m so excited to share today’s project – I created this card this past weekend and wanted to post it as soon as it was done, but I had to wait until today.  I’ve wanted to make a “shaker card” for some time but never have.  Shaker cards have a clear front and are filled with something fun (like glitter…argh) that can be shaken to create movement inside.

When the Friday Mashup team suggested a “hello card” that uses sequins, I thought that was the perfect opportunity to make a shaker.  Today, I’m going to share the card.  Tomorrow, I’ll share the steps I took to make it.  For now, here’s my card:

#Hello, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, FM166

And here’s the challenge banner for the Friday Mashup that inspired my card (this week’s project is a mashup of a “hello” card with sequins):

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Color Combination.  This sweet color combination of Calypso Coral, Crisp Cantaloupe and kraft first hit me upside the head when I had three random pieces of card stock sitting on my craft table together.  At the time, it was Calypso Coral, Crisp Cantaloupe and Baked Brown Sugar, but kraft is as close as it gets.  The little touches of Whisper White make the pinks and browns crisp and delicious.
  • What’s New?  There are several new products used in this project.  For starters, I love the new #hello stamp set – so modern, so fun.  I used the new Calypso Coral Stampin’ Emboss Powder to emboss this image on Whisper White (the image is a negative image) and punched it with the new 2″ Circle punch.  The shaker is filled with the new 2013-2015 In Color Sequins.  All of this is mounted on and coordinated with the new Kraft Cardstock.
  • Shake it, Shake it Real Good.  Who wouldn’t love to receive this shaker card in the mail?  All the sequins are secured inside and just peek out from behind the sentiment.  I know it’s a square – this one is 4-1/2″ x 4-1/2″.  I made a matching envelope with the Crisp Cantaloupe Designer Series Paper Stack but will mail it in a rectangle padded envelope (to prevent it from getting squished in the mail).

  1. Love, love, love this colour combination! All of these products are on my ‘need’ list, and I can now order them, as of today. Yipppeee! Thanks again for awesome inspiration Brian.

  2. When I started reading that you made a shaker card I thought “no he didn’t” assuming that you filled it with GLITTER! The sequins is a great substitute for those who are glitter phobic such as yourself. :-). I am in love with this layout! Super card Brian!

  3. I love shaker cards and yours is outstanding. Everything from your color choice to the sequins make for a beautiful card. Awesome job

  4. Shaker cards look fun….I’ll check back for the steps to make it!

  5. Such a cute and fun card. Glad to hear there were no ‘glitter’ injuries incurred while making this card. Can’t wait to see how “THE KING” put this all together. I’ve made them before but I can guess you probably have your own twist as usual. Oh yes, you mentioned mailing this out in the padded envelope, might I be the lucky receipent? One could only wish. 🙂

  6. Like the colors and Shaker cards are so neat . I think the white does sharpen the colors . Thank you for pointing that out with using Kraft and mixed colors . The main thing that I like about this card is those beautiful In Color sequins > I just received mine and they are so so pretty . Watch out Swappers , you may end up with a card front covered in these sequins (if I decide to let them go ) . I like your cute card !

  7. Yeah for sequins!! Aren’t they fun Brian?! LOL! I know how you love them! Great card, love the colors! 🙂

  8. This card is striking! I love the color combo. I recognized the craft box top immediately and wondered what paper matched it. I missed the kraft paper…how did that happen in my hundred perusals through the catalog? LOL Can’t wait for your directions.

  9. I love your card, the colors are very pretty and the lay out is great but the icing on the cake has to be the sequins. I love the in color sequins!!! Awesome card…thanks for sharing.

  10. Hi Brian:

I need to go back to the catalog and find the Decorative Window Gift Boxes as I must have missed them. You are right in that the white image on the Kraft paper really highlights this card. The colors are soft and the bright white makes a super contrast to draw ones eye. It’s a great card but if I knew you were out of glitter to fill it I would have been glad to send you some of mine. Next time, just ask. LOL

  11. You sure know how to shake things up Brian! : )

  12. Sequins are way better than glitter! Great choice for a shaker card. Thanks for joining the Friday Mashup this week.

  13. Yay! Shakers! I heart shakers. Loving that color combination too. Cute.

  14. You are just so “krafty”, Brian. Love how you used the kraft card stock (which I missed in the new catalog), the kraft gift box, and the sequins to make this AWESOME shaker card!

  15. Hooray for Shaker cards! I have always wanted to try to make one, and leave it to you Mr. King, to help me! This card is super duper great! The colors are perfect and even though you did tease us with the glitter comment (I thought “he used glitter”???) the sequins are a perfect substitute. Can’t wait to see how you did this. TFS

  16. Love it!!! I have been wanting to make a shaker card myself so now I have yours for inspiration! Thanks so much for sharing!!

  17. LOL I LOVE!!!! Shaker cards, haven’t made one in a while. I use glitter in mine, and I thought for a second……. No you wouldn’t. Love the sequins. Very cute card

  18. OMGosh, Brian- this is fabulous:) TFS your talent with everyone day after day!

  19. Thank you Brian for sharing this card with us. It is fabulous ! It is almost magical. . . I also love the color combination.

  20. Wonderful hello card, such a great idea to incorporate sequins by making a shaker card. The pop of white really grabs my eye, love it!
