A Sweet Journal for Freshly Made Sketches and Simple Saturday

In my first order from the new catalog, I picked up several packs of Kraft Grid Journals.  These little books measure about 3-1/2″ x 5-1/2″ and are made of 64 pages of grid paper.  The books are perfect for making a grocery list, jotting down phone numbers or keeping track of household chores.  I’ve thought about these books almost every day since I ordered them but never even opened them until today.

This week’s Freshly Made Sketches layout is perfect for the book cover I had in mind.  The project also qualifies for a Simple Saturday project.  Woo hoo!  Here’s my sweet, little book:Ray of Sunshine, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, FMS143

And here’s the Freshly Made Sketches banner for this week’s sketch challenge:

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Creating a Cover.  The background base for the cover of this journal is super-simple.  I cropped a 3-1/4″ x 5-1/4″ piece of Baked Brown Sugar Designer Series Paper stack paper and punched the two right corners with the Project Life Corner Rounder.  I chose a color that coordinates with the kraft journal cover so that the sentiment would grab your attention straight-away.
  • Gift Giving.  We often times look for ways to share our paper crafting hobby with others.  We can make lots of fun cards, but don’t pass over these journals without considering what a great gift they can make!  Who wouldn’t love to receive a couple of these for their day-to-day notes?  One in a purse, one in a diaper bag.  I’d certainly toss  a couple of these in my briefcase.  Oh!  And this sentiment is a perfectly uplifting reminder to stay positive during your daily adventures.  🙂
  • Placeholder.  If you are using this book to jot notes, why would you want to flip and flip and flip to get to the page you wrote on last?  I added a 6″ piece of Baked Brown Sugar Thick Baker’s Twine – it’s just set inside the journal and makes a nice, coordinating effect.

Stamp sets:  Ray of Sunshine  Papers:  Crushed Curry, Baked Brown Sugar, Whisper White, 2013-2015 In Color Designer Series Paper Stack (Baked Brown Sugar)  Inks:  Baked Brown Sugar  Accessories:  Kraft Grid Journal, 2-1/2″ Circle punch, Starburst Framelits, Project Life Corner Rounder, Baked Brown Sugar Thick Baker’s Twine, Hexagon punch (to crop the banner tips)

  1. Okay, something else to add to my list, Kraft Grid Journal! And don’t you love the PL corner rounder!

  2. Hi Brian, this so true on many points. Just thinking I made a set of thank you cards for a gift. One of these would have been great. How about a little envelope, with the top flap cut off, or sleeve to go with it? I adore the twine marker too. I’ll be checking these out right now. 🙂

  3. Okay…now you`ve done it ! You know how card makers love office supplies (thought I was the only one for years) I have been waiting for someone to show one of these cuties . Love love the twine marker idea !

  4. “Pin” worthy, for sure!

So cute, and yes, the bakers twine idea is great! Will be sharing this idea with friends!
    Happy Saturday!

  6. Oh Brian:

The saying on this stamp for your wonderful little journal is screaming Brian at me. You are always such a ray of sunshine.

I love the restful look created by the Crushed Curry, Baked Brown Sugar and Whisper White combination. I hadn’t even noticed these in the catalog but I’m going back and look to check them out. These “journals” would be the perfect little hostess gift to thank someone for their dinner invitation, being a special friend, or even just a “when you use this journal think of me” gift. I really do love the one you made and, of course, adding the piece of baker’s twine to use as a book mark is the icing on the cake. Thanks for all you do for us Brian and please know that you make sunshine for your followers every day.

  7. Yep… I love the journals also, and I really like how you dressed yours up

  8. Fun idea to use the sketch for a journal! I still have some of the old style journals I never decorated. Sigh. So many supplies, so little time… 😉 Anyway, love the colors and love that sentiment. Thanks for joining us this week.

  9. What a fun way to decorate the journal. So bright and cheerful! Thanks so much for joining us at Freshly Made Sketches.

  10. What a darling project, great job Brian
