Thanks, Thanks, Thanks for PMDC-049

I arrived home late yesterday from a wonderful trip to Madison, Alabama (near Huntsville) for the July 4th Holiday – I had a wonderful weekend with several of my friends I met through stamping (September Gray, Jennifer Spiller and Katie Ferguson).  After arriving home, I took a quick nap and then got to work on today’s project.  Woo hoo!  For inspiration, I looked to Nicole Watt’s Pixel Maven Digital Challenge.  Nicole, a fellow Pal and PPA Design Team member, is also a friend  met through stamping.  I do love this craft!

Here’s my card:

Groovy Love, Lots of Thanks, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, PMDC-049

  • Embossing Light-on-Dark.  You already know how much I love to use embossing powder, right?  While embossing powders can certainly give you a glossy, shiny, solid image (woo hoo!), embossing powders also allow you to create a light-colored image on a darker paper.  I reached into my embossing powder stash to create tiger-striped hearts in Blushing Bride, White and Pool Party on Baked Brown Sugar paper.  I could have never accomplished that look with just inks and paper.  I don’t like to say “never” but…never.
  • Masking a Sentiment.  There are several ways to mask a stamp so that you only ink up a portion of the image.  I used a post-it note to mask a large image last week (see that post here), but to separate this tiny sentiment from Lots of Thanks, I added a piece of tape (sticky side down) to the part I did not want.  I inked up the image, removed the tape and then stamped.  Two helpful hints:
        • Clean the stamp.  Make sure the stamp is super-clean.  Who wants to go to all the trouble of masking a piece to only end up with a faint image of the masked portion of the stamp?
        • Tuck it in.  Since this sentiment was so small, I had to “tuck in” the tape along the base of the sentiment.  I carefully (and very gently) used the side of my paper-piercing tool to make sure everything was properly covered up.Tips for masking a sentiment, Stampin' Up!, Brian King
  • Groovy Love with a Groovy Line of Hearts.  I really love the shape of the new Sweetheart punch and all the coordinating stamps in Groovy Love.  I was excited to use this zebra-print heart – until I learned it was a tiger-print heart.  🙂  I originally wanted these hearts in a single, straight line across the center of this card.  At last minute, I decided to create them in a diagonal.  I like how the hearts fill the white space a little bit.

I especially love knowing that someone younger than me needs an occasional nap…! (Sorry for all the ‘loves’-it was my wedding anniversary on your Independence Day and I’m still feeling the love!!)

  7. Absolutely fabulous card Brian. The diagonal lineup of the hearts is so creative, fun and effective. I can see this design with a gazillion different images in the same lineup. Very inspirational to say the least.

So glad you got a weekend away. We all need that little “break” in routine to keep us motivated for sure. I’m positive the gals were thrilled to have you with them for an entire weekend, it must have been lots of fun.

  8. You’ll have to come north to Maine sometime Brian! 🙂

  9. I really like this card and will have to do what you do and follow a sketch. I will also have to buy more embossing powders as yesterday while crafting I just could not find what I needed.

  10. I have a lot of heart type things (punches, stamps, etc.) because like Loz I also like hearts . BUT…I have to get the new “chubby” heart stuff.
