I Remembered Your Birthday for PPA212

I took some liberties with this week’s Pals Paper Arts sketch challenge.  PPA212 presents us with a strip and three shapes.  Rather than to create my three shapes as pronounced on the card, I created them as part of the background.  Sneaky, huh?  Here’s my card:

Age Awareness, Mosaic Madness, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, PPA212

And here’s the sketch for this week’s challenge:PPA212Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Pattern Repetition.  Did you notice that both stamps have a similar pattern?  Both Age Awareness and Mosaic Madness have filled-in spaces with thin, vertical lines. Once I noticed this, I knew I’d want to combine these images on a card.  This sketch challenge was the perfect opportunity for me to combine them.
  • The order of Things.  There’s not just one way to do things, but I’m happy to share my process for stamping this image.  When balancing a set of three items, I generally add the left and right items and balance the middle item between the two.  Because I was also incorporating the sentiment from Age Awareness, I started with the center shape from Mosaic Madness and then stamped the large sentiment, followed by the remaining Mosaic Madness shapes and finally the smaller sentiment.
  • The Importance of Frames.  The frame around your project can be just as important as what’s inside.  For this project, I extended the Whisper White base of the central card piece into the border beneath.  The card would take on a completely different look if I had left this layer out or if I had, instead, used a patterned paper or darker paper.

  1. Wish I had this card last night ! I was asked if I could do a quick birthday card that wasn`t too fancy or themed. My creation was not an award winner ! This would have been perfect . I like the font on this greeting a bunch … A great card !

  2. A great ‘sneaky’ Brian. Very clever and unique.
    Definitely will do this style.

  3. Very cool variation of this sketch. But not as cool as seeing you here at convention. :-).

  4. Very sneaky, but very cool! Love the broken panels too! Thanks for joining us this week.

  5. Very interesting “take” on the latest Paper Pals Arts sketch! This morning I actually opened the PPA sketch email before I opened yours, Brian! I got the chance to look at the sketch and the examples by the resident artists first. I’ll probably go back, again, now that I’ve had the chance to soak in your design. The fact that yours is made up of layers of card stock with all focal images being stamped stands out from the others. And you chose card stock over ribbon. (My computer decided to have another Sleep Wake malfunction this morning, so I’m having to use my phone to look closely at all these cards. Will have to return once my computer decides to wake up for closer scrutiny.) Anyway, the way you used the stamp sets – well, I would have never stamped on top of another image like that – but it looks great! Thanks, Brian, again, for thinking outside the box! Know you are enjoying convention!

  6. Hi Brian:

I think this card is absolutely striking. The word birthday from the Age Awareness set is beautiful all on it’s own but when incorporated with the image from Mosaic Madness it is quite striking. The color Night of Navy when offset with Coastal Cabana is appropriate for anyone. Absolutely loved this card. Have a wonderful time at Convention and you can fill us all in when you get home and have a chance to recoup from all the fun.

  7. Great combination of stamp sets, Brian!

  8. Very neat take on the sketch. And I had not noticed those lines were matching, hooray for that info! Happy Convention!

  9. Shannon Hokanson

It was so great to meet you in person. The Pals are even more amazing face to face.

  10. Outstanding Brian! So simple, but so effective. I would never have thought to use that stamp set for accent like that.

  11. Your creativity consistently inspires me! Thanks for sharing!!

  12. A very handsome card, Brian. Classic and clean. A very creative way to incorporate the design. I’m inspired to try one using this layout and combining stamps. Thank-you!

  13. You are just one “sneaky guy” – Great card (as always) – I just love how you think out of the box! Perhaps one day can squeeze in the box to get some ideas!!!! Hugs!

  14. No, I didn’t notice that Mosaic Madness and the new Birthday set have the same pattern! I love what you did with the sketch, and how you combined these two stamp sets. Great card, Brian!
