The Friday Mashup gives us two challenges this week (a technique and a sketch) – and I’ve really mashed things up by accepting both challenges. Woo hoo! Before I share the technique and sketch, I am excited to share my project. Here it is:
The inspiration for today’s card comes from a (1) a technique (creating a Delft tile background) and (2) this sketch by Tara Bourgoin:
Tips, Tricks and Reminders
- Creating Tile. Delft Tile refers to the beautiful blue and white Dutch tiles. So, I didn’t really create the Delft Tile look because I got a little heavy-handed with my sponging, but I really like the way it turned out. I scored 1″ squares on a piece of Sahara Sand and the started sponging with scrap paper to cover the scored lines. Part way through, I realized I could just punch a 1″ square on scrap paper and move along more quickly. Genius! (well, maybe more efficient). I sponged Soft Sky over the Sahara Sand and then lightly sponged some Wisteria Wonder over that to add a little umph.
- Color Combination. The pairing of Soft Sky and Blackberry Bliss was inspired by July’s Paper Pumpkin kit (I just loved them together). I opted for Sahara Sand as the alternative to white. If you like this combination as much as I do, feel free to copy the picture below or save it off for future reference:
- Circle Layers. I’m so happy to have the 2″ Circle punch in the 2014-2015 Annual Catalog. It allows me more options for layering circles without having to walk over to the Big Shot. I LOVE my big shot, but my punches and I are really tight. The layering of this sentiment (from the sentiment out) is 1-3/4″ Circle punch, 2″ Circle punch, 2-1/2″ Circle punch. I mimicked the differences in these layers on the borders around the central panel of the card.

I love, love this gorgeous card, what a fantastic way to make tiles, this layout really looks like tiles on a beautiful wall, the sponging is truly phenomenal Brian and yes!! you are the King of borders!!! 🙂
First of all, I do love the colors … and I definitely am going to “save” them somewhere! And your Delft-like tiles are lovely … such a great job sponging to get such beautiful hues! As much as I love my Framelits, I LOVE my punches, too. When I recently rearranged and reorganized my craft space, I made sure that the punches were moved even closer. Again, a GREAT job on the challenge, Brian!

Gorgeous card Brian, I have a soft spot for Blackberry Bliss and it really plays well with the Soft Sky. Great tip about using the 1″ square. I can’t way to try this.
Oh Brian – I thought when I started reading this that the tiles were going to be super complicated to make. You have really brought it down to a super easy level. Thanks so much. The card is a standout and I could have sworn I could reach out and touch the smoothness of those tiles. Fantastic job! I am “like totally” impressed as the younger generation would say! LOL
Hi Brian, I love all the comments. I too like the colors and the tiles. But, I’m so sorry I can’t grasp the 1″ square tip. I do get using scrap to cover the score lines, but then I get lost. Maybe you should do a video on this technique? It does look great. Also the 2″ round punch is on my wish list too.

Gorgeous card Brian. Love those tiles. Thank you for the tip about how you created them and can’t wait to see the full blown video… don’t let it burn into your brain for too long! And I see I will have to add another tab to my “Brian’s Tips, Tricks and Reminders” binder to include your ‘color inspiration’. I have a feeling you will come up with more! LOL That binder is like a stamping bible for me.
