I am on the Design Team for the FabFriday Challenge, so I get a sneak peek at all the upcoming challenges – we have to plan ahead, right? When I first saw this week’s FabFriday Color Challenge – Gold and Whisper White – in our list of challenges, I was relatively unexcited and not counting down the days for the challenge to approach. That all changed, though, once I started playing around with some gold and white products. Here’s the card I created:
And here’s the color banner for this week’s FabFriday color challenge:
Tips, Tricks and Reminders
- Cut out the love. I really wanted to crop out the letters for the word “love” and have them pull their essence from the gold panel beneath them. I am not super-handy with a craft knife, so that was a thankless journey. The letters are the negative space in the design of this stamp (the part where no ink is applied to the stamp), so how would I recreate the shape of the letters in gold? I simply embossed the same image with White Stampin’ Emboss Powder on Gold Foil Sheets and then carefully snipped them out. I glued them on top of the embossed image, rather than having the gold pop from underneath. Not exactly what I wanted, but it works for me.
- Heat Embossing on Whisper White. Heat embossing can often leave you with warped cardstock – if you overheat (which tends to be my problem) or hold the heat gun too close. I’ve tried to reverse the effects of warping by heating the opposite side of the paper, but I have only seen minimal results – nothing life-saving. Since Whisper White cardstock is lighter than other cardstocks, I embossed the image from Seasonally Scattered on a Whisper White Note Card (much thicker) and then cropped it out. That extra thickness gave me just what I needed to smile when I was done.
- Fancy Foil Designer Vellum. Beneath the top panel of this card, I cropped a Gold Fancy Foil Designer Vellum pieces that sets the mood for the rest of the card. Not only do the bold stripes add structure to the random dots and hearts found in the image stamped in the center of the card, but the stripes really help to draw your eyes in to the center panel with the word “love”. When I glued the vellum to the Whisper White base of this card, I made sure I only glued the center that would be covered by the top panel. The edges are loose and free, which adds a little whimsy to this card design.
I’m really happy with the final product of this color challenge and am happy I embraced it. Despite several techniques and some super-detailed snipping, the finished product looks really simple.

Wow! At first glance this card looks aple to make but that’s not the case. I love the cut out letters!
Good idea, using a notecard for heat embossing! 🙂
Lovely, Brian!
A stunner indeed!!! so elegant and so beautiful. Love the cut out LOVE letters, perfectly snipped, as always.
Beautiful card! I too love the notecards – wish SU would package sheets of that yummy CS in 8 1/2 by 11! I am SO impressed that you snipped out those letters! Mine would be a mangled mess if I tried it:-(
BIG WOW, WOW, WOW!!!!!
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this card!!! So CAS but bold in appearance and statement!
I love sparkly cards and this card really sparkles. I am blown away by your scissor skills. Awesome job
What a way to start my day! Eye catcher indeed!
Beautiful card!! I love gold and sparkly 🙂 One trick I have used for embossing is to use a foil-covered chipboard from the DSPs. That way it heats from both sides, makes the embossing time quicker and you don’t have the warping.
This is perfect!
Great idea for the letters!
I must get on this Vellum Foil train! Goodness….Love the CAS style but the fussy cutting and embossing certainly make it a WOW! TFS!
“Whimsy”, one of my favorite words. Delightful!
Knock out card!
Simply Dazzling!
Pretty! I like the gold better than the red I have seen on other cards . I thought the red looked like a skin rash ! The embossing has got be stunning in the real . Great card Mr. Snipster!
