It’s always difficult to see friends in pain. A friend recently lost her mother. I don’t know what to say or how to behave, but I do know how to go straight to the basement to make a card. I used this week’s Freshly Made Sketches to make this card for my dear friend:
And here’s this week’s Freshly Made Sketches layout that inspired my card:
Tips, Tricks and Reminders
- Color Selection. Since the Designer Series Papers were released in the Holiday Catalog, I’ve been gaga for Pear Pizzazz. Can’t seem to get enough of it. Green and purple usually pair well, but I think Pear Pizzazz plays nicely with Perfect Plum, so I’ve played with it here. Both are peaceful shades, so I think they work nicely for this sympathy card. If you like this color combination, too, feel free to copy this combination:

- Textured Background. To create additional (but not overwhelming) texture on the Pear Pizzazz border on the left panel, I stamped the flower image (inked in Pear Pizzazz and stamped off once) over and over on the panel. I really like the look of the added texture from the image that’s repeated from the front focal point of the card.
- Candy Dots, Candy Dots. I added three candy dots in the top, right corner of the card to balance the weight of the card. Unfortunately, that left a wide open space in the bottom, left corner of the card. No good. I squinted, gave myself a nickel and added three candy dots to the bottom, left corner. The additional color balances this card perfectly, I think.
Stamp Sets: Love & Sympathy, Petite Pairs Papers: Perfect Plum, Pear Pizzazz, Very Vanilla Inks: Pear Pizzazz, Perfect Plum Accessories: 1-3/8″ Circle punch, 1-3/4″ Circle punch, Ovals Collection Framelits, Subtles Candy Dots (Pear Pizzazz), Regals Candy Dots (Perfect Plum), Project Life Corner Rounder, Stampin’ Dimensionals

Wow, I love the colours ! Sad for your friend ! Anita
I just love everything about this card . I am sure the recipient will also. It is a sad time when you lose a parent ,but knowing that there are others that are thinking of you helps during that difficult time . This card reflects your thoughtfulness .
Great card. A bit of advice. After losing my little boy I learned there was nothing anyone could say to take my pain away. But it’s important to have others say something rather than nothing. Of course you don’t know what to say. The words that helped me most: “I’m so sorry” & “I’m sorry you have to go through this”. A few months later send them a card. Let them know you’re still thinking of & care for them.
Pam. I have chills reading what you wrote. I am so sorry that you lost your little boy. I can’t imagine the pain of such a loss.
Sorry about your friend. It is so hard to lose your Mum. I am needing to make a sympathy card myself and would love to CASE your card please Brian? I do love the way you have made it to reflect the sombre occasion and very stylish as well – well done on a difficult card to make!
Sympathy cards are the hardest to make, but yours Brian truly conveys your feelings for your dear friend. The card is beautiful and peaceful, surely will be received with gratitude.
Thank you for sharing.
Brian I love your card in every way, including the extra candy dots. My heart goes out to your friend
Brian, what a beautiful card. I think it is comforting just to look at it. Nothing hurts like losing your mother.
What an absolutely fabulous sympathy card Brian. I really don’t like making them for fear I will have the occasion to use them but we must do what needs to be done. I think the fact that it is a handmade card reflects how much you care. It means that you put part of yourself into conveying your sadness at your friends loss. Don’t underestimate how powerful that can be.
Another beautiful card Brian. It’s not easy losing your mother or father, been there done that. BUT one of the things that does help a person get thru that loss, is the love and support from their friends. I kept my cards standing on the dinning table for weeks, and relooking at them throughout the day. So you did that right thing for your friend, making her a beautiful card. It WILL mean a LOT to her. trust me.
Oooo, Brian, your dear will love this card , it made me sad , I know how your friend fills,
Love and hugs to her, they say it gets better. But when does thet start ! 🙁
Your such a beautiful sweet friend.
When you see her give her the hugs you gave me when it happen to me , it help lots.
Thank you for that ,
Hugs and love

I’m so sorry for your friend’s loss, and know the card will bring her comfort. Very pretty card.
A beautiful bright card like this adds a smile through the pain! Boy, don’t I know.
Thanks for sharing Brian.
LOVE your card, Brian. As I live in a senior community it seems I am always needing sympathy cards so I will definitely be copying this one. FYI: the title of the stamp set is Love & Sympathy. You had me going for a minute! I file my card ideas by stamp set and I didn’t have one by your stamp name so I had to go look it up…..whew! I do have it!
Beautiful color combo Brian.
Brian, you can never go wrong to send such a beautiful card to a friend who is grieving. The recipient will be comforted to know you care and are thinking of them. Your card is so, so beautiful and full of caring thoughts. Always love your cards and videos!

So sorry for your friend’s loss! I am certain this card will give her some comfort! I love the card and color combo you used!! One of my favorites!!
just knowing that you are thinking of your friend will help them. it’s helped me get through the loss of both of my parents this year just to have my friends give me a hug, hear that they love me and are sorry that i’m dealing with this. some days it’s that little bit that means so much to me and gets me through the day.
you are an amazing person and friend Brian, and we all feel the love you put into every card you make.
