Today is All About You – a Stampin’ Up! Birthday Card

Birthday cards are some of the most fun to make – when you tuck a birthday card inside an envelope, there’s usually a fun occasion on the other side.  Yippee!  Birthday cards can be soft and pretty or bold and sharp.  They can be void of color or filled to the brim with shades of every color.  Today’s card is bold and colorful, a fun celebration for the recipient.  Here’s my card:

Celebrate Today, Hooray It's Your Day, Stampin' Up!, Brian King  Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Finding Inspiration.  Inspiration is everywhere – we just have to keep our eyes open for it.  I was perusing a local, high-end stationary store last week (I could look at paper all day) and came across this tissue paper.  Not only did the paper inform my color choices, but it totally inspired the images on the card.  I immediately pulled out my phone to snap a photo – and recreated the look when I returned home with my Celebrate Today photopolymer stamp.Balloon Paper Inspiration
  • Epoxy Add-ons.  The Itty Bitty Accents Epoxy Stickers weren’t part of my original design with this card, but the card needed a little something extra – a little pop of texture and color to make the big balloons more interesting.  I reached for my epoxy stickers and Blendabilities to create these fun, little bubbles that float about the sentiment.  The Blendabilities colored right over the epoxy sticker.  Yay!
  • Color Combination.  I already gave away my inspiration for the colors in this card (if you weren’t paying attention, it was the beautiful paper I’d seen in the store).  I played around with these colors, though to create my own balance of bright and soft.  Stamping off each balloon helped to keep them transparent enough to be interesting.  I offset the bright red, yellow, green and orange (Real Red, Daffodil Delight, Old Olive and Pumpkin Pie) with a soft shade of blue (Marina Mist) to help tame the brights a bit.  I really like how well Marina Mist pairs with Real Red, so I used it for the base of this card.

Stamp Sets:  Celebrate Today, Hooray It’s Your Day  Papers:  Marina Mist, Real Red, Whisper White  Inks:  Real Red, Marina Mist, Old Olive, Daffodil Delight, Pumpkin Pie, Stampin’ Blendabilities (Cherry Cobbler, Daffodil Delight)  Accessories:  Itty Bitty Accents Epoxy Stickers, 2″ Circle punch, Stampin’ Dimensionals

  1. Very colorful.

  2. This is my favorite card I’ve seen using the balloon set. I actually took it off my order because it wasn’t doing anything for me, even having seen numerous samples and examples using it. Your card I love!

    Thanks for sharing!

  3. Brian this is such a fun card! Great inspiration. How cool would that be to put that tissue in a gift bag and compliment it with this homemade card? The epoxy stickers are the perfect touch!

  12. Great card! Stamping off gives this card a lightness but still plenty of color. Thanks for the tip using Blendabilities with the epoxy stickers.

  13. I really like this card! I wondered how you got the colors so soft without losing their brightness and didn’t even think about stamping off. Sheesh! My brain is numb from getting ready for my beginner stamp class this weekend. This is why you are so essential, Brian. You’re there when we are looking for inspiration and guidance and just plain purty!

  14. Yes the Epoxy stickers added that little extra, very cool.

  16. Hello Brian: May 2, 2013 – Question re: your King and Queen card…saw it on Pinterest and wondered how you cut out the crowns? Is there a punch for that retired set?
I’m looking to make place cards w/crowns, and surely hate to cut out each one individually….sorry to bother you, but thought it wouldn’t hurt to ask you how you did them….Thank You…Marge

    • Thank you for your comment. I’m so happy you like that card – I remember it well. I hand-snipped those crowns, and it wasn’t an easy task. I’m sorry to deliver such unfortunate news – I wish I had a better tale to tell.

  17. Brian, love your card today (as always). The stamping off of the balloons and the pop of those epoxy stickers, colored with Blendys is striking! A fun card for sure! 🙂

  18. Great card! Never thought of using the set that way!
