Crisp Vintage Leaves for PPA268

This week’s Pals Paper Arts sketch challenge gave me the opportunity to combine several items that have been sitting on my “need to do this” and “need to use this” lists for quite some time.  This week’s square sketch (although the final project doesn’t have to be square) gave me the perfect foundation and inspiration I needed to make this 5″ x 5″ card:

Vintage Leaves, Happy Happenings, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, PPA268

And here’s the banner for the challenge that inspired my card:

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Mysterious Patterned Paper.  Do you recognize the patterned paper behind my Fall leaves?  I felt very challenged by this print of paper found in Merry Moments Designer Series Paper – the 12″ x 12″ page of Mossy Meadow with bold white plaid has always been beautiful to me, but I haven’t been able to figure out how to use it since the print is at a diagonal.  Once I started cutting it into a square, I knew I was in love.  Looks like a completely different paper – and fits perfectly on my 5″ x 5″ card base.Vintage Leaves, Happy Happenings, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, PPA268
  • White Embossing Powder.  You know I love my White Stampin’ Emboss Powers, right?  No white ink will give as crisp and bold an image as heat embossing with white embossing powder.  I have wanted to emboss these leaves for a while and was ecstatic with how gorgeous this oak leaf pops against a Soft Suede and Mossy Meadow backdrop.  I used a large panel of Whisper White beneath the gorgeous leaves to give the leaves even more crispness for a bigger pop.
  • Color Inspiration.  Don’t you just love rich, deep colors paired with Whisper White?  These colors just scream “Fall!” to me (or maybe it’s more of a whisper), and the white just makes them pop with the crispness I love about Fall.  If you like this combination as much as I do, feel free to save this:Stampin' Up! 12. This beauty “leaves” me speechless! I love it. Wonderful colors on the leaves that go with the plaid. I can almost feel the crisp leaves underfoot. Hey, give me a break I just took a walk with the dog and we have lots of oak trees around here! Well done and perfect for the sketch in my opinion as I was thinking a spray of leaves.

  13. Really love what you done with the plaid! Your leaves are just perfect with the white embossing – this card shows your talent!!

  14. Stunning card with the white embossing powder! Great tip on turning a diagonal print into a traditional vertical. Thanks.

  15. I can’t be-leave it! πŸ™‚ You’ve done it again! I love the plaid – reminds me of my teenage years in the 60’s when plaid was IN. I love that it’s coming back. And your use of the white embossing powder on those leaves is a great idea! It does pop, and I would never have though to do that. Another winner, Mr. King! πŸ™‚

  16. Ok Brian, with your rule of 3. Here are the three things I like most about your card.
    1. Making the plaid square, perfect!
    2. White embossing the leaves, layered beautiful on the whisper white, love the cleaness of all the white space
    3. Color combo of the plaid with the soft suede. Excellent!

  17. Beautiful and masculine tone on tone Brian.

  18. LOVE this color combo…admittedly have never made a square card, but as you indicated, the leaves from this (my favorite!) set is perfect for the size!!!!

  19. OH NO! I’m now going to have to move Vintage Leaves and Thinlits from my “Nice To Have” list to my “Don’t Hesitate GET NOW” list….and, I was leaning toward embossing powder (& heat gun)…but now, I’m about to fall over! Love this card!

BTW, Have you ever thought to Challenge your team to use as many of the Weekly Deals on one card as they can? Be fun to see…

  20. Fabulous masculine card. I will be CASE’ing this. It will be perfect to send to my sons with a quick $20 as starving (well maybe more like thirsty) college students.

  21. This is stunning. At first I thought it was black and white the color combo is so cool.

  22. Very nice combo here, Brian. I love the plaid and the matching leaves. The white embossing really make them pop. Did anyone really expect any less? Thanks for sharing with Pals Paper Arts. πŸ™‚

  23. I freaking love this card. No joke.
