Trick or Treat for GDP158

October is upon us, so it feels appropriate to share a super-fun Halloween card. 🙂 This week’s Global Design Project sketch challenge gives us a trio of shapes that inspired me to make a quick-and easy Halloween card. I’m happy to share it with you today. Here’s my card:

Toil & Trouble Designer Series Paper, Seasonal Chums, Stampin' Up!, Halloween card

Here’s the banner for the versatile and fun challenge that inspired my card – the Global Design Project challenge goes live at 7am EST:GDP158Want to see how versatile this sketch is? Check out the projects from the GDP designers here.

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • One Hat, Two Hats, Three Hats. There’s very little stamping on this card – in fact, I only stamped the sentiment. Everything else is cut or cropped from cardstock or Toil & Trouble Designer Series Paper, this year’s papers designed for Halloween. How fun are these hats?! They are cropped straight out of the Toil & Trouble Designer Series Paper. Here’s a look at the colors and patterns in this pack of papers (you can click on the photo below for a closer view of each of the pages in the pack):Toil & Trouble Designer Series Paper, Stampin' Up! 147531The fifth pattern on the first row above is filled to the brim (pun intended) with hats that can be cropped with the Cauldron Framelits Dies. The dies also coordinate with the cauldron, cat and frog on the first page and the witch on the third page. Here’s a look at the Cauldron Bubble Bundle:  Cauldron Bubble, Stampin' Up! 149931I love when we have dies that coordinate with papers – so smart and a great way to get the most out of our products! The page of bats, incidentally, pair with the Spooky Bats Punch found on page 51 of Stampin’ Up!’s 2018 Holiday Catalog.
  • Sentiment Builder. While the trio of hats might be the star of this show (unless you count the star-filled panel in the background), the sweet “Trick or Treat” sentiment gets a pretty high billing. I stamped this sentiment from the Seasonal Chums stamp set on Thick Whisper White and cropped it with the Classic Label punch. I also punched a scrap of Crushed Curry with the same punch, cut it in half and layered it on either side of the sentiment. Such a fun way to spruce up the simple sentiment.Toil & Trouble Designer Series Paper, Seasonal Chums, Stampin' Up!, Halloween card
  • Halloween Colors. There’s no doubt that Basic Black is the foundation of this card (it’s a must-have for the spooky holiday), but three other colors are important to lighten the mood a bit. These colors could be as fun on a birthday card as a Halloween card – I love the versatility of this combination. Halloween is one of the most fun and fabulous occasions of the year, not only you can dress up but you can eat candy, all in moderation, of course, LOL!!
This card is just adorable Brian, colorful and fun too. The colors, the layout and fabulous paper combine perfectly with those awesome Witch’s Hats.
Beautiful card, my friend, thank you for sharing.
    XO

    • Thanks so much, Maria! I know how much you like Halloween and am so happy you like this card. I struggled with “is it too simple” and spent hours trying to rework it before deciding this would be my card. As I photographed it and wrote up my post, I became happier and happier with it. Thanks!

  2. A hat dance of witchy delights!

  3. What a great card, what a great card, what a great card! Oh, I thought I should say it three times, since that was one of the themes. Cute!

  4. Fun card..love things in threes!

  5. I like how you balanced the stars on the hat with the starry background paper!

  6. My biggest decision about today’s card is which 2 hats to choose for my daily use or which to save for special days. LOL I do need to make those choices because I like to coordinate my hats with which broom I’m riding! Yes, I do have my “witchy” days but don’t we all? Love this card Brian and the fact that you could punch the images directly out of the DSP is fabulous. Some mighty sharp designing minds at SU, that’s for sure. Thanks for sharing your “magical” talents with us each day.

    • Ha! Thanks so much for your comments, Grace! I got quite a chuckle out of your “which hats to wear” comments – so funny! I love this DSP and love any paper that coordinates with punches or dies. Glad you like it, too!

  7. Oh this is oh so cute for Halloween……perfect colors! And genius move to use the witch hats!

    • Thanks so much, my friend! I wasn’t sure the hats were the right choice (they are much bigger than I thought so had to make my card in landscape), but I’m happy with hit now. Glad you like it.
